just a quick doodle for a headcanon I had regarding my favorite boy’s birthday:

the night of Marik’s birthday, none of them sleep. They celebrate during the day by going somewhere new, and then pull an all-nighter. Most of the night they’re inside with ALL the lights on watching movies, and then go outside to chit-chat and watch the sun rise.

In The Man from Egypt, Shadi’s final test is one that would force Atem to send his friend to his death in order to win. Shadi claims that Atem’s reliance on/trust in his friends is his greatest weakness, and that “true strength…is needing no one.”

Atem proves him wrong.

The ultimate message of the Man from Egypt arc is that friendship is never a weakness–it’s your greatest strength. And that message sets the tone for the entire rest of the series. Every single time a character suggests that Yugi/Atem’s friends are just holding them back, that relying on others is a bad thing, that eventually they’ll need to let go of their friends if they want to move forward, that character is resoundingly proven wrong.

At least, right up until the Ceremonial Duel…

At which point suddenly the help Yugi has gotten from Atem is a weakness that’s holding him back, Yugi’s ability to prove that he can “surpass” Atem and “stand alone” is more important than their friendship, and the choice the narrative frames as the correct one is for Yugi to win by sending his friend to his death.
