No worries, most the time my poses get pretty repetitive, and sometimes I just sorta wing it, but here’s just a quick little tip that I use for a good bit of my poses! 

Most the time, I like to think of poses being either inward or outward; that is, the main direction that the person is resting towards. Most the time, I go from the chest out, which acts as a sort of grounded core. Then, the feet act as support and the head points to the main focus of the picture. 

Inward poses are typically more subtle, or focus on more relaxed, or subtle emotion, which a lot of the weight being shifted around to support the relaxed core. Whereas, outward poses are more direct and dominant, and focus on more powerful or obvious emotions. The focus is more on the torso, rather than the support. 

I like to think of inward poses as being more safe and secure, considering there’s a lot of support towards the relaxed weight. It also takes less energy to go inward, so it has more of a casual vibe. Outward poses tend to have a more lively stance, and act to display stronger emotions, as a sort of amplifier.

I re-read and edited that sentence for an hour, but you’ll probably just glance over it for half a second.

Dear Person I am Writing To:

This is an optional sentence introducing who I am and work for, included if the addressee has never corresponded with me before. The second optional sentence reminds the person where we met, if relevant. This sentence states the purpose of the email.

This optional paragraph describes in more detail what’s needed. This sentence discusses relevant information like how soon an answer is needed, what kind of an answer is needed, and any information that the other person might find useful. If there’s a lot of information, it’s a good idea to separate this paragraph into two or three paragraphs to avoid having a Wall of Text.

If a description paragraph was used, close with a restatement of the initial request, in case the addressee ignored the opening paragraph.

This sentence is just a platitude (usually thanking them for their time) because people think I’m standoffish, unreasonably demanding, or cold if it’s not included.

Ooooh, you guys wanna talk arts and crafts?  Let’s talk arts and crafts!

So here’s all the stuff you’ll need…

Paper and drawing supplies, cardstock, thick cardboard, craft glue, scissors, a box cutter, black acrylic paint, a paintbrush, mod podge, craft magnets, and plastic rhinestones.  Some of this stuff is probably already lying around your house, and all of it is available pretty cheaply at your typical craft store.

First, draw something fun!  It doesn’t have to be a GOOD drawing, because as everyone knows, the quality of any given piece of artwork rises in proportion to its proximity to a refrigerator.  (I GUESS you could print off some clipart or something too, if you want to skip the fun part.)

Cut out the thing!

Apply a thin, even coat of craft glue to the back of your drawing, and glue it to your cardboard.  The thicker the cardboard, the sturdier your magnets are going to be.

Cut away the cardboard around your drawing with a box cutter.  This can be pretty fiddly, so start with a fresh blade, and take your time.

Cut thin strips of cardstock, about the width of your cardboard, and glue them around the edges of your magnets to hide the corrugation.

Then paint the edges black.  This should be dry in just a few minutes.

Once your paint is dry, give your magnets a coat of mod podge.  This will give them a glossy finish, and help seal them against humidity and water damage.

Set them aside to dry for about 20 minutes.

When your mod podge is dry, flip your cardboard over and start attaching the actual craft magnets.  The ones I bought came with an adhesive on the back, but it wasn’t very good, so I’m using some more craft glue.

One of the most important things you need to worry about when you create an animation is the keyframes. Keyframe animators, are usually considered senior animators (in a professional studio) that decide on critical aspects of the animation. Each studio has different roles that keyframe animators have to fill, but generally speaking they are in charge of translating the storyboards into a fluid animation. Depending on the size of the studio, you may also find “regular” animators and in-betweeners. Since I come from a position of someone who does everything from the beginning to the end, you’ll be getting a more holistic view. Going into the animation hierarchy is really beyond the scope of this mini-lesson. I’ll be focusing on how you would want to handle yourself when you are creating keyframes for your animation, specifically keyframing characters.

 First you would ideally have a character sheet (to make your life easier, to make it more accurate to the vision of the designers or directors or… to yourself)

 I didn’t make one, but you’ll have to forgive me.

 I like martial arts, so I wanted to try animating a “jump spinning hook kick”.

The first thing you need to do is to make the “keys,” or keyframes. For those who don’t know what keyframes are, they are just points in the animation that define major movements and/or change in movements of objects (in our case characters).

So here we have the character:

We definitely want the point of contact to be a key.

And the landing.

Now that we have the major keys down, we can start breaking them up into smoother and more refined movements. We have to ask ourselves how does the human body move when performing this kick and to answer that question you would have to get references!

Keep adding keyframes at important positions in the movement, this you really need to develop a feel for.

I added another element to the animation to have the character seemingly be reacting to something (just to make it more interesting).

Expand on what the element is by laying out important keys (as you did before)

Now as a key animator you are in charge of laying out the length of exposures each frame has. If you’re working in a professional setting, you will probably get an X-sheet (or exposure sheet). This is a good time to start thinking which frames need to be extended and which need to be shortened.

I wanted to exaggerate the kick so I extended the exposure of the kick.

Now that you have a blueprint of where you want to go, you can start filling in the spaces where extra frames are needed.

Really once you have your point A and point B set, it’s fairly simple to fill in the blanks. The important part is getting point A and point B just right. Having a smooth animation is not as important as having good movement (imo). Part of the charm that Japanese animation has is the interesting choice of shots/angles/poses that make up for the lack of frames that you would normally see in a Disney animation.

Keyframes can also be used for changing the backgrounds, and perspective lines more broadly. Although seeing hand-drawn backgrounds has become rarer and rarer these days because of how much easier it is to generate it with 3d software.

Move the skills section up to the top!  You know what I give a fuck about the most when I’m reading a resume (at least for entry-level positions)?  WHAT YOU CAN DO.  I frankly don’t give a shit where you learned it.  Tell me what you’re capable of in concrete terms, organized in a bullet-points list or table that I can quickly scan to see if you even stand a chance of matching what we need, because that is all I’m doing in those critical first couple of seconds that decides whether I even bother looking at the rest of the resume.  (Which I get sounds kinda callous but when I have to get through a couple dozen resumes, meaning download, open, read, decide what to do, forward it to the appropriate person if it makes the cut with my comments/summary/recommendations, file it appropriately and go on to the next one, and get back to my other duties and responsibilities - which I don’t have enough hours in the day for as it is - I can’t afford to depth-read every single resume that hits my inbox.)

Include volunteer experience as work experience if you have any.  Running the concession stand at a high school club event of some kind counts as cash handling and customer service experience.  Making blog themes for your friends counts as web design experience.  Just because you weren’t getting paid doesn’t mean it wasn’t work experience you can potentially leverage to get actual paying work.

Rework that top statement - in its current form it’s looking like some odd hybrid of an executive summary (good!) and an objective statement (bad!), and I’m not sure how I feel about it tbh.  I think it’s the “leveraging…to positively contribute” bit that is pushing all my “ugh no fucking shit sherlock” buttons.  Like…what were you going to say, that you want to skate along doing the bare minimum amount of work and you don’t give a shit about the organization’s goals?  I see way too many regurgitated statements like that - “positively contribute” and “maximize success” and “utilize my skills to further goals” etc. - and they just make my eyes roll out of my head at this point because they’re so generically corporate.  I’d rather see a declarative statement about what you are and what you can do, than what you want.

ALRIGHT EVERYONE I FIGURED OUT HOW TO DO FUCKIN INVOICES SO HERE YOU GO HERE’S THE TUTORIAL

invoices are an easier / safer way to request money from commissioners. all the commissioner has to do is accept to pay the money, so you don’t have to worry about them clicking or typing anything that will get you in trouble with paypal.

STEP 1

under Invoice Information you can choose what date your invoice needs to be paid by. if you don’t have a specified date for your commissioner then make sure to select No Due Date so they don’t get into any trouble for not paying by the default date.

STEP 2

go through your Business Information to make sure it’s only showing what you want it to show. your default template may show your address, phone number, name, etc, but everything is optional and can be turned off. personally i only keep my e-mail visible so commissioners know where the invoice is coming from.

your commissioner’s e-mail goes here

STEP 4

fill out what your commissioner is paying for and how much it costs. double check the Total towards the bottom to make sure you’ve filled out everything correctly. keep item names vague like “commission” or “image” since paypal may freeze your account if they catch any buzzwords they don’t like.

STEP 5

here you can fill out any terms and conditions your commissioner should know about, ie when you accept payment, if you give refunds, etc.

STEP 6

in the Memo box you can write a note for yourself to see when you look at the invoice. you can write down who commissioned you and anything else you’ll need to remind yourself of later

remember that you can replace the default template so you can save your business info, terms and conditions, etc for the next time you fill out an invoice.

How to Organise your Commissions

Apply to a  job, wait (1) day, then call.  Give them your first and last name. Tell them you submitted an application and that you’re very motivated to find [Enter field name] work. Let the conversation lead you wherever it takes. Be very polite. Say” thank you for your time, I’ll be looking forward to hearing back from you.” Rinse, repeat. This is to force them to be looking out for your application. 

 When you get to the interview, shake their hand firmly,  tell them your first and last name.  

Describe your experiences  as “ two years transcription and data entry” if you have a desk job interview and “ [however many years]  costumer service, retail and stock” for your retail jobs.  

Don’t use job “ buzz words” I stg they hear them all day. Say  things like, “ I’m detail oriented and am very good at taking instruction.”  “ I would like to work for a company with integrity and I feel that [ company name] would be a good fit”

When they ask you if you have “reliable transportation” say  YES. don’t tell them what kind of transportation, just say yes. (if you don’t do this, you wont get the job , I’m telling you right now). 

Research the company. Know what they do, why they do it, how OLD the company is. WHERE it was founded, and what kind of position you’re intending to apply for.

When they ask you “ give us a situation where you had to blah blah blah” Make one the fuck up. Make yourself sound good as hell, and like you put your company’s needs slightly above the customer’s needs, but make the customer happy. 

If they ask you about being outgoing, Say you “like to focus on your work so you can concentrate on doing things right” (which buys you out of having to act friendly all the time)

Questions for after the interview:

1.  Does this position offer upward mobility?

2. Do you enjoy working for the company? (if you’re not interviewing for a temp agency who will send you anywhere)

 Then, shake their hand,  Ask them to repeat their name (REMEMBER THIS) say thank you for your time, wish them a nice day and leave. write their name down outside if you have to, just remember the fuck out of it. 

AFTER your interview, send a card directed to the name of the person who interviewed you (I’ll give you them) that says “Thank you for the interview, I appreciate the opportunity. have a great day” This shows  that you have an understanding of professionalism, and will have them thinking of you kindly (or at least remembering you) when they’re shuffling through the choices. 

DO NOT tell them you just moved to the city over the phone.  In person, tell them you just moved to the city. Make it sound like the only reason you need a job is because you moved. Not because you’re desperate.
