alsoooo a big, big, big digital security lesson that you absolutely have to understand while making recommendations is that if your protocol is too complicated or inaccessible, even if it's somehow perfectly invulnerable, then people will start taking shortcuts that are way fucking worse.
ok, proton handed payment info over to swiss authorities, who then helped the fbi. if you start indiscriminately fearmongering about all proton services because of it (and implying that they can send more info than they have) then what are people switching to? people have to use email. not everyone is going to switch to tuta mail or whatever. but even if they did, they have paid plans too, which would likely be susceptible to the same issue. and if they decide, fuck it, there's no point, i'll just go back to using gmail instead, that puts everyone at way more risk than continuing to use protonmail.
it's also fine and good to say that people shouldn't be putting incriminating stuff in any emails. but we don't know that the fbi tracked them down through incriminating emails. they knew somehow that the account was associated with the stop cop city protestors, which could've very well been because their handle was stopcopcity at proton dot me or something. (i don't know if that was the case!) and then the payment information associated with that account was used to track someone down.
like the whole idea is that we have to break these cases down piece by piece and then come up with easily actionable recommendations that protect most people like 80-90% of the way, because that alone will make it much much harder for others to compromise them. and then there are various additional levels of precautions you can take based on the sensitivity & admin level of what you're working on. like. that's what digital security for orgs is.
and this is kind of a tangent but. you especially need to be prioritizing a risk mitigation approach because flock & ring cameras exist lmao. regardless of whether you use any consumer technologies at all, if you live in the US, these things are tagging your license plate & other visual attributes of your car. using facial recognition on drivers & passengers & pedestrians. aggregating all that data to track your movement like on a map. what are you going to do? not live in a city? not drive a car? not leave your house?
no. you have to be aware of what these security risks are and how to manage them depending on what actions you're taking.
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
DIRECTIONS:
Place a chicken breast on a cutting board. With your hand flat on top of it, carefully slice the chicken in half horizontally. Trim excess fat as needed.
In a large shallow baking dish, combine chicken, pickle juice and ½ cup milk; marinate for at least 30 minutes. Drain well.

in addition to embedding images in fic, brilliant people have shared codes to imitate a number of social media sites/other online phenomena. some examples from my recent fic:
i (clearly) think this is super fun, and i really enjoy doing it. while it can be frustrating and finicky to figure out, it is much easier than you might have thought, mostly because (as mentioned) people are so kind and brilliant and share code to do this! in this post, i'm going to link some of the code that i've used/consulted and show some examples ~under the hood~ of how the above things look in practice. hopefully it'll help you feel like you, too, can try!!
code/tutorial links for ones i personally have used as base code, most of which have very clear explanations of how to use them that make the rest of this post truly unnecessary:
texting (incl blue messages, green messages, group chat)
google search
gmail (sent email)
instagram
phone lockscreen notifications
generic email/draft email (with scrollbar!)
there are collections on ao3 full of these codes, incl discord, twitter, other social media sites!
that is more than enough to get started, but i love to over-explain things, so just to be super clear, there are 3 steps in how i do this:
Writing, planning images, uploading images if needed (aka the parts with no coding)
Adding the CSS to the work skin
Adding the HTML to the actual text/story/chapter - usually the most annoying part :-)
in more (unnecessary) detail:
writing/planning images/uploading images
i always write out what i want to have without code because i like making sure the actual content/story is front and center! i also want to make sure that i know when the exchange happens for any timestamps. for the above examples, it looks like this in my gdoc:
i also make sure that i have any images that i'm going to include at this point, because it can be super annoying to be almost done coding and realize you want/need to go back to figure a pfp or something out. ao3 does not host images, so you need to either have a link you trust won't die or upload images yourself somewhere else that you can link. i've been uploading to my drafts on tumblr, but that does decrease the quality a little. (personally i'm fine with that but just want to give that disclaimer) i would recommend downloading any photos you know you want to include as soon as you find them so you don't lose track and spend a bunch of time trying to track something down (definitely speaking from personal experience rip)
the only image note i'd add is that i always recommend previewing how the fic looks before posting (duh) and checking specifically if the dimensions look weird. on the gmail code for example it'll make pfps 40px x 40px even if it wasn't originally a square, which can make it look weird and stretched out, so i cropped all the pictures i used as gmail pfps to be square (not 40px x 40px, just square in general).
work skin css
all of the above guides will explain this, but you'll add some base code to a work skin that you apply to your fic. i use the same skin for all my fic as i go, but if you adopt that approach, make sure you don't ever accidentally have attributes with the same names! just to show what this looks like/where to find it on ao3:
combining html/story
all of the above guides will include the html you use in your actual story, and i HIGHLY encourage you to integrate it in your non-ao3 editor and transfer it over from there instead of workshopping it just in ao3 and risking losing it if something goes awry!! (again speaking from experience rip) pay close attention to which parts you're supposed to change from the source code and which you won't change (eg gmail icons). examples cont:
this step is usually the most annoying and finicky and requires the most patience to troubleshoot things. css/html can be very particular and there are some things that would require additions to the base css that you might expect to just work (eg links - adding links to things makes them sooo angry). i usually transfer the html parts into the chapter and troubleshoot before adding the main text because it can be annoying to scroll through all the text for editing it. there will be something that is slightly off from how you wanted it to look, and you will have to call it a day at some point! i often end up posting something when i feel like it's good enough and then going back and fixing it later. consider this permission to do the same :)
that is how i like to do this but i'm sure other people have other ways they prefer! i can imagine doing the coding as you write might be nice for some people but i like to go back and do that when i'm feeling a little stuck or want to work on fic but need a brain break.
i hope this helps people who are interested but not sure where to start!! i am happy to help if you're running into issues but i should note that css is a complete mystery to me and i self-taught myself html to make pages for my neopets so my skillset is...limited...

seen this survivalist/prepper type infographic about the FIVE ABSOLUTE ESSENTIALS IN THE END OF THE WORLD and of course it has water listed, seems obvious. but then the little blurb about why mentions 'for flushing'... you're not going to make it.
since i rarely see mention of solutions for human waste in my occassional peeks into shtf spaces, i figure most of you (who assume generally are even less familiar with such spaces) probably aren't aware, so here is a relatively simple, easy to prep option: the bucket toilet (preferably the twin bucket toilet)
so yeah... save your water for more important things than flushing, such as washing your hands after you use the loo!
If you're ever in a situation where you need to know this then you'll be in a similar situation, hygiene-wise at least, to mine whenever I was deployed as an infantryman. Here's the manual I used as leader of the field sanitation team in my unit's advance party. It's got a lot of toilet options and it tells you how to place it safely separate from your cooking facilities, if you happen to be maintaining a camp for an extended period of time for some reason.
The 'twin bucket toilet' means two buckets and separate peeing from pooping. That will really help with preventing smells, as poop stinks much more when it's wet. Throw some straw, dry leaves or sand on every poop and let it dry.
Here is some more in depth information about composting toilets from people who use them regularly with tips and troubleshooting. (The bucket toilet is a form of composting toilet, for people new to the concept)
Some of their tips aren't great for low supply situations, but they ARE making it work long term as a regular thing. I feel like some of those could be adapted in a disaster situation, like if you're already using innoculants you can pull some culture from a previous batch.
They also talk about building long term toileting facilities and modifying a port a potty into a 5 gallon bucket system.
