Growing up is realizing that Nausicaa and Asbel finding other love interests by the end of the manga makes sense for the story progression and their character paths and for Nausicaa becoming, like,,, A Divine Savior in universe,,

Your absolutely justified rant on Pinoko is portrayed in the OVAs reminded me that Pinoko also treated being kidnapped in Night Time Tale in The Snow like she's on vacation. Manga!Pinoko would've definitely tried to find ways to escape in both that OVA and the film - maybe even trying to play up that priestess' desire for a family to let her guard down. Heck, it could've gone down the route of making Pinoko's escape to come out of a horror movie with the fact that she's just one person vs a woman with spiritual powers, an army and a hired assassin in a huge, dark temple.
It's a shame that the OVA ended with the whole "it was all just a dream" explanation, as the concept of Black Jack and Pinoko finding themselves in the past is interesting, and they nailed Pinoko's haunted expression near the (before she cries and throws herself on the ground like she's having tantrum and not because she was taken hostage and witnessed people getting violently killed). The fact that it's implied to have been Black Jack's dream says something about how he views Pinoko oof.
Oh my gosh. 10000000% agree with ALL of this. Like so many moments where they could’ve stayed true to Pinoko’s character or at least done something interesting, and they just… fumble it. Exactly why Pinoko’s scene in the snow makes me so mad.
And like when BJ is looking for Pinoko and bursts into the room to see her kidnapped by a crazy lady and he’s yelling “GIVE PINOKO BACK!!” And Pinoko is just… helpless??? Her beloved doctor is trying to get to her and she doesn’t at least bite anyone?! Okay okay, maybe that’s a little tonally dissonant here, but you’re right: the fact that she doesn’t try escaping is so out of character.
Also that escape idea sounds SO GOOD and I’m so mad it didn’t happen ajcjjsjs!!!
And yeah. The “just a dream” bit was such a let down.

Tumblr is super big on the "I didn't say it was good, I said I liked it" but really need to discover the value in its opposite of "I didn't say it was bad, I said I hated it".
You can acknowledge that something is good, great, a masterpiece even, and just straight-up not enjoy it.
I honestly can never forgive the Dezaki OVAs for how bad they messed up the English anime community’s perspective of Pinoko.
Like, the high-energy precociousness? The silly outfits? The ginormous stuffed animal collection and carrying them around on her back while dancing around the house?
And to be fair none of those things are bad on their own or as a character interpretation: I wouldn’t care if English audiences had better access to the plethora of Black Jack materials and adaptations that they have in Japan, but for most English only anime fans, the OVAs are all they ever see.
And despite Pinoko having moments in the OVAs where she shows her maturity and depth, it’s not enough to outweigh all the childish and silly aspects of how they chose to write and animate her.
So of course English only people refuse to acknowledge that she’s an adult, because most of what they know of her supports that.
But she’s almost a completely different person in the manga.
Manga Pinoko has some stuffies, but not a room full. She has to wear child-sized clothes, but she cares about fashion and wants to dress like a stylish woman. Manga Pinoko is sometimes precocious, but mostly she just speaks her mind. And she’s not high-energy: she’s high emotion. She feels things strongly and expresses her feelings loudly.
And so many English only fans hate her or think she’s annoying because the Dezaki OVAs are either all of or mainly what they know about her. And that depiction of her, compared to the manga, kinda sucks.
Another thing that bugs me about how the OVAs characterize her is that they make her too nice. And that’s a weird thing to complain about, but it’s true.
The Dezaki movie was my first ever introduction to Pinoko, but when I went back to it after reading the manga, I was so mad about how they wrote her. You’re telling me she was kidnapped and used as leverage to force Black Jack to do something, and she was treating it like vacation?? Manga Pinoko was kidnapped for similar reasons and bit her captives, started a fire, and even accepted her own death for the greater good.
And she was kidnapped by an attractive older woman trying to get close to Black Jack? Forcing him to help her??? And she liked her and treated her as a friend??!?!?? This is something I still can’t get over. My jealous, hot-tempered, rash manga Pinoko would never. She got jealous over a grandma sitting next to BJ in a movie theater. The whole thing with Jo Carol kinda makes me seethe.
And then there’s the OVA with her sister, where she like??!! Talks to her totally normal at the end?? With no grudge or resentment or even sadness??? Not to mention how much they softened (butchered) her sister’s character. Just took all the complicated and messy parts of their relationship right out to make Yurie more likable so she could be the female lead (while Pinoko is RIGHT THERE, but also hardly in the episode). It’s infuriating.
That’s not to say the OVAs never did anything right: I like Pinoko in White Justice, Thoughts of Green, and San Merida, I like how they have her drinking wine with BJ, I like her melancholy introspections moments (BRIEF moments) where she laments about her unrequited love (though this still seems more subdued than I think manga Pinoko would be), and overall I love how fond of her BJ is. Like, the way he smiles and looks at her shows he deeply cares about her and likes having her around even if the fans don’t.
Then there’s also how they butchered Black Jack’s character in the OVAs but let’s not open up that wound.
Anyways, the TL;DR of it is that how the OVAs depicted Pinoko wouldn’t bother me so much if it wasn’t how the majority of English Only fans viewed her. But it is. And it sucks.
She’s my absolute favorite character in the series (well above Black Jack, though I love him too), and probably my favorite fictional character in general, and it just steams my beans that she is so willfully and detrimentally misunderstood by so many people.
Always praying for an anime remake that stays true to the characters, with all their messy faults and baggage. Justice for Pinoko.
