One of my hobbies is writing songs for fake musicals. Hereâs the demo track for âSoul Friend, Soul Brother / Big Juicy Coconutsâ from On This Island of Mutual Killing, a fanmade Super Danganronpa 2 musical that doesnât actually exist but dang if I havenât written a lot of songs for it! (Look, hereâs another one!)
Lyrics under the cut!
Kazuichi: Â Weâre on an island where the summer never ends
And the sun shines down on all those
Big juicy coconuts!
The waves are lapping at the beaches where our friends are laughing!
Eight girls! Â Six guys!
(And one of themâs Nagito, soâŚ)
You do the math!
I turn around and the sands arenât as golden as her hair.
And the waves arenât as blue as her eyes.
And the sun is a deep dark night.
âCause she smiles so bright!
And the worldâs alright.
I know what youâre thinking!
People are dying!
Well, Iâm dying to get to know her.
I was a coward.
I was afraid to die.
I donât remember why.
âCause now my heart is going:
Bump-bump! Â Ba-bump-bump!
Like the soundtrack of a teen movie!
Bump-bump! Â Ba-bump-bump!
When I look in her eyes, I go
Bump-bump! Â Ba-bump-bump!
Like the fuel pump of a Ford engine!
Bump-bump! Â Ba-bump-bump!
And I realize⌠hey!
Soul friend, soul brother,
Iâll be her lover!
Youâll be my wingman!
Make me look fly!
Weâll stick together.
Itâs swimsuit weather!
No point in crying,
Live like youâre dying!
Hajime: Â Wait, Iâm confused. Â What exactly is the plan here? Â What are you wanting me to do?
Kazuichi: Â Okay. Â Listen up.
I heard at breakfast she was talking with her friends
About a girlsâ day out among the
Girls: Â Big juicy coconuts!
Kazuichi: Â The sea is free, so you and me should just pretend to be like,
Hey girls! Â Surprise!
Kazuichi and girls: Â What a coincidence!
Kazuichi: Â Weâll swim and the wind, it will blow through her hair.
Tan on the sand and sheâll close her eyes.
And weâll sit by a bonfire tonight
And sheâll smile so bright!
And her hand will be so close to mineâŚ
I know what youâre thinking!
People are dying!
Still Iâm trying to get to know her.
Out of my league? Â (Pft!)
Look at her options, man.
Sheâll go for what she can!
Hajime: Â This is an awful plan.
Kazuichi: Â Hajime! Â You know, Chiakiâs gonna be there. Â In a swimsuit.
Hajime: Â Weâre on an island where the summer never ends!
And the sun shines down on all those
All: Â Big juicy coconuts!
Hajime: Â The waves are lapping at the beaches where our friends are laughing.
Eight girls! Â Six guys!
I did the math, and now IâmâŚ
Kazuichi: Â Bump-bump! Â Ba-bump-bump!
Hajime: Â Like the soundtrack of a teen movie...
Kazuichi: Â Bump-bump! Â Ba-bump-bump!
Hajime:  When I look in her eyesâŚ
All: Â Bump-bump! Â Ba-bump-bump!
Hajime and Kazuichi: Â Like the fuel pump of a Ford engine!
All: Â Bump-bump! Â Ba-bump-bump!
Kazuichi: Â So letâs go be guys!
Câmon!
Hajime:  âŚokay.
Hajime and Kazuichi: Â Soul friend, soul brother,
Iâll be her lover!
Youâll be my wingman!
Make me look fly!
Weâll stick together.
Itâs swimsuit weather!
No point in crying,
All: Live like youâre dying!
Hajime and Kazuichi:Â Weâll spare no sorrow
If thereâs no tomorrow!
Burn down the future,
Light up tonight!
Soul friend, theyâre waiting!
Letâs get to dating!
No point in crying
All: Just âcause youâre dying!
Kazuichi:  Dying, Iâm dying for thoseâŚ
Hajime:  Dying, Iâm dying for thoseâŚ
Hajime and Kazuichi:  Dying, Iâm dying for thoseâŚ

Video transcript: I'm taking a walk in the woods right now and I just found the most beautiful little crinoid. Look at that! Look at the little star in there! That's gorgeous. Always keep your eyes on the ground. Never look at the beautiful scenery; there's rocks down there.
Mountain Temple, Mixed media on satin spar, 12" tall
These little satin spar towers always remind me of the Guilin Karst, so I turned it into a tiny mountain! To make a mountain temple I looked at lots of reference pictures of the Hengshan Hanging Temple, which is a very cool building you should look up immediately. Because it's satin spar, the mountain glows beautifully on a lighted stand and makes for a cool little lamp.

This is opalized wood from Virgin Valley, Nevada! It is a type of petrified wood in which the plant cells have been replaced with butterscotch colored opal.
Opalized wood from this locale is fluorescent because it contains uranium! This specimen is detectably radioactive. So even though it looks like butterscotch, please don't eat it!
Do you know how to tell whatâs a Jasper? Iâve been making a crazy art project trying to categorize all my rocks and have found out while researching a lot of them use Jasper as a trade name (kambaba, red vein, Dalmatian) and figuring out what they actually are has been confusing. I donât mind having any of these things in my collection but I want to identify what things are better!
Okay SO,
The main way to tell if a stone is true jasper or just some stone given the marketing name âjasperâ is whether or not the stone is made of quartz! Quartz is a mineral with the chemical formula silicon dioxide. (Thatâs one atom of silicon and two atoms of oxygen.) Jasper is an opaque rock made of microcrystalline or cryptocrystalline quartz. That means the crystals making up the stone are so tiny that you can only see them with a microscope. Basically, jasper is a rock made of lots of very very extremely tiny quartz crystals. If the stone youâre looking at isnât made of quartz, it isnât jasper!
Here are a few examples of things that get labelled as jasper, but arenât even quartz:
Bumblebee jasper is calcite colored yellow by the arsenic mineral realgar. Very cool, but not a jasper!
Dalmatian jasper is white feldspar with spots of black arfvedsonite. Not a quartz, so not a jasper.
Spiderweb jasper, also called Picasso jasper, is marble which gets its streaks of color from iron. Also not a jasper.
Ocean jasper, poppy jasper, leopard jasper, kambaba jasper, and rainforest jasper are all varieties of rhyolite, a super silica-rich volcanic stone made of needle-shaped crystals of quartz, feldspar, and other minerals. Although this is technically not jasper, sometimes these stones get called âorbicular jaspers,â which is sort of its own category.
Unakite is a combination of green epidote and pink orthoclase. It is so incredibly not a jasper that any shop or website labelling it âunakite jasperâ should be considered highly suspect. Seriously, this is a huge red flag that they donât know what theyâre talking about/selling.
Basically, the first thing you should do when determining âis this rock jasperâ is just google what itâs made of! Metaphysical sites will lie to you, so go to geology sites for more reliable information. Mindat is a great resource for this!
To complicate matters, sometimes a rock can be made of quartz and still not be a jasper. If the microcrystalline quartz is translucent instead of opaque, we call it chalcedony. If it forms in layered bands, we call it agate. If the tiny quartz crystals are spherical, we call it opal. (You wonât be able to see that theyâre spherical, but the stone will feel more lightweight.) These are all forms of microcrystalline quartz, but none of them are technically jasper!
Fun fact: bloodstone is considered a jasper when it is opaque, and a chalcedony when it is translucent!
Anyway, this is a lot of information, so to make things easy for you, hereâs a list of stones that are definitely for sure jasper!
Red jasper. Yellow jasper. Imperial jasper. Noreena jasper. Bruneau jasper. Blue Mountain jasper. Willow Creek jasper. Brecciated jasper. Mookaite (technically a form of radiolarite, but come on, if weâre not counting radiolarite and chert as jasper then weâre splitting hairs). Picture jaspers such as Biggs jasper. Polychrome jasper. Morrisonite. Carrasite. Bloodstone (also called heliotrope). Snakeskin jasper. Petrified wood. Thatâs all I can think of off the top of my head! Hope that helps!
I am back from the rock show! I drove for several hours through some pretty heavy thunderstorms to attend this one, and came home with my smallest haul ever. Still, I'm very happy with these pieces!
First up, kammererite! This sparkly purple mineral is a chromium-bearing variety of clinochlore. This piece came from Turkey.
While this mineral can form wafer thin, mica-like crystals like other clinochlores, this piece features fantastically well-formed spiky octahedrons. What nice crystals!
Kammererite's color is idiochromatic, meaning the color is an inherent part of its molecular structure! (The vast majority of minerals are allochromatic - naturally colorless stones that get their colors from inclusions and impurities.)
Gobi agate, from Mongolia! Agates in the Gobi Desert get naturally polished by wind and sand, wearing away some parts of the banding and leaving others standing out as ridges. Usually these ridged bands form circular eye-like patterns, but this guy's a weird one! Super wrinkly-looking specimens like this are sometimes called "tendon agate." Hey, with that shape and those wrinkles, doesn't he look a bit like... no, I shan't say.
Another jasper for my collection! Anyone who's been following my blog a while will recall that I have been obsessed with collecting "fine jaspers" recently - the porcelain-textured, extremely fine-grained jaspers which can make "egg" formations. This material from the Black Sea in Turkey is a fairly new find, and might just be one of those! No eggs here, but even in this unpolished piece we can see the distinctive streaks and clear color boundaries that mark nodules of fine jasper. I'm totally adding it to my jasper shelf.
Here are a rough specimen and a polished specimen of shattuckite! The rough specimen features a thin layer of shattuckite growing both on and inside of a quartz crystal! The polished piece has polka dots of deep blue azurite!
With the distinct tealy blue of a copper mineral, this stuff can often be found hanging out with its cousins, malachite, azurite, and chrysocolla. However, shattuckite is much rarer than those minerals! Both of these pieces came from a mine in Namibia.
Here is my new Most Valuable Mineral, and the reason I only came home with a few rocks this year. I blew the whole budget on Her. This super uncommon mineral is a huuuuge crystal of sapphirine! (Like seriously, most sapphirine on the market are dinky little thumbnail specimens; this thing is massive.)
The name sapphirine means "resembling sapphire," but the two gemstones aren't related. Sapphirine is a magnesium aluminum silicate, and is a metamorphic rock that forms under intense heat deep in Earth's crust. Cut and faceted pieces of it exhibit STRONG pleochroism, meaning they change color depending on the viewing angle. However, you'll seldom see it faceted because it's rare enough to be pretty much unknown as a gemstone, and only of interest to mineral collectors.
This big crystal was mined in Madagascar, from a deposit discovered in 2023! Crystals from this locale set the new best-of-species standard for sapphirine. How cool is it that we're still discovering new mineral locales?
