characterization details for david and jack (previously: simon, ava)
ava's second-in-command, willing to challenge her but not stand his ground when she dismisses, contradicts or gives him an order
has known (about) ava since before the quiet rapture and implies she used to be quite a different person. he clearly respects her, but there's an undercurrent of, idk. bitterness? when he says 'she cares about her crew. some more than others but, you know...' the vibe is definitely 'it's me, i'm others'
(a while ago i joked about david third-wheeling an ava/jack situationship and look, not everything has to be romantic or sexual, i know, but i still think conceptually it's funny as fuck)
comes off as the kind of guy who tells himself a lot of stories in his head: he's immune to propaganda, he's a reasonable authority figure, he's humane and stands up for what he thinks his right. but all of these are either immediately proven false, or he proves that he can't/won't follow through
i do think david is ultimately a decent person. when confronting ava about the sub's oxygen reserves his concern for simon seems genuine, as does his attempt to connect with him later. it's kind of sad because it feels like the first time someone treats simon with empathy and since it's pretty early in the movie you start hoping things would get better from there BUT
very emotionally volatile. goes from sarcastic to amiable to encouraging to furious in like a minute
speaking of, we learn that more than one convict has died in the blood ocean and that the coi has other prisoners they're willing to use, and david's cool with it. he actually hopes it happens because simon's a murderer who deserves to die down there. which makes it several levels of insane considering that, oh yea, i forgot, david admits he wired the x-ray camera wrong and that's why it went off when simon activated it
inconsequential, often overlooked detail :)
good enough at his job that ava would rather drag him off his deathbed than get another welder, assuming there's another one available (which there must be on an operation involving at least two submarines, and if this really is the personnel list of ava's ship)
also probably pretty tough, considering he does get a physical/technical job done quickly while barely able to stand
idk man, they didn't give us much to work with
i mourn the days when simon/jack was shaping up to be the fandom's inexplicable juggernaut ship
