Lord of the Rings was published in the fifties, and largely written in the forties. Tolkienās opinions on society and morality and technology are at some points genuinely more conservative than what Iām comfortable with. And yet, the more I think about it, the more sure I am that Tolkien actually deconstructs most of the clichĆ©d fantasy tropes he supposedly originates. Some examples.
The long-lost heir is not the hero, heās a side character who deliberately uses himself as a decoy.
The real hero actually fails in his quest, his goodness and determination and willpower utterly fail in the face of evil, and the world is saved by a series seemingly unrelated good deeds.
The central conflict is not between destroying the world and preserving it. An age of the world will come to an end, and many great and beautiful things will perish, whether the heroes win or lose. The past may have been glorious, but preserving it is impossible, and returning to it is impossible, time has passed and the world has moved on. The king returns, but the elves are gone and magic fades from the very substance of Middle Earth. The goal is not to preserve the status quo, the goal is the chance to rebuild something on the ruins.
Killing the main villain seems to instantly solve the problem, eradicate all enemies and fix the world, except it doesnāt, not wholly, since the scouring of the Shire still has to happen.
Also, the hero gets no real reward, and what he gets, he cannot really enjoy. He is hurt by his ordeal, and never fully recovers.
There is a team of heroes, a classic adventuring party, except the Fellowship is together for less one sixth of the series. The Fellowship is intact from the Council of Elrond to Gandalfās death, four chapters. The remaining eight are together until Boromirās death, an additional six chapters. This is nothing compared to LOTRās length of sixty-one chapters, if I count correctly.
Tolkien is not classic high fantasy. If you actually think about it, there is very little magic. The hobbitsā stealth is not magical, most elven wonders are not unambigously magical, wizards are extremely rare, and even Gandalf hardly uses magic if you compare him to the average DnD wizard. Most magic is indistinguishable from craft, there is no clear difference between a magic armor and a very good armor, between magic bread and very good bread, between magical healing and competent first-aid plus a few kind words.
TLDR: Stop praising recent fantasy for deconstructing Tolkien if theyāre ādeconstructingā something Tolkien has never actually constructed.
every single negative stereotype about women was dreamt up by men who were projecting. fight me about it.
āwomen canāt driveā
It is so well known that women are better and safer drivers than men that OUR CAR INSURANCE RATES ARE LOWER. Women get into fewer accidents, get fewer DUIs, and receive fewer speeding tickets than men.
āwomen never shut upā
Several scientific studies have shown that not only do men talk more than women, they also think that women have been talking for much longer than they actually have. Men interrupt and talk over women, dominate conversations, and still think women talk too much.
āwomen are shallowā
Lol next
āmy wife is my ball and chain lmaoā
Multiple studies have shown that marriage between men and women: Increases male lifespan, decreases female lifespan Decreases male depression rates, increases female depression rates Decreases male stress levels, increases female stress levels Increases male health and happiness, decreases female health and happiness Increases a manās chance of getting a raise or promotion, decreases a womanās chances of getting a raise or promotion
āwomen are too emotionalā
Men love to say this about women after hurting them, in order to shift the blame and dismiss their feelings in one go. In reality, women are taught to hold our tongues and control ourselves quite literally from birth. Weāre taught to put menās needs and wants ahead of our own emotions regardless of the personal cost. Men are taught to do more or less whatever the fuck they want to women. Men take their emotions out on women while women are expected to shove theirs down.
I could go on and on but I donāt really think I need to.
Donāt know if I agree or not, but itās definitely an interesting point.
the nice thing about statistics is that you donāt actually have to agree with them in order for them to be true

Bill Nye has what feels like a valid anti-hero/supervillain origin story. Young, optimistic scientist dedicates his life to educating children about science, but then watch as those same kids grow up to ignore science and continue to destroy the earth. So in a fit of rage/act of desperation he activates Super ScientistTM mode and becomes his superpowered persona and starts killing billionaires in ridiculous over-the-top fourth grade science fair experiment related ways.

this is the happiest day of my life
Too soon
65 million yearsā¦
Donāt worry, guys. Carl is clearly a brachiosaurus, which lived during the Jurassic period. (And before anyone says our lilā boy Steve is a velociraptor and therefore puts our comic in the late cretaceous, aka the time of the cometāthat lil guy could easily be a compsognathus or a caudipteryx, both Jurassic-era species of small theropod dinosaurs. So the light getting bigger every night is going to pass by harmlessly, and Steve and Carl can go on enjoying the stars together until they die of old age, since Carl has very few natural predators at his size and I bet heāll protect Steve, if he needs it (though small, fast and carnivorous as Steve is, he probably wonāt).Ā
So itās all good!!Ā
That entire response explaining how these two characters didnāt die a fiery death but instead lived long and happy lives literally made my day.
Yeah, Iād say Steve is definitely a compsognathid.Ā
I just found out commercial characters have their own little fandoms and itās the funniest thing in the world when people make them interact.
I love how The Worldās Most Interesting Man (link)Ā and Old Spice Guy (link)Ā are all like āHell no, I donāt have a feminine sideā while Mayhem Guy (link)Ā is out here like āHell yes Iām a woman! And I just found out that youāve been cheating on me for two years so now Iām destroying everything you love and Iāll take everything else in the divorce!ā
I did a thing???? I don't check twitter a lot so um if you have any requests hmu in the comments section

Hey all! This poem is part of my chapbook Miss Translated, which I produced in a limited run as Town Hall Seattleās Spring 2017 artist-in-residence. The main conceit behind this work is that to accurately portray my relationship with Spanish, I have to explore the pain and ambiguity of not speaking the language of my grandparents and ancestors. As a result, these poems are bilingual ⦠sort of. Each one is translated into English incorrectly.
The poems I produced have secrets, horrific twists, emotional rants, and confessions hiding in the Spanish. Itās my hope that people can appreciate them regardless of their level of Spanish proficiency.
oh shit.Ā my spanish is pretty shaky, but iām pretty sure āte perdonoā isĀ āi forgive you.āĀ wow understanding just that much is pretty chilling.
and something aboutā¦blood? and transformation?Ā oooh yikes.Ā she didnāt want legs in the spanish version did she.Ā and it was a painful process.
so this poem is aboutā¦misunderstandings leading to pain for the person misunderstood?Ā whish is really effective with the way itās written, wow.Ā this is the most meta poem form iāve ever seen.Ā wow.
#reblog#photoset#poetry#i later ran it thru google translate to confirm my theories#wonāt post said translation or say how right i was#cuz i feel like thatās missing the point
<ā This right here is AMAZING. Look at the journey this person went on reading my poem! Secret fact, I have been stalking tags and reblogs of this because what I wanted more than anything was to provide an experience for people and LOOK AT YOU ALL GO. Your engagement and enthusiasm is amazing and so humbling for me.
Holy crap, this is incredible. As a natively bilingual Latina woman, allow me to dive into a full analysis.
First, I should tell you my experience of reading this. I didnāt even look at the English at first, because I didnāt know that the mistranslation was the point, and of course I didnāt need it. So I read the whole poem in Spanish and thought it was really sad and moving. Then I looked at the English and my eyebrows went right up to my hairline. Why the hell would you translate it this way, I thought.Ā
Then I read the caption and realized that this is a genius way of demonstrating how translation into English can be an act of colonization and violence.
I would translate the first two lines asĀ āThe mermaid rose from the sea / To see the dry world.ā Theyāre very neutral lines. She was curious about the dry world, so she went to check it out. Thatās a very different connotation from the mistranslation, which tells you that the mermaid preferredĀ the land to the sea.
The second two lines I would say meanĀ āShe found a fisherman on the beach / this beautiful fish without a net.ā Sheās the one with agency here, not the fisherman, and she thinks of herself as a free fish, unconstrained by a net, not as a fish without a home.
The next three lines by my lights readĀ āShe had a gleaming tail; scales / that covered her breasts, arms, and face / and a wake of lacy waves.ā Again, itās from her perspective, not the fishermanās, and she thinks of herself as having a gleamingĀ rather than oilyĀ tail, a lacyĀ wake rather than a frothingĀ one.
Next stanza:Ā āThe fisherman caught her by the tail / and cut it in half.ā From her point of view, the fisherman has committed a sudden and senseless mutilation. Then he goes,Ā āāNow,ā he said to her,Ā āyou have legs. / Why donāt you walk?āā Itās almost like an accusation. You have legs now, why donāt you just get up and walk?
My read on the next stanza is:Ā āThe mermaid began to sing to the sea / for aid, her blood transforming / the sand of the beach into rainbows.ā The sea is her home, not the land, and sheās crying out to her home in pain as she bleeds.
Then the poem ends withĀ āShe sang to the fisherman,Ā āI forgive you, I forgive you, I forgive you.āā
The reason this mistranslation is so brilliant is that it takes a story about a mermaid trying to forgive a man whoās committed senseless violence against her, and turns it into a story about a man who uplifts a woman to a better life out of the kindness of his heart. And the thing is, thatās exactly what happens to so many stories from colonized cultures when theyāre adapted by the oppressor. Translation into English, and further the cultural language of the oppressor, can be an act of violence and erasure rather than one of respect.
This is why I have worked so hard to translate poetry from Spanish to English that has previously only been translated by white Americans who learned Spanish in college. I can bring something to the translation that they canāt. Itās usually not this extreme, but this exists to some degree in all translations by people who donāt truly understand the culture that produced the work theyāre translating.
