Jonathan Joss was an Indigenous, gay man who was murdered on the first day of Pride month as well as Indigenous History Month. He died protecting his trans husband. Homophobia and racism arenât marks of the past, and this is a heart breaking reminder of that.
Praying for a safe journey back to the spirit world, Uncle â¤ď¸âđŠšđŚ
Today is the anniversary of the death of Jonathan Joss (King of the Hill, Parks and Rec). Jonathan Joss was an Indigenous, gay man who died protecting his transgender husband, on the first day of Pride month. Today we remember him and how he protected his family.
It's one of many reasons that workers tell Polygon they are eager to unionize.
Employees and developers working on Magic: The Gathering Arena say they were hired with promises of remote flexibility, so they bought homes and built lives around those assurances. But they say they are now being told they may need to relocate to Washington state â or effectively lose their jobs.
Those concerns are a major reason why a supermajority of workers on the Arena team are attempting to unionize with the Communications Workers of America, under the banner United Wizards of the Coast. The group publicly launched its campaign on April 27, calling on Wizards of the Coast and parent company Hasbro to voluntarily recognize the union by May 1.
These employees are doing important and laudable work in response to being forced into a bad situation but Iâm glad they still took the opportunity to call themselves âUnited Wizardsâ
WotC has still refused to recognize the union and has escalated to sending organizers letters directly to their homes about how unionizing is a bad idea. Luckily, our United Wizards are educated, organized, and agitated and the form letter from Hasbro was as laughable as it was threatening.
If you want to help out the United Wizards you can sign this petition

Solidarity baby!
Ok I want to say something controversial
But you are responsible for your own safe spaces. You can block tags, block words, block people.
âBut i thought fandom was supposed to be a safe spaceâ âyeah you have to curate it.
Unfortunately one personsâs safe space may be another personsâ trigger. Thatâs ok. Simply block them, block the tag, block the word etc. They can do the same for you.
Maybe Iâm just out of touch, but Iâve been around since the days of âdonât like, donât readâ and thatâs a good philosophy. If it squicks you, scroll past. If it causes you anxiety or upset, block! Plenty of people are responsive if you ask them to tag an upsetting trigger. And if theyâre dicks about it, block em.
Since different people have different needs, one personâs safe space will be anotherâs Trauma Central.
I donât know who said it first, but âI need to be able to express my anger without shameâ and âI need to be away from yelling and loud noisesâ are both valid needs people can have for a safe space that really arenât compatible with each other.
So are âI need to process my traumaâ and âI need to not meet any trauma.â
Or âI want a safe space to tell/read the stories that speak to meâ and âthose stories are distressing to me.â
Insisting that your needs are the only needs anyone should have is not a safe space, itâs its own act of violence.
You donât get to make others homeless to make the universe your personal safe space.
Read this bit again:
âInsisting that your needs are the only needs anyone should have is ⌠its own act of violence.â

feel free to cite the deep magic to me witch i was there when it was written but my memory is like REEEEALLY shitty
At the risk of sounding anti-intellectual, I think that college should be free and also not a requirement for employment outside of highly specialized career fields
At the risk of sounding like an effete intellectual, I do actually think you should be allowed to just take college courses indefinitely
technically you can, if you don't care about degrees.
Free Harvard courses. Free Courses from Stanford. Free Courses from MIT. Free courses from Yale. Free courses from Princeton.
Free courses on Coursera.
Free Courses on EDx Free Courses on Alison
For paid, there's The Great Courses+/Wonderium. 20$ a month for unlimited courses.
When searching, the phrases you're looking for are Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), or you can do a general search of say, "free online college courses." Oh, and so you don't get surprised like I did, have an avoid: Hillsdale College is a conservative Christian site and not a valid MOOC place. Sign up with them and you will get things like THIS IS WHY THE LEFT IS TURNING YOUR KIDS TRANS AND GAY in your inbox.
@yourunderwaterskies I wanted to say thank you so much for adding these links, seriously, they've been life-changingly helpful to me-

This post started with fucking hairless sharks. Weird wasnât a destination so much as a jumping off point.
Iâve never been so surprised not to encounter the word âsmoothâ in a text post

Not shaving and not wearing make up are literally nonbehaviors. Theyâre a complete lack of action. But doing nothing is considered masculine because women are not allowed to just be. this goes double for trans women.
reblog this version because transmisogynists donât know how to fuck off.

In a move that left hundreds of longtime residents scrambling to find alternative housing, municipal construction crews reportedly demolished a local Black neighborhood Thursday, part of an ongoing city project to make room for nothing in particular. âFor decades, this part of Fort Worth has languished as nothing more than a loving community for African American families and a bustling hub for Black-owned businesses,â said Mayor Mattie Parker, adding that the destruction of dozens of beloved restaurants, theaters, barbershops, and newspapers was an essential step toward creating more vacant lots that could sit empty behind fences for an indefinite length of time.
Full Story
Most people who say they want a "village" really want socialism/a social welfare state, but they're Americans so they can't just say that.
The #1 defining characteristic of a village is that everyone's always up in each other's personal business and your ability to get your needs met depends on your interpersonal relationships and your reputation. Your ability to conform to the rules and expectations the village has set for you.
That means that if the village says you shouldn't get pregnant when you don't have a man to provide for you and you get pregnant regardless, they can refuse to support you. They can reject and stigmatize your child.
When you make a decisionâany decisionâfrom what you wear and who you associate with to who you will be romantically involved with and what that will look like, to your education and career, family planning and whether you will leave your partner if they abuse youâthe village has a say in all of it.
A proper social state, however, decides which services to provide, how much to fund them etc, there are still cultural biases there, but it won't tell you how to live your life. If all university programs are free, you can go study liberal arts instead of law, your parents can't stop you, and if the state provides a stipend, free housing and free meals while you study and also takes care of your basic needs afterwards, you have the ultimate freedom to do whatever the fuck you want to do with your life.
Want to have 8 children and a trad lifestyle in the countryside? Cool, they'll have healthcare, schooling, meals, competent teachers, after-school activities, public transit, public parks and activitiesâall for free. And none of that will be dependent on how many people around you like you and your kids personally and what they think of your lifestyle.
You want to be aggressively transgender and live in the city with your 8 person polycule and spend your days doing art and running a cafĂŠ that only does matcha? You can do that too. You'll get free housing for all of you and the business space provided for you, even if everyone in your neighborhood thinks you're weird.
The bureaucrats handing out the collective resources ideally shouldn't give a shit what you do with them.
When I applied for uni and chose a liberal arts degree instead of STEM, nobody told me "yeah no sorry we don't approve of that, you'll have to do something we think is useful or pay for it yourself". I got a free education plus a stipend, subsidized housing and food and everything else.
Unless you want a community of people who get to have a say in everything you do, you don't want a village. Socialism or perhaps communism might cause less despair maybe?
yeah yeah rainbow capitalism is bad and whatever but like. when I was a child, being pro gay was not the popular or lucrative choice. I'm happy that times have changed.
I miss rainbow capitalism. I do. I miss when it felt like public opinion was still pro gay. I understand it was always an empty gesture, but it mattered in a sense of knowing how socially acceptable being queer is. If that makes sense.

Do you not like Twenty Ăne Piløts?
the fact that you took the time to put the slashes in the Os tells me that this is probably not a conversation we should have
easy to miss that one of the reasons maternal mortality is diminished so extremely by modern medicine is that modern medicine makes it so much more possible to identify the pregnancies that will die and take you with them, or are otherwise unacceptably high risk. and then discontinue those ones safely, before it's too late.
thought about this because it's so frustrating when people argue that 'dying in childbirth' is a historical sort of event that doesn't happen nowadays (false) and therefore is irrelevant to the legal status of abortion, since it's not a real danger.
except it super is, and i think a lot of people haven't noticed that this argument in addition to simply being incorrect is basically the same as when people say we don't need vaccines for deadly diseases because no one gets those now anyway.
like yeah one reason for that is we vaccinate everybody ffs.
Note: after the end of Roe v Wade in the US, the maternal mortality rate (and the infant mortality rate) are showing clear increases in the states with the strictest anti-abortion laws.
Forcing people to carry high risk or non viable pregnancies to term kills.
