It's done! I am so freaking thrilled with how this came out. It was immensely fun taking the old poster and trying to figure out a balance between the old art and a modern take on fire management, as well as how to make it my own while retaining as much of the original style and color as possible. And I'm not normally one to stick my whole logo on my illustrations, but I wanted to match the original poster which as the USFS logo there, so!
Shout out to @vaspider for helping me puzzle out better wording for the bottom chunk of the poster.

The Death Rides poster was produced in 1933 by the US Forest Service, but I've sadly never seen the specific artist named anywhere. It reflects the pretty typical attitude of the time that fire=bad, that it leads to death as a negative thing. It's also one of the most popular pre-Smokey Bear fire prevention posters. This thing is EVERYWHERE, especially in wildland fire circles. It's on posters, shirts, even a few logos.
I have never seen a GOOD reproduction of the thing. I feel like there's got to be a good quality one sitting around somewhere, but it sure doesn't seem to have made its way onto the internet. They're all grainy with strange color splotches, but that's never seemed to effect its popularity.
I do really love the concept of the original poster, and the simple phrasing that drives home the clear message. For my redo, I wanted to keep the overall look and feel, and the simple, clear message, but changing it to match modern understandings of fire and its place in the cycle of life in forests. I set out with the following goals:
Show fire as a part of the natural cycle that helps keep landscapes healthy.
Make the horse less distressed looking.
Remove the gendered language from the messaging.
Keep as much of the original posing, composition, and colors as possible.
Showing the renewal cycle was the trickiest part, because the composition really didn't leave a lot of room to show the regrowth portion. I think I came up with a good balance, though, by having the forest very overgrown, dark, and unhealthy, then having the strong dividing diagonal/arrow of fire bringing light into that dark overgrowth, and the open, regrowing portion behind the smoke and flames. I also had the regrowth coming from the horse's hooves so that the horse is more of an active piece of the story, rather than being forced through the whole affair.
The regrowing plants in the background are fire poppies and fireweed, as well as a few distant aspen saplings, all of which are some of the first plants to come back after wildfires move through. Death also got a fire poppy as the clasp of their cloak.
For the phrasing, I came up with "Death Renews the Forest" almost immediately, but I had more trouble with the bottom portion. I wanted the phrase to not be gendered anymore, so switched it to "we." Initially I thought about something like "When we are educated in its use." But I wasn't a big fan of "use." While the poster does feature Death doing an intentional prescribed burn, I also wanted the phrasing to apply to letting naturally lightning caused fires burn. So less "use" and more embracing fire overall. This is especially true given that in the US we have, unfortunately, gone back to a full suppression strategy as of 2026 thanks to an executive order from the orange menace. So, despite decades of research showing how much harm that causes, we've been ordered to start doing it again. Which, to me, just makes this redo of the poster even more relevant right now.
Spider helped me puzzle out some other phrasing ideas, and I really liked this final one. I think it is balanced really well with the top portion of the text, and the overall message of the poster.
So yes! Had a lot of fun with this. I probably will do some more redos of other famous prevention posters at some point, but I'm not sure when or which ones.

I'm a cane user and pretty much as soon as I saw this cane that @soupdwelling designed based on the cane Grace has in the book I knew I had to have it.
I'm still learning how to 3D model so it took me about two days to model it and then a good day to print all the parts and then assemble. The painting took about 5.5 hours over two weeks; 2 hours for each of the patterned bits and the rest of the time was spent layering the paint for the solid colour bits and painting the charms for the handle.
This is definitely more of a for show cane than a useable one just because of the material and way the parts are connected. But I am going to make a useable one. Next steps are to alter the file so that I can have a solid dowel through the middle for strength, to make sure that I can print the handle in TPU rather than PLA, and to make space in the feet to insert proper rubber cane feet! When I make that one I'll be buying the appropriate colours of filament so I don't have to hand paint it all or worry about the paint scratching off.
This was so so much fun to make and I can't wait to get started on a useable one!!

so today a public health official guy came into my class to give a lecture on disaster awareness and he was talking about house fires and mentioned that the reason people most likely die during a house fire is because they refuse to leave their pet inside or they go back to get their pet. and right when he said this my friend immediately turned his head and looked at me and in that moment I had the most complete and genuine acceptance take over my body. I would 100% in front of my family and Jesus himself walk straight back into some raging inferno that was once my house to go get my fat cat. I nodded back
the best part of this post is reading all the tags from animal people who would also go back to save their pets. like no hesitation. walk backwards from heaven straight back into hell. someone even said they would go back for their fish. amazing
If you are a person who would walk into a blazing inferno for your animal, and your pet has free movement around the house, hereâs a training exercise that could help save you both:
1) Set off your smoke alarm or play the sound on your phone (if your home has no smoke alarms, pease get some!)
2) stand BY THE FRONT DOOR to hand out treats
Do this a couple times and then keep it up NO EXCEPTIONS. Accidentally set the alarm off cooking? Treats by the door. Smoke alarm sound on TV? Treats by the door. Changing your smoke alarm batteries twice a year like youâre supposed to? Give them a test run and your pets get treats by the door.
Most dogs and cats will clue in VERY quickly that hearing that specific sound means go to the front door and wait for treats.
If thereâs an emergency and even if you leave by another way, you will still know the most likely place your pet(s) is and can direct first responders to help.
You can also do this for any other kind of emergency alarm. My friend had both her cats trained to go to the front door for a tsunami siren.
Not to be the fun police but I want to add, PLEASE never go back into a burning house to rescue anyone/anything after escaping, leave that to the firefighters! Youâre putting not only yourself, but also the firefighters who might have to drag you back out in more danger!
I understand not wanting to leave your pets or family behind, hell I donât know if Iâd be able to do it and I grew up with fire safety being drilled into my head.

There are two main factors at play when someone says that a condom is too small: (1) the band size is too small & (2) the condom is not sustainable
The band is at the base of the condom. Itâs latex is made thicker here than the shaft and is, therefore, less elastic. The band keeps the condom secure so it does not come off mid-insertion and so penial fluids do not leak from the condom. To do this, the band has to keep a very tight grip on the base of the penis. This is the main complaint from people using condoms too small for them. The shaftâs plastic can stretch comfortably, but the band is not so lenient and uncomfortably or painfully squeezes the base of the penis.
Condoms in use experience a lot of friction. For a condomâs shaft or band to be stretched farther than it was intended weakens the latex. The band and shaft are then at risk of being broken from the friction. It fitting does not mean it is sustainable.
If your partner says a condom is too small, believe them and cease from doing anything that requires a condom. If your partner says a condom is too small but is trying to pressure you into unprotected sex, kick them out the door.Â
Yep. At first, I thought that condoms were supposed to be that tight. Iâd seen those âcondoms can fit on a two liter bottle so quit your complaining,â I had no basis for comparison because dudes donât talk about that shit, and no one wants to be that âHURR HURR GUESS I NEED A MAGNUM XLâ guy.
Now wear that condom on your arm for a while. Ten minutes at least. Still got sensation in your arm?
One of the many failures of sex ed in this country is the notion that thereâs only two types of condom, âfits everyone except those elephant-trunk-cock freaksâ and âfor elephant-trunk-cock freaks or lying braggartsâ (and yes, thereâs implicit shame in the idea of people needing non-âregularâ-sized condoms and the genesis for such is pretty likely rooted in some really nasty viewpoints about certain groups of people but Iâm digressing).
But penises come in a LOT of dimensions, and not all of them fit right in a ânormalâ condom. You donât need to have a monster down there for a condom to be legitimately painful and/or break mid-act. This can leave a lot of people legitimately unawares that it doesnât have to be like this. (I was, early on.)
Condom too tight? Thatâs a real problem for the reasons pointed out above. But itâs a solvable one at most drug stores, which generally have a broader (ha ha) selection than your Walmarts or Targets. Or suck it up (ha ha) and go to an âadult boutiqueâ (a proper one) where theyâre likely to have even more options and letâs be real here the people working at these arenât gonna give you Looks over condom selection. Or shop at said boutiques online if you REALLY need to avoid the in-person thing.
And if you think youâre gonna be doing things requiring condoms, HAVE YOUR OWN. Yes, even if you personally donât have a penis. Buy a box of large-size as well just in case.
And donât let anyone give you guff over it, and donât let anyone pressure you into unprotected sex because of condom size.
For the record, even if youâre doing things that donât involve a penis at all, condoms are good to have around. They make great dental dams on the fly, keep toys clean, and keep body parts clean if your partner is using their hands. :) Also, keep some non-latex ones around in case you or your partner has a latex allergy. Trust me, there are few places worse to have that allergic reaction. o_o
Here! Here is a condom size chart!!! There are probably! Others! You can check!!! So you can be comfortable when getting up to shenanigans. Because condoms that donât fit are sooo uncomfortable and also a safety risk. A properly sized condom can really help improve sensation in the person with the penis.
Previous sex shop employee here! Itâs worth noting that if a condom breaks itâs probably because there wasnât enough lube on the INSIDE! Yes the come lubricated, but yes they need more! They use a water based lubricant and that gets sucked right up into your skin. If the inside of a condom gets dry itâs the absolute worst, especially around the band for comfort, but thatâs not the part that will snap.
Adding lubricant inside increases pleasure and safety, it will blow your mind. Please do it.
Also! Most people suffer from a very low grade allergy to latex and one of the coolest things on this earth is polyisoprene condoms. Theyâre 100% less smelly, just as safe, and feel way better. Our preferred brand was Skyn but thereâs other brands worth trying.
As embarrassing as it can be to go into an adult store I promise itâs where the Good Shit is kept. Not the KY lube (for the love of god donât buy it, itâs killing your girls cooch) the good lube, and the condoms in many sizes and options that you wonât see in a supermarket.
