Kiss of the centuryđđ
It was common knowledge between Timbit league coaches, premium menswear brands, and the MHL, that there was not much that could deter Yuna Hollander from a task.Â
She loved having a task, she excelled at having a task.Â
Her current task, while with a bit more moving parts than others, was her most interesting task since Shane was 4 and Get Him into the MHL slotted into her mind. This task was a curly haired Russian, that she spent the better part of the decade indignantly annoyed at, sitting in her living room looking through a baby photo album with her husband while her red-faced son pointedly watched an uninteresting rerun game on the television.Â
She leaned against the doorframe, allowing herself a moment to enjoy something she was starting to worry she would never have - Shane with a partner. Over the years, her vision of her sonâs future shifted from him and hockey-loving, kind wife to him with a husband. But never could she have thought Rozanov would be that husband. Not that they were husbands - apparently they were only boyfriends as of a few days ago.Â
Still, she always joked to her friends that Shane was married to hockey. His hockey rival and second best player in the league was probably as close as he could legally get to marrying hockey.Â
She must have let out a small laugh that Shane misinterpreted as being directed at David showing Ilya photos of his fifth halloween - the first one where he was old enough to choose his own outfit. And, exactly two months after he started playing hockey.Â
âMom!â He whined. âFully grown adultâ her ass.Â
âYes, honey?â
âA hockey player, Hollander?â Ilya teased, delight shining through his features.Â
âNot just any player,â he grumbled.Â
âYouâll never guess what he was next year.â
âNot the same one!â Shane protested. Ilya must not have realized that he stumbled into a decades long argument that no, Shane, dressing up as different hockey players is not a different costume.Â
Eventually the conversation transitioned into dinner. After it was decided there wasnât much at the house, and they couldnât go out with Ilya with them, something that sent a little pang of hurt through Yunaâs chest, they all got on their various food delivery apps to look for a suitable place.Â
Then eventually settled on a sushi-fusion restaurant that Ilya found and his phone was passed around for everyone to place their orders.Â
When Ilya got his phone back, Shane leaned over and asked, âhow much is mine and my parents?â
Ilya scoffed, a little insulted. Though he shouldnât be, Yuna considered, Shane had always had a very rigid sense of fairness and would get upset if he thought something was unfair. A lot of people found it annoying. Yuna found it incredibly sweet.Â
âI am worth 12 million dollars, Hollander, I think I can afford DoorDash.âÂ
â12 million?â Yunaâs eyebrows shot up. Because, what. That couldn't be his total net worth, could it?
âYes, I am very rich.âÂ
âNo, thatâsâŚâ she trailed off. âWhat are you spending so much money on?â
âJesus mom, you canât just ask that.â
âWhat? Itâs a perfectly reasonable question. Between his MHL salary and sponsorships, thatâs low.â
âThat is low?â Ilya looked at Shane. âHow much money do you have in bank?â
Shane groaned. âYouâre as bad as her. And most of my assets are tied up in investments and stocks.âÂ
Ilya had a blank look. âOkay.âÂ
âIlya, do you have a financial advisor?â Yuna asked. âOr a wealth manager?â
âI think so?âÂ
Yuna clicks her tongue. Task.Â
âShaneâs net worth is public information - heâs worth about 120 million. He has about an eighth of that in liquid assets - money in the bank.âÂ
âYou really have that much money?âÂ
âHeâs the highest paid player in the league,â Yuna said with no small amount of pride. She did negotiate a ground breaking 8 year 50 million dollar contract after his rookie season. âHe also has nine premium sponsors, not to mention his investment portfolio. You should be nearly at that too - you two have had very similar careers.âÂ
âHmm,â Ilya shrugged and turned to her son. âIs okay, you can be my - what is the word, sugar daddy?â
âNever say that again.âÂ
âAnyway,â Yuna continued. âI can send you some recommendations for an advisor. I mean, it's your money of course, but it can go fast. Especially with how early hockey players generally retire. Or if you get injured, god forbid.â
âNo, itâs,â Ilya shifted in his seat, eyes cutting to Shane. âThat is good. You can send advisor details. Thank you.âÂ
âOf course,â Yuna dismissed. Ilya thanked them much too often. But it didnât feel performative. It felt genuine.Â
~*~*~*~
Eventually, Yuna got an opportunity to sit down with Ilya and his new financial advisor. He had asked her, somewhat shyly, if she would attend their meeting. Now that he and Shane were out, he had decided to take her up on the new advisor. But, as he told her, he was still not so good at English business terms.Â
She had felt so warm that he asked her.Â
She felt a little less warm that he asked her not to tell Shane what they were doing. As far as Shane knew, they were getting lunch.Â
She understood when she started looking over the documents the new advisor laid out for them.Â
Anger, hot and uncomfortable rose up in her chest. But she pushed it down because that was not what Ilya needed. Ilya, who was sitting with his arms crossed, not looking at either of them. A faint blush on his cheeks.Â
Because his very limited investment assets were barely four years old. For the first five years of his career, he had sent nearly everything back home. There were payments to his father, his brother, his step-mother. Trusts for his niece and his step-motherâs children. There was a house bought in an uncleâs name. There was a private school for his niece. There were random wire transactions to his brother for odd amounts - 20k, 15k, 56k. There were even salaries paid to private chefs and house cleaners. There was a weird split of money between Russian and American banks.
What wasnât sent back was spent on severely depreciating assets like sports cars. Rounds of alcohol at bars and clubs. Thousands of dollars spent on random Amazon purchases, designer clothes, etc. His Boston house with a criminally high interest rate. He hadnât even bought it outright, even though he had plenty of money to do so. He had maxed out credit cards with debt he would wipe out today and not even feel it.Â
His liquid assets, which were basically his only assets, werenât even in a high yield account. At least, not as high yielding as it could be.Â
He was almost living paycheck-to-paycheck in a very rich way. More like contract to contract. He would exhaust his 8 million dollar/2 year contract and then sign another one. His contracts, too. They were much lower and shorter than Yuna would ever allow her son to have with his stats and experience.Â
His financial history read very much like an 18 year old boy who had been thrown into a foreign city, with a language he wasnât totally familiar with, and no one with his best financial interests at heart. Only a family that wanted to exploit him and a new team he desperately wanted to impress.Â
But Yuna pushed all that away, shook it off, and considered the plan. âThis is a great starting place.â
Both Ilya and the advisorâs eyes shot to hers but she refused to back down, leveling the advisor with a hard look.Â
âIt is?â Ilya asked.Â
âOf course,â Yuna gathered up a few documents. âYou have 17 million dollars in liquid assets. You have a great contract with the Cens for three more years. Thatâs a much better starting point than the vast majority of people.â
âNot as good as Shane,â Ilya pointed out.
âNo,â Yuna agreed with a little smile. âBut if you go broke, Iâm sure Shane will let you be his sugar baby.âÂ
ilya being all jittery and nervous before yuna and david coming to visit the cottage for the first time because he wants their approval plays out very interesting to me. heâs vacuuming all the nooks and crevices, heâs organising and reorganising the shelves and shane just going âbaby itâs okay theyâve been here when i was behind cleaning beforeâ and ilyaâs just no no shane you donât get it it has to be perfect and so shane sighs and pushes ilya on the couch and just
lies on top of him until yuna and david comes

Hollanov + text posts (part 2)
ilya and shane are having the laziest, slowest morning sex before practice. shane got so soft and relaxed afterward that he just didnât want to get up. ilya cooed at him saying âmy sweet baby, you donât have to go, itâs optionalâwith his face buried in shaneâs hair, holding him tight and shaneâs like âbut i donât want you to leaveâ and ilyaâs like âi donât want to leave you either but iâm the captain, sweetheart, canât stayâand shane goes âno, you can stay here with meâ while hiding his face in the crook of ilyaâs neck and ilya chuckles âshane hollander, golden boy of hockey, saying that i should skip practice?â he asks kissing shaneâs temple and sniffing him and shane just nods against his neck and goes âyes, we should just retire and spend all of our days like thisâ with his voice muffled and ilya tightens his hold and says almost whispering âi wish, sweetheart, but later when youâre back to yourself youâll definitely not like this idea anymoreâ and shane just lets out a little âmmmhâ and ilya goes âletâs get up, ok?â and shane says ânoâ and ilya snorts holding a hard laugh he loves when shane is soft and acting spoiled like this but he gets up anyway and pulls shane with him so they can take a bath together, go make and eat breakfast and go to practice, cus he knows shane will definitely regret it later if he misses it
When the health food store unionized, something wild happened that I thought was just a goofy one-off, but makes more sense now.
There was a big push to eliminate "degrading jobs" but the strategy was to eliminate the position, then create a new position outside of the bargaining unit to do the work. So like, we wouldn't have dishwashers, but we'd have people who washed dishes that weren't eligible to be in the union.
I was like A) what the actual fuck? Dish washing isn't "degrading", it's fucking vital. B) What the actual fuck? You want to create a union just to exploit different people?
There were enough of us to be like "Absolutely the fuck not," and put a stop to it, but I was absolutely flummoxed that people involved in a union would say that out loud. Working with more leftists now, it makes sense.
I think it was coming from a background that viewed labor as necessary to accomplish anything, but advocated for the equitable distribution of the gains made by labor... and then being thrown in with people who just thought labor was icky.
The first time someone told me that busing tables was "degrading", I was like "Oh, uhh, yeah, like it's very necessary work but under compensated for how vital it is?" and they responded "No, touching plates that other people have eaten off of is disgusting."
But I want to eat off of clean plates. So somebody is going to have to touch/clean those plates. And I respect that person and want them to be able to afford to live.
Those people sound like a guy I'd make up to be mad at.
I mean, that job definitely had a Truman Show vibe. If they hadn't been in-person interactions, I'd think I was getting trolled.
Just to put a bow on it:
In bargaining, someone on the Union side suggested that we eliminate all the cashiers and exclusively use self-checkouts (they were a cashier and didn't like it). The organizer told them that the union wasn't in the habit of eliminating bargaining unit positions. (This is the same person I've talked about how said that "as a prison abolitionist" we just needed to execute most criminals.)
When I explained holiday scheduling (time off requests granted in order of seniority, shifts assigned in reverse order of seniority). Someone was angry and said that time off requests potentially being denied "wasn't in the spirit of the union". When I pointed out that our departments made like 30% of our annual revenue between Thanksgiving and New Years and that required production staff to be working, they said that we just needed to create a class of positions ineligible for the bargaining unit that wouldn't be able to request time off. (Which again, most of us figured we'd just rotate holidays or something, but assumed that some holiday production was mandatory.)
I was on leftie tiktok (as a creator) for a bit and I saw this attitude there as well. I specifically remember one argument around cleaners where someone said that employing a cleaner was, like, ethically bad, and that "after the revolution" we wouldn't have cleaners.
It got me thinking, along with Ann Russell talking about how to treat cleaners (being a cleaner herself), about how we conceptualise domestic service as particularly degrading in all its forms, when, really, why is that? Why is paying someone to do something intrinsically bad?
Like, even in a moneyless, gift economy society, there would still be people whose primary contribution to their communities would be cleaning. Some people like to clean, and are really rather good at it.
I've talked ad nauseam in the past about how British attitudes towards cleaners and other service based positions today are the descendants of Victorian attitudes. That is, both the attitudes of conservatives and many progressives of that time. The trade union movement was particularly exclusionary towards service workers.
I think people on the left thinking about forms of labour can sometimes be worse than people on the right. People who have taken these positions generally just conceptualise them as something you need to do to get by, and there are particular employers where these positions are degrading but in general the jobs themselves aren't.
Yeah, that really sums it up. There's stuff that needs to get done, so I'll never be of the opinion that it's degrading work. I worked in kitchens for a long time, and every other position is reliant on having clean dishes, so nobody can really be "above" washing dishes. The shitty thing about washing dishes or busing tables is how people treat the people doing it. The work itself is vital.
And some of those jobs are like, sure, you can throw almost any warm body at it and get it done adequately, but you still run into people where you're like "Holy shit, you're good at this."
People doing a job most people don't want to do should be paid MORE in order to get people to do it. That's how it would work if we weren't mired in a schema assuming that less-frequently-desired jobs are the province of people who "can't do better" and "deserve" poverty because they have less value as people.
Peer reviewing the tags: #these attitudes are also why ppl are weird about sex work#and weirdly enough visibly disabled people working - like esp thinking of like#places that employ ppl w LDs as workers and volunteers#what they FEEL is 'these people make me uncomfortable'#and they say 'they shouldn't have to do that'#so the solution is. no visibly disabled people getting to work#the fact that. they want to work. and want jobs#is irrelevant#too many people base their politics off their like. gut feelings of discomfort and unease#which are completely disconnected from both practicality and actual morality
Also, this is descended from racist and sexist ideas.
Domestic labor is less valued because it was (and is) traditionally seen as "women's work." Cleaning, cooking, minor maintenance in the household--all of that is traditionally unvalued and unpaid women's labor in the modern economy. Particularly non-white women in the USA:
The Social Security Act ... since its enactment in 1935, ... has ... exclusionary and discriminatory statutory provisions which have disproportionately injured African Americans and other persons of color. ... These provisions are exemptions, one in the original Social Security Act of 1935 Old Age Insurance program, excluding agricultural and domestic workers who were disproportionately African American, and one in the 1972 Amendments to the Act, excluding residents of U.S. Territories from the Supplemental Security Income program ... These exclusions are grounded in historical racism... Jon C. Dubin, The Color of Social Security: Race and Unequal Protection in the Crown Jewel of the American Welfare State, 35 Stan. L. & Pol'y Rev. 107 (2024).
Thinking about Shane learning the Russian words for âmy little bearâ because Ilyaâs so large and imposing but so soft and his hair is so fluffy- but he also delights in knowing he can use it on Ilya to needle at him and sweetly annoy him. He can imagine Ilyaâs faux-irritated brow crease, followed by wrestling Shane into the couch to prove heâs no little bear- heâs a grizzly bear whoâs going to eat Shane for breakfastâŚ
So he works to get the pronunciation down, and finally springs it on him one day when Ilyaâs just come in from the lake, hair air dried and floofy and heâs all open limbs and soft edges.
The moment the words fill the space, Ilya goes silent, and tears start to fall. Shane panics, and closes the gap between them to hold his husband close with a crushing grip.
âWhatâs wrong? Did I not do it right? Did I say something bad?â
Ilya stays quiet for a moment, trying to control the inevitable break in his voice when he speaks. When it comes out, itâs wet, and wounded, like blood seeping out the mouth of an injured animal.
âNo, no. Itâs ok- my mama, she-â another small sob. âShe used to call me that. I have not heard it in a very long time.â
Shane knows he doesnât need to reply, or to fill the following lull.
He just needs to stand there. Solid and unyielding.
Arms a vice around Ilyaâs torso, large hands stroking down the damp skin of his back. Soothing kisses pressed like a comforting brand to his temple, his cheeks, his eyes. Urging the tears to flow because they need to. Loving his man exactly how he needs to be loved.

the communications intern was sent by the centaurs team players to make a funny video with ilya and they approaches him saying âif you can answer this one question without mentioning shane at all, even once, weâll give you a prizeâ and ilya says âokay, doesnât seem too hardâ and the intern gives a mischievous smile and asks âwhatâs the perfect routine for a good game day?â and ilya begins âfirst i have to wake up cuddling withââ and he stops and looks at the intern who has this smug grin on his face and ilya goes âitâs harder than i expectedâ and the intern replies âthe whole team bet youâd loseâ and ilya raises an eyebrow and says irritably âthen letâs start overâ he composes himself and begins âmy perfect routine is to wake up in my wonderful bed, then brush my teeth and have a hearty breakfast, go to the gym to work out my muscles, drink a protein shake, then take a shower and go practice hockey with my amazing team whom i love like familyâ and the intern ends the recording and goes âcongratulations, i genuinely didnât think youâd pull it offâ and ilya gasps putting his hand over his heart and goes âdo you guys think iâm obsessed with shane?â and the internâs like âno?â and ilya replies âi am, whatâs my prize?â and the intern calls out louder âbring in the prizeâ and shane wearing a sweatsuit and glasses with his hair still wet from a recent shower enters the room looking confused and ilya sighs and goes âitâs the best prize in the worldâ and he raises his arms so shane will come closer and hug him, and shane does. ilya buries his face in shaneâs stomach and says in a muffled voice âshane, the intern is being mean to meâ and shane snorts as he strokes ilyaâs curls and looks at the intern who is laughing at the situation, and shane goes âpoor big russian man being bullied by a 20-year-oldâ and ilya lets out a whine âyeah shane, thank goodness you came to my rescueâ and he looks up and pouts and shane kisses him and says laughing "letâs go home, you big babyâ stepping away from ilya and holding out his hand for him to take so he can stand up and they both say goodbye to the intern. the next day in the locker room the guys start handing shane $10 each, the whole team bet that ilya would lose and shaneâs grinning the whole time because he knows his husband is just as competitive as he is.
Everyone: omg Hollander leash your dog, Ilya is barking at opponent hockey players again
Shane Enabler Hollander: ok so Ilyusha this player has had zero assists in the entire season, he got drafted last, and finally - and this is crucial - he once scored a goal in his own team's net
Ilya Heart Eyes Rozanov: thank you my ShaneWiki this is valuable data, off I go
a short au idea where shane dropping by supriste at his girlfriendâs house because he was on a work trip and when he knocks on her door it takes a while to swing open, and when it finally does heâs face to face with a half-naked man heâs never seen before and his girlfriend appears behind him and turns all apologetic and starts crying when she notices shane at the door and starts saying itâs not what it looks like and begging for forgiveness, but shane just stands there barely listening, only having eyes for the guy whoâs leaning against the doorframe looking completely unbothered, smirking like heâs actually enjoying the whole scene, and it makes shane so mad, so he pulls his hand away from his exâs grip, breaks up with her, and leaves. he goes straight to his car but doesnât turn the engine on, just leans his forehead against the steering wheel and stays there for like fifteen minutes, until he hears someone knock on his window and looks up and itâs the guy, so he rolls the window down and snaps âwhat do you want?âand the guy goes âi didnât know she had a boyfriendâ and shaneâs like âso what?â and the guy, smirking just like before, goes âif i knew she had a boyfriend who looked like you, i wouldâve been chasing you instead of herâ and shaneâs thinking this situation is absurd (and secretly pleased) and just asks âwhat the fuck is your problem?â and the guy goes âmy problem is that i clearly chose the wrong one, now you can help me correct it, right?â and he winks at shane, who just flips him off, rolls up the window, and drives away. later shane is at a bar telling what happened to his friends when someone slides into the booth next to him and itâs the guy and his friend rose goes âshane, this is ilya, heâs the guy i met at the painting class and was telling you that you two would be great friendsâ and shane is sitting there horrified and speechless while ilya gives him that same satisfied smirk and goes âoh shane, weâre definitely going to be GREAT friendsâ and now shane is truly fucked
I do think that Shane gets a Russian language tutor. He sees that Ilya is always having to think, speak, and translate in his second language. And he knows that Ilya is fluent by this point, but if he's serious about forever with Ilya (which he is) he wants Ilya to be able to communicate with his boyfriend in his native language. He also saw how much his grandparents struggled with learning English as adults and how much more expressive and talkative they were when they spoke Japanese at home together.
So he gets a tutor. He meticulously researches her (she's from Moscow, so he'll learn from someone with Ilya's same accent). She's signed to more NDAs than he can count. She has 10 years of experience, she's certified to teach English and Russian, and she has 4.8 stars on MyTutor.
Shane pays her a frankly concerning amount of money to make house calls. Twice weekly, unless he's on the road, she arrives at his apartment to teach him foundational Russian. She gives him workbooks, Russia cartoon recommendation, podcasts for beginners, etc. He tells her he's learning because his boyfriend is Russian and she outlines a course that focuses on domestic language first (as opposed to travel or business). She even teaches him what she calls a 'culture course' with lessons on Russian music, food, and various traditions.
She's only a few years older than Shane and he actually finds himself looking forward to her visits. At this point, she's the only person other than his parents that knows he has a boyfriend.
About 4 months in, Shane finally feels comfortable enough to ask about what he'd been very excited about learning.
"You want me to teach you how to talk dirty to your boyfriend?" Ekaterina raised an eyebrow.
"Um," Shane blushed. Was this a little too far? Was this inappropriate to ask of a tutor? "Yes? If - If that's okay, I mean."
A slow smirk spread over her face. "This will be fun. Fun for me, now. Fun for you, later."
"I made a list," Shane admitted. He wasn't going to back out now, he put a lot of thought into his list. He turned to it in his Russian notebook and handed it to her.
She scanned over it indifferently. "You will use all this in one night?"
"Yeah, probably. Is it too much?"
"It is good you have a Russian man," Ekaterina said. "They have good stamina. Mostly, anyway."
And while it was a little embarrassing for Ekaterina to correct his pronunciation of please let me suck your cock, it helped that she seemed just as comfortable with that as there is tea on the stove.
Though, maybe he shouldn't have learned those phrases at the same time, because Ilya will never, for as long as they live, allow him to forget asking, while down on his knees and with excellent pronunciation, please let me suck your tea.

So, I tried something new, again, and I kinda like the darker colours in this one. Plus, I made a point of going back in and redrawing Shane's freckles because I felt like they needed to be a highlight of this one. Made with texture overlays, mostly hand-drawn overlines (I tried to keep it minimal and focused on the eyes and lips).
