Oh No

- I really wanted to focus on preserving the shape language and some of sonic's original silhouette with this! While I was originally going to give him freeform locs to create a similar feeling to the spines in the original design, I realised that by putting chunky braids up in a ponytail I could get a much more similar silhouette while adding a bit more opportunity for secondary motion.

- Part way through making the design, I realised it could be good to implement the rings in some way - I gave him an earring and added them to the hair as hair cuffs. I think the yellow really helps contrast the blue in the hair, alongside providing visual clarity and volume to the shapes. Also hair cuffs and beads are just fun to add to characters and I am but a creature of habit

- Back in silhouette land, it's the puffer jacket! This helped recreate the shape of Sonic's smaller spines on his back. In my original sketch, this jacket had full, rather puffy, sleeves. While I liked the sense of presence and form it gave to the character, it felt too weighted and like it deviated too much from the original silhouette. By making it sleeveless, it kept the intent of the spines while preserving the comparatively narrow arms from the original design, keeping that sense of speed. I also added some beige to the inside of the collar to reference sonic's ears, and gave him a beige vest so that the jacket and jeans could recreate the shape of the beige chest of the original.

- I gave him jeans so that I could keep the socks of the original, instead having them as the cuffs of the jeans. This decision I am a little unsure of however, and wonder if it would've been better to give him tracksuit bottoms or something more convenient for running to better match the character.
