Episode 5: Jewish mothers. In particular, ours! On today's episode, our special guest is Dikla's mom, Roberta, who called in to the show from Long Beach, California. The Shickers talk about their mothers, relating to their moms and parents both Jewishly and generationally. No fakaktail today, as Dikla had a bad night drinking (read: we recorded the day after Cinco de Mayo) and Tori is still super preggers. But, we did enjoy delicious limeade and strawberry slushies.

On this weeks episode, we welcome Aaron and Sarah Shay of The Mongrel Jews to the show to talk about their Seattle-based street folk band. The brother-sister duo talk about their band's origin story, the now defunct Ravenna kibbutz, and their family Passover traditions over some chametz (ie. bagels and lox). Our token shiksa Brigid concocts a delicious Pesach fakaktail (recipe forthcoming!) and we all get shickered at 9 a.m. on a Sunday morning.

Vashti's Nipple

Ingredients:

2 shots Amaretto

2 shots red wine

1 shot grenadine

1 shot lemon juice

Sprite to taste

Optional:

Add a peeled grape for garnish and sugar rim

Brigid created this Purim fakaktail as a twist on the classic Amaretto Sour.

Note: According to halacha, the Jewish celebration of Purim requires those past the age of b'nai mitzvah to drink wine, and drink until one cannot tell the difference between the villain Haman and the hero, Mordecai. Our fakaktail included the addition of red wine to incorporate this tradition. 

Hamentashen

Makes about three dozen

4 eggs

1 cup oil

1 1/4 cup sugar

2 teaspoons vanilla

3 teaspoons baking powder

5 1/2 to 6 cups flour

1-2 small jars baked good filling (apricot, prune, cherry, poppyseed, etc.)

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

Mix together eggs, oil, sugar, and vanilla.

Add baking powder and flour.

Knead until smooth.

Roll out very thin (1/8 inch if you can) on a floured board.

Cut out circles with a drinking glass.

Put a dollop of filling in the center of each circle (I used Trader Joe's fig butter and cherry preserves).

Fold in three sides over the filling to make a triangle with filling showing in the center.

The ladies talk about the upcoming Jewish holiday of Purim, the female characters that we love to love and love to hate and hate to hate. What's the deal with Vashti, the outcasted head-strong, demonized harlot? Hear about this and much more as these three ladies, along with our vivacious mixologist, Brigid, rant over boozy wine fakaktails and hamentashen (look for the recipes in the next post!)

Barbie's Berry Fakaktail

Ingredients:

2 oz extra strong ginger beer

2 oz Trader Joe's French Berry Lemonade

1.5 oz of Stoli Vanilla

Splash of grenadine

Dribble of lemon juice

Lemon for garnish

Instructions:

Mix together ingredients in a shaker with ice. Shake well. Pour contents into your glassware of choice (we recommend a martini glass).

Episode 1, February 18, 2104. Meet the Shickers in Seattle: Dikla Tuchman (right) and Tori Gottlieb (left). These two lovely Jewish women met here in Seattle and decided what was missing from the podcast waves was a show about young adult Jewish female issues. Even more specifically, some of the big issues that Jewish women in their 20's and 30's face here in the Pacific Northwest.

To start things off with a bang, the shickers get shickered on Barbie's Berry fakaktail and chatted about Jewish gender identity. Why shabbas candlesticks for girls and Kiddush cups for boys? Why must the burden of modesty always be on the female? Maybe we want to wear low cut titty shirts and swig Manischewitz on the bima? 

Our regular special guest, the Jew-ishest goy you'll ever come to know, our fakaktail mixologist, Brigid Lohman (the busty redhead in the middle) joins us mixing her in-theme beverage (find the recipe below).
