THIS is a coordinated, pre-planned moment on Shane's part. This is after he executed Ilya's move during a game (which he also spent hours practicing beforehand), so we can readily assume that Shane ALSO carefully practiced his russian pronunciation in this instance, in order to impress (and turn on) Ilya

Again, this implies that Shane will not fully comprehend what Ilya is saying, he just wants to hear his voice.

Maybe people are conflating not knowing specific words or dropping articles (Which I DO think Ilya keeps doing for his entire life. That's a first language lock in thing, not an English competency thing) with Ilya's comprehension? Just people who don't know what second language learning / living is like ig

It's All Stars and a camera catches them sitting together on the bench during the skills competition, leaning in and whispering to each other, clearly trying to be sneaky. They're both kind of smiling, looking like they're trying not to laugh. Then Ilya says something that makes Shane crack up and have to hide his face while he's trying to pull himself together. This moment gets giffed and everyone is dying to know what made the famously cool and collected Shane Hollander laugh like that.
