i can understand changing elements of a story for an adaption (and im a big advocate for this! no adaptation can or should ever strive to be completely faithful to its source material) however. cutting the nobody part from the odyssey is a huge indicator that you have fundamentally misunderstood odysseus as a character i fear
How dare you hide these in tags?
Finding out Hans Zimmer is a transphobe genuinely had me falling to my knees
Thank you blastybaku for explaining this!/gen
If you've ever heard a movie score and thought "holy shit, this is incredible", there's like, a 50% chance it was Hans Zimmer who composed it.
This is a pretty major letdown, ngl.
Anyways, fuck transphobes, which includes Hans Zimmer, apparently.
Anyway shoutout to John Williams, amazing composer and probably the one who made the other 50% of "holy shit amazing" soundtracks (Jurassic Park, Star Wars, Superman, and incidentally the original Harry Potter theme and score) who famously worked closely with the first openly transgender woman to be nominated for an Academy Award, Angela Morley. He respected her, and so far as I can see, has never made transphobic remarks.

Ok so thanks for voting on this but i need you to reblog it too
My tumblr sexyman post blew up overnight, RIP my notes.
I'm learning that apparently a lot of people think "tumblr sexyman" as a phrase was coined with the first major sexyman poll that Sans won. Which is not correct, but explains some of the confused people trying to argue with me that "skinny can't be a requirement if Sans won!"
I have been here since 2011. I was here for (and annoyed by) Oncelercest, and Wheatley thirst, and Mishapocalypse.
The Sans victory was in 2022.
I promise you, that poll did not coin the term.

thought too hard about MRI machines today and had this come to me in a vision
mri accident is literally one of my biggest anxiety freakouts. i dont care about being in the tiny loud tube, im so scared of a secret piece of metal i dont know about in my body will tear through me like a knife through butter. what if i ate a quarter in my sleep
Quarters George who eats a $10 roll of quarters every night is shredded into a fine mist my the MRI
TIME TO POST ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITE IMAGES!!!!
Back when I worked at the hospital, I had to take MRI training and it was my favorite thing every time. It was only like 10 minutes long and went a little something like this:
Hey. The MRI is basically a really big magnet and by basically I mean it is and we literally never turn it off. It's like really big. Really really big and powerful and The Magnet is always on. We don't turn it off Ever, for any reason. We mean it bro, The Magnet is literally always on. It's crazy strong and will definitely kill you. So don't bring any metal into the MRI room, man. You will fuck up the machine (because The Magnet is always on) and then you will die (again, because The Magnet is always on). Here's some fun questions for you to test your understanding!
1) The ______ is always on.
2) The Magnet is ______ on.
3) How often is The Magnet on?
4) The Magnet is always __.
5) The Magnet is always on. T/F
6) The Magnet is usually on but we know to turn it off for you because you're a very special boy :) T/F
7) My weak fleshy body can survive the wrath of The Magnet. T/F
8) Look at this 500 lbs steel hospital bed, which The Magnet has crumpled into an origami crane. Imagine if that was you.
9) Is The Magnet ever off?
10) Sometimes we turn The Magnet off. T/F
Thank you for taking MRI training. We hope you learned that The Magnet is always on, because it is. It's on Right Now and it will be on every time you come to the MRI. Have fun and remember: The Magnet is always on!
I love you MRI training. The Magnet is always on.
In Nona the Ninth, we find out John's early achievements are bigger versions of things Harrow's done: puppeting corpses, making a bone dome, arm shenanigans, etc. Also, he rubs at the same spot on his temple she had sliced up to keep Gideon out.
The parallels are just to get you thinking about how they mirror each other
Harrow's life is leaking into John's dream; this isn't how it happens
Harrow and John are connected through Alecto; she's unconsciously stealing ideas
Someone is scheming to arrange the parallels
I'm 6th, I have my own analysis
I'm 8th, this is blasphemy
Harrow and John have really similar necromantic achievements. What explanation do you think is most likely?
I don't know if she's unconsciously stealing ideas, per se, though that was still my vote in overall spirit, but I think it's very much a mix of general parallels and the soul connection. Maybe not in coming up with it (though not necessarily wholly un-influenced by that either?), but as a part of her prodigious understanding. Being 200 corpses and a general overachiever even before that is also a huge factor, not discounting that at all, buuuut...
While there are of course several instances of both of them knowing things about the other that they shouldn't, one bit that's particularly interesting here is when he's first teaching them about River travel:
“You’ll have to keep your minds—I can take your physical bodies, but your souls won’t go with them, not without you holding them steady.” “Physical transference past the liminal boundaries,” you said, and were surprised by the knowledge coming out of you, as though it weren’t your own. “This is deep Fifth spirit magic.”
>:) And this especially alongside multiple points emphasizing that Harrow has been neglecting her spirit studies. So yeah, I definitely think there are times she reaches for knowledge and unconsciously draws on more than she "should" have. That it's at least a factor in mastering perpetual bone so quickly and raising her own dome shield on the ruins of the cow wall and so-on.
-
Bonus that yeah Harrow was always prodigious as said, but her most impressive acts didn't start until after she broke into the Tomb—and she spent her whole life thinking it was her own skills as a necromancer that allowed her to break in, but we later learn it was just that she happened to be smeared in Gideon's blood. Getting the door open had nothing to do with her own merit, and imagine how she'd feel learning how long she'd been tapped into this secret extra source rather than any of her greatest works being purely on her own. It wouldn't invalidate the hard work she put in, not entirely, but it would still feel so much like cheating...
Anyway on a tangential note, if I'm write about Gideon being a third facet of the god soul and her basically inheriting a lot of her sword skills from Alecto too, this is something they can suffer in common. 😌
Imagine them both feeling like everything they've done barely matters, like they've always been some incidental pawns in a bigger game, big fuckup piles of shitty luck. And then imagine Harrow's stubborn ass going too bad and taking as much control of her own life and fate as she can anyway even if she can't ever be sure a decision is fully her own, and Gideon resolving to follow her. Imagine them trying to define themselves more clearly within this tangle of souls and be better than the parts that came before. Maybe drag the whole tangled mass to be better with them.
I also voted for connected through Alecto, abd in addition to prev’s I wonder if perhaps John may be (intentionally or subconsciously) setting Harrow up to take over for him (many remarks about being tired and having done this for a while iirc) even before realizing her cav she ate was his biological daughter and the potential power Harrow could have
I can’t explain too much further rn cause I’m pretty stoned but that was a thought I had reading this
:) I MEAN...
She was nine, and she’d made a mistake. She was seventeen, and she’d made a mistake. Time had repeated itself.
The above is more debatable if it's connected but...
“Oh, time … time,” said a voice from the doorway. “Time means very little … mastery does. This temple stood for ten thousand years untouched by all but time’s clumsiest pawing … but then its master was the Master, for whom even the River will part. Time is nothing to the King Everlasting.”
and
“It’s coming for you, Reverend Daughter!” said Teacher. “Oh, it’s coming for you—and once it’s got you, once that rock’s rolled away, once that tomb’s levered open, the Emperor of the Nine Houses will never know peace ever again! The King is dead! Long live the King!”
and
Harrow turned away from the hand, and crunched out, barefoot, over the wet sand—her feet slapped with each step—and she stood ankle-deep in the River, disbelieving.
Before her, the waters parted, speared-through and mute, for the enormous lance of a tower—a tower that had never been there before; a tower that soared, impossible and deadly grey, out of the waters—a tower of grey bricks, lurching out of the River as though gasping for air. An impossible, cone-capped tower—a belled tower; she could see the steeple, but the bell cot was too far from shore to see the bell.
“I’ll start there,” she said.
And she stepped into the River. She took another step, and she walked, and she walked.
We do have to wonder why now of all times that The Tower Has Reactivated, and why it would call to Harrow.
So yeah, I think John does see Harrow first and foremost as a daughter and as part of that a potential successor. He's also projecting Alecto onto her but Alecto is simultaneously a partner and friend and mother and daughter and teacher and student and patron goddess and power source and abuser and victim and beacon of hope and bottomless pit of guilt and despair and about a billion other things to him so like, that's not not-seeing her as a daughter even if exactly what all it does mean is wildly up in the air and surely going to be a problem either way.
But I do very much ALSO think ALECTO is kind of trying to make Harrow her new John, and John is torn between relieved by this and terrified for himself and for Harrow and for the plans he's worked toward for so long. "I was trying to save her," he says, having surely seen her golden eyes before the lobotomy. But then much later, the resignation, arguably a soft warning, "God is a dream, Harrow." And as she stands on the shore at the end, she senses zero malice toward her. She's no longer afraid of him, and she used to be. And when she leaves he doesn't try to stop her. I think he believes no one could handle this shit any less terribly than him, but at this point would also dearly love to be proven wrong. And if Alecto is recognizing something in her... maybe...
This is beautiful
An example of why one should use the Oxford comma.
LOL. I think they tried to fix it.
Nice try. Still no.
IDs: 2 variants of a "Toronto Star" headline for a book review article about new historical fiction books. The first reads: "Sylvia Plath, [comma] a New York vigilante and Shah of Iran featured in latest historical fiction."
The second reads: "The latest historical fiction books take inspiration from Sylvia Plath, [comma] a New York vigilante and Shah of Iran." There is a subheading reading "We review 'Daffodil Days,' 'Lady X,' 'Love Lane' and 'Mistress of the Persian Boarding House.' /end IDs.
the original, were it to mean that Sylvia Plath is a vigilante and shah, is missing an appositive comma (a pair of commas that separate a clarifying dependent phrase from the rest of the sentence, like the commas in the part of this sentence outside the parenthetical).
without the appositive comma, the only grammatically correct way to read the sentence is as a list without the oxford comma.
it is confusing because the comma in that place and the order of the list may prime you to read it as an appositive phrase, added to the fact that newspaper headlines drop helping/auxiliary verbs, and this headline did not clarify that there were multiple separate books with different subjects.
[i am a strong proponent of oxford comma, *especially* for three-item lists, just because it is clearer and more aesthetically pleasing. however, the sentence is grammatically correct to the intended meaning, and readers misinterpreting on first read does not mean it is wrong.]
the new phrasing... oh boy.
the new phrasing is now completely grammatically ambiguous as to whether it contains a list or an appositive phrase, because an appositive at the end of a sentence can be denoted by a comma and a period rather than 2 commas.
they fixed one problem with the ambiguity of the first headline by clarifying that it is about multiple separate books, but in doing so, their new phrasing adds proper grammatical ambiguity to the subject(s) of the books.
the second headline can reasonably and correctly to English grammar rules be parsed as either:
"Three subjects of new historical fiction books include writer Sylvia Plath, a New York vigilante, and the Shah of Iran." (the intended meaning)
or, "Multiple historical fiction books have been published about Sylvia Plath, who was also a New York vigilante and the Shah of Iran."
both are equally correct readings of this headline!
while the first headline was colloquially ambiguous but grammatically correct to the intended message, the second headline tried to fix the misinterpretations by clarifying that there were multiple books, and providing a list in the subheading of the books in question. [the list also does not use oxford comma, per the paper's style guide i'm sure, but it is completely unambiguous due to both the single quotes as title markers and having more than 3 items on the list.]
however, the rephrasing of the headline actually introduced more ambiguity, because it is now completely grammatically unclear whether there exist at least four books featuring Plath as a vigilante-slash-Shah, or multiple historical fiction books with a wide variety of subjects.
Always remember that the EU did a study in 2013 about the effects of piracy on media publishers and found that there is no correlation between piracy and sales! (And then they tried to hide that study bc that's not the result they wanted)
So piracy is at worst not even a problem, and at best it's free advertisement.
Source: (the link to the actual study is in the article)
In 2013, the European Commission ordered a €360,000 ($430,000) study on how piracy affects sales of music, books, movies and games in the EU
Plus this one:
A new report out of the UK once again deflates the common narrative that pirates are exclusively looking to obtain free stuff.
