frankly, even a lot of the stuff that comes across as "well you should write what i want to read" is also rooted in what's publishable. someone may not care about historical fiction as a genre, but they don't tend to say it's unwriteable or unreadable - but x reader stories? a "mary sue"? a self insert? oh well that's "just bad writing" (and yes, there is misogyny going on here as well, no denying it)

a big difference btwn these two things is that historical fiction can be published... but x reader fiction can't. self inserts can't. mary sues can't. or rather, they are perceived as being unable to be published, and there is some truth to that, especially if they are "obvious"

perfectly well-meaning people who are trying to share advice will suggest things that entirely uphold what is viewed as publishable within the states. and playing outside those rules is only seen as viable as a subversion

i think writers and writing deserve one hell of a reckoning. the written word is not only viable when it follows modern form and the related rules. it is not subversive when it exists outside of that form and those rules

write something where it's nonsensical but the first letter of each line creates a story, or congratulates the reader who seeing it - this is writing. this is not a fundamental subversion to writing, because writing is not bound by strict rules that can be subverted, and that is the point i'm trying to get across when i talk about this stuff

"know the rules to break them" - no. rather, unless your specific goal is to publish, understand that there are no rules

writing is whatever you want it to be. it's posing a question. it's telling a story. it's making a suggestion. it's wasting someone's time. it's making a puzzle. it's having fun. it's being silly. it's being absurd. it's being precise. it's a single sentence. it's a million words. it's one word repeated until it loses all meaning and that's the point. it's misspellings and inaccurate grammar on purpose or by accident. it's dramatically shifting gears halfway through and jumping into a different story. it's talking directly to the reader, reaching past the fourth wall
