going into a bougie supermarket makes me feel like that one painting of the bolshevik standing in the russian palace
"$12.95 for 8.5oz of Jelly are You Fucking Kidding Me"
The best part of bad highly collaborative art like movies is that you get people of wildly varying competency so you get to see talent individuals making interesting creative choices get dragged down as the ship piloted and crewed by buffoons steers directly into an iceberg
The best part of bad highly individualized art like novels is that you get a direct look into the very special brains of some of the oddest and most overconfident people on the planet.
The best part of bad commercial art like video games is that you get to witness a production dumpster fire that by any measure of decency should never have seen the light of day but thanks to sunk cost the biggest chumps in the world still gotta try and sell you on it.

forget Hal and Liam “Inviting Angst” O’Brien for a moment—if something happens to Shadia, if she’s hurt or killed, it is going to WRECK Thaisha. She’s the irresponsible one, at least towards her family. She’s the one who runs off again and again into danger, while her children and husband stay safe at home. They were supposed to be safe at home. How will she possibly cope if she loses forever the chance to be a better mother, not because she was off having dangerous adventures but because she wasn’t there to protect them?
Y'all need to unpack your nigh-puritanical views around motherhood. Having and pursuing a duty that calls you away from your family when a stable parent and extended support system remains at home is in no way irresponsible. And motherhood should not come with the reflexive expectation of the death of any identity beyond one's children.
And where did "How will she possibly cope if she loses forever the chance to be a better mother" even come from? There's a lot of both guilt and blame being projected onto Thaisha (my guess is overeager extrapolation from her blackout drunk statement to Tyr while actively mourning her more-or-less brother-in-law) that goes deeply uninterrogated within this fandom. I'm not here to police your takes, but I will occasionally chime in when I see harmful stereotypes bubble up around my PC.
So just to say it loudly one more time:
Thaisha's children are fully grown adults in their 20s, so let's chill with the endless SaHM guilt
Occtis is not and never has been Thaisha's "second chance at being a good mom" like TF?!
And you know the discourse would be non-existent if Hal and Thaisha's roles were swapped. Hal isn't "safe at home" either. He's taking on a bunch of very dangerous people in the city. In fact, I'd say that the Schemers' whole deal is that home is very much not a safe place to be right now. Also, irresponsible? She's trying to save the world not going fucking cave diving.

I think some of y'all don't know what people in their 30s look like.
In the real world people in their 30's mostly don't look meaningfully older than people in their 20's. Once you stop looking like a teenager you sort of just look like an adult for several decades.
A good barometer if you keep noticing that a certain length of time in your memory keeps being the hub of "when everything changed" or "Back before everything nebulously got weird" it's always worth checking if that year or time period coincides with a big change in your own life.
Did the world get a lot kinder and more reliable in 2014 or is that when you got a rich girlfriend and were spending more time in affluent areas? Was there a flourishing of queer culture in 2001 or is that just when you left home? Were winters harder before 2019 or was that just the last winter you spent working outdoors? Were pop stars more important in 1993 or were you just twelve?
honestly you all are so annoying because motherhood IS interesting but fandom people are simultaneously obsessed with deciding that every woman has motherly qualities and completely disinterested in actually exploring motherhood as a role that informs a character. I do think exploring a character being a mother can be wildly interesting if they are canonically one, but because of misogyny, people just view motherhood as a totally unremarkable naturalized state that all women must inhabit!
And if a character is a mother in canon and is a bad one, or even just realistically flawed at it, fandom will drag her through the dirt and beat her with hammers. A bad mother is pretty much the worst thing a fictional woman can be.
Aabria is god's strongest soldier for making Thaisha a mother.
We want Flawed Female Characters! No, not THOSE flaws. 😕 Those aren't sexy, COOL flaws. You know, the ones that I don't think actually SHOULD be considered flaws, that I might even feel personally judged for. The "unjustly martyred by the court of public opinion" kind of flaws. So like a "flawed" woman who's actually kind of a Saint in a way. I didn't want, like, FLAW flaws. What she did was WRONG and that makes her a BAD PERSON, and how can you justify that? If you still like her after what she did, that makes YOU a Bad Person too. Ugh, disgusting. 😕 But anyway, WHY isn't anyone writing flawed female characters?
“is this character good or bad” “is this ship unproblematic or not” “is this arc deserving of redemption or not” girl…

RIP Julien you would’ve loved vaping, dating apps, doing bumps, and Instagram reels.
Man posting nothing but thirst traps and passive aggressive instagram stories about honor.
I must have very good taste in CR mutuals cause I am seeing some excellent discourse on how Bolaire could either be a weapon who has outlived his use and is doing the best he can with his condition or he's a malicious serial killer who lied to Hal about his motives and who Thjazi hated not because he was an object but because he was a bad person, because at the end of the day the most important thing is that either variant can have psychologically and physiologically freaky sex with Hal.
Thinking about it Bolaire only exists because of Thaisha's family. If the sword that killed the first god was never made, the masks of the fatal play would have never been crafted.
Thaisha wants to fix the world and the damage done. In part because she's fallen in love with the world through the love of her life's work, and in part because of the damage her people and her family very specifically did to the world in freeing themselves from tyranny.
Bolaire grew from this same desire. The same spark. No more war, self determination. He wants to livez be a person in this world because of the beauty Hal and his family have shown him.
To live in this world he needs to cause damage.
I want them to have a conversation so bad.
"Thaisha wants to fix the world and the damage done. In part because she's fallen in love with the world through the love of her life's work, and in part because of the damage her people and her family very specifically did to the world in freeing themselves from tyranny."
Do not entertain for even a second that the oppressed would or should feel an iota of guilt for the manner by which their liberation was attained.
including Aabria's tags
this rhetoric about art ESPECIALLY books being “traumatic” is inherently right wing and censorious. to insist that a work of fiction can corrupt is deeply puritan moralist thinking and it’s STUPID. some things SHOULD make you uncomfortable.
The thing about the nat 20 nat 1 is that we have absolutely no idea if it's all bullshit. It's basically the best version of events from Bolaire's point of view. We don't know if he's lying about Thjazi, we don't know if there's anything sinister about his interest in Hal.
I think even if some of it was lies there was truth to it. Thjazi knew who he was, and from Hal it's confirmed Thjazi could be a bit of a bastard.
But I just love that we got so much in that scene but we the audience can't trust it completely which means we get to see how much is truth and how much is lies as the game continues.
But for Hal, Hal believed all of it. It's so good. Part of him for whatever reason wants to believe Bolaire's narrative so much and Bolaire wants him to believe him so desperately.

I am thrilled by Liam, Marisha, and Taliesin at the same table, but I think I may be even more thrilled that the Schemers table is just the arts & culture scene of a mid-sized city. These people should be on a nonprofit board together. She Should Be At The Fundraising Gala.
Imagine being Shadia Fang rn. Your uncle was just executed. The guy your mom failed to set you up with died, but don't worry, he got better. There's also an ancient godkilling relic that needs your dad carnally and you have until Wednesday to perfect your new juggling routine
