With help from Ntawnis Piapot, a local Cree journalist, Hylton met with community elders, victims’ families, and women willing to share their experiences. Happy Charles, the girls’ mother, went missing in April, and some of the daughters have since had vivid dreams about where she might be. They’ve been in touch with the authorities, but with little trust in the police’s ability and willingness to help, the sisters and their grandmother have started a search on their own.

Tracey George Heese, forty-two, sits on buffalo skin in a teepee in Saskatchewan. Heese’s mother, Winnifred George, was found dead on an Edmonton park bench over twenty years ago. “I think of all the buffalo that were slaughtered [here],” Heese says. “Are Aboriginal women to be sacrificed as the buffalo have? Not enough is being done, the Canadian system is derailing us.”

Diane BigEagle is pictured with her grandchildren, Cassidy and Talon, and their cat, Waffles, in the family’s favourite park in Regina. BigEagle’s daughter, Danita, disappeared over ten years ago, and BigEagle has been caring for Danita’s children ever since. “I want them to be happy,” she says. “When I get depressed, they get depressed. I have to make them think [Danita] is somewhere out there…that she’s coming back.”

Shayleen Goforth, twenty-seven, stands near Wascana Lake, where she used to spend time with her sister, Kelly. In September 2013, Kelly’s body was found in hockey bag, left in a garbage bin in an industrial area of Regina. The killer was a white man, a stranger to Kelly, named Clayton Bo Eichler; in September 2016, he was convicted of killing Kelly and another Indigenous woman named Richele Bear. “I had to forgive him to feel peace within myself,” Goforth says. “I was so sick. I went to my elder and I had a good sweat and a smudge, and I asked God, ‘Help me forgive the man who killed my sister.’”

Michelle Burns, thirty, sits with her ten-year-old niece, Dannataya, in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Monica Lee, Dannataya’s mother and Michelle’s twin sister, was murdered in January 2015 by a thirty-eight-year-old white male she had met that night. He received a thirteen-year sentence. “I feel lonesome a lot,” Michelle says. “I have to remember that [Dannataya] is watching me. When I walk, I try to walk with good intentions, so that when she’s older she won’t end up lost. Her mom would want good things for her.”

Fort Gibson High School sophomores used historical events of native people being used in human zoos as a way to show “school rivalry”.

This school is Cherokee nation, at a school with a large number of native people, and they mocked the trauma and oppression of native people.

The school principal and superintendent brushed off the issue. I’m tired of white people getting away with this stuff. White people and POC (including natives) with a colonized mindset will always use the excuse “well I’m not offended so you shouldn’t be” as a way to silence racism.

First of all, no lesbian asked you permission to be solely same-sex attracted. So fuck the hell off with “it’s okay” or “you’re allowed” when it comes to lesbians being women who are only attracted to other women. No one asked you, we do not need your permission.

There is no such thing as a male lesbian. 

Transwomen who consider themselves “lesbians” are autogynephiles and fetishize lesbianism (x), and we do not accept, let alone welcome, them into our community. 

These gross men come around, put on some makeup and a dress, and all of a sudden they are women??? We do not accept that, we will not lie for these people. Transwomen are transwomen, and heterosexual transwomen (aka straight men in dresses) don’t deserve an inkling of our respect, seeing as they do not respect womanhood nor do they respect lesbians.

I’m not sorry, for as long as transwomen do not respect lesbians inherent sexualities, we will not “respect their identities”. Why should we? Transgenderism is pure misogyny and gender-roles repackaged so it seems appealing to GNC kids and kinksters. 

For kinksters, transgenderism is the ultimate way to live out their gross male fantasies of “being a woman”, and so many of them start off with “sissy porn” (x)

For GNC people, it’s nothing more than conversion therapy. Why be an ostracized, marginalized lesbian when you can be a “perfectly straight transman”?

Do you not see what your gross ideology is doing to young homosexual people everywhere? Do you not stop for even one second to question why hyper-conservative individuals like Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner are a-okay with transition, with transgenderism, but oppose same-sex marriage????

Are you really so blind that you think women are oppressed on the basis of wearing dresses? Do you not see how fucking misogynistic and sexist it is to equate womanhood with femininity????

Not all women are feminine. Not all women wear dresses and put on make up. So why is it that when a dude lets his hair grow out and forces his deep voice into a higher pitch he suddenly becomes a woman? Is womanhood really that easy to usurp? Are we really that worthless that anyone can be us, anyone can feel like us?

No. We are not. Womanhood is intrinsic to femaleness and vice-versa. I will not condone that you assholes tell young lesbians they are attracted to femininity. 

Lesbians are attracted to womanhood, to femaleness, not femininity

To say otherwise is extremely homophobic and harmful to young homosexual girls who are trying to figure themselves out. To say otherwise forces lesbians into thinking they have to date transwomen in order to be “good lesbians”, otherwise they’re just bigoted.

Whoever sent us this ask to our blog, which is made by lesbians and for lesbians, is an asshole homophobe. And we will not let you lie to our young lesbian sisters about this. We will not permit you to make women hate themselves, to make them question their whole sexuality and identity.

Transgenderism harms young GNC people, it harms lesbians. It’s hurting us, and we will not stand by and let this happen. 

We don’t care if you don’t love us, we don’t care if you hate us. We do not care if you throw words at us. TERFs or witches or man-hating bitches. We’ll take your meaningless words and crush them. We’re stronger than you, we don’t need your permission or your love. Women have been hated by society since the beginning of time, we know how to handle it by now.
