Unfollow me if you don’t believe that trans masc people deserve just as much support and solidarity as trans fem people. I’ve been seeing a very concerning uptick in a sort of “trans fem separatism” and it really, really rubs me the wrong way. This is the WRONG time to be dividing the trans community so that we’re easier to conquer and oppress. It really saddens me and pisses me off to see trans women I think are otherwise pretty cool start saying stuff like “transandrophobia isn’t real”, or to see how the Shinigami Eyes plugin has become completely useless, or stuff like that.

I genuinely believe that some people need to touch grass and get outside their little insular communities, and realise that understanding the struggles of others (not just our own) is key to making real concrete progress.

So, like. Critical Role started out with a cast of eight or so white video game and anime voice actors. This means that there is a part of the fanbase who are here *because* the cast is white, and can be sort of like... gamergate chud adjacent about things. More babbling under the cut.

People who are like 'Marisha Ray is just the dungeon master's girlfriend and sucks for being here', and especially 'any attempt to include more diversity in the cast is Changing Things Too Much, why can't we just go back to How Things Were', *especially* regarding Aabria Iyengar. And there's probably more than a few people who know it's a bad look to say oh, I can't watch stuff with a diverse cast, and instead wrap it in excuses that you can't really pick at because listen, we all know that there isn't enough time in the world to watch every actualplay under the sun and people are busy and dropout has a paywall and on and on.

But the reason I know that sometimes this isn't just a 'man i don't have time for this' is because: EXU Calamity is right there. It is also part of Critical Role. It is only four episodes. It is free on youtube. So why did so many people in this fanbase only think Brennan was just good at jokes and nothing else before cr4 started?

Oh. Because they never saw it. Why is that? Well. I have a theory. Because, see, Dimension 20's core cast includes Lou Wilson, Zac Oyama, and Ally Beardsley, and the kinds of people who won't watch stuff because there's a not straight white person over there got booted at the door. (This doesn't mean d20 fandom is perfect or flawless, just that there is a certain amount of 'cool with people of color and/or openly trans/nonbinary people' you gotta be to watch in the first place.)

But in critical role fandom, this didn't happen. So sometimes outright bigoted bullshit goes on, especially on youtube or reddit or twitter, because some people got way too comfortable about those eight white video game voice actors being the only ones they saw.

What does this mean? I think it means that sometimes, you gotta cut the players some slack. Remember that dnd is ultimately a game you play with your friends, and that if the cr cast were not friends, then that person would not longer be invited. That mistakes happen and you gotta just let them go. That character drama is fun and no one is the devil for indulging in it.
