Wait, what do you mean this never happened? Anyway, Iâm glad Kristoff has a boyfriend now.

The picture in the background of the second one
Tama is boss
THE TRAINS HAVE CARTOON TAMAS ON THEM
Sad update everyone, Tama recently passed away⌠An estimated 3,000 people, including railway officials, attended Tama the catâs funeral on Sunday, days after she died of heart failure aged 16. [x]
For those who havenât read articles about it, the local shrine elevated her to a god. Sheâs now the Eternal Stationmaster and patron god of the station.
Beautiful.
Now Iâm crying thanks
and a new cat was hired right?
yep! her name is Nitama (essentially âsecond tamaâ or âtama IIâ) and she served under Tama as an apprentice before being appointed her deputy
she works very hard
Everytime this crosses my dash, I reblog. It is the law.
Iâm crying at 11pm over train cats
Nitama, already now a mature cat (born 2010), has a protege named Yontama (fourth Tama, b. 2016). There is no information available for either the physical befellment or tragic self-disgrace which has removed Santama from contention.
^Nitama majestic, and below with Yontama
Yontama.
a legacy
okay but actually what happened to santama (or sun-tama-tama, which is her name because itâs a pun on santama) was that she was basically sent to train for the position in okayama and they liked her so much they refused to send her back
âSun-tama-tamaâ (a pun off of âSantamaâ, lit. âthird Tamaâ) was a calico cat sent for training in Okayama. Sun-tama-tama was considered as a candidate for Tamaâs successor, but the Okayama Public Relations representative who had been caring for Sun-tama-tama refused to give the cat up writing, âI will not let go of this child, she will stay in Okayama.â [25]
As of September 2018, Sun-tama-tama is working as the stationmaster in Naka-ku, Okayama and appears occasionally on Tamaâs Twitter account.
Every time I see this post thereâs new info and it gets better
You are only allowed to scroll pass this after you pay tribute to the great Tama Station masters.
The shrine of Tama DaimyĹjin (Great gracious deity Tama), next to the Kishi station where she worked.
Nitama presenting her yearly offerings to Tama DaimyĹjin on the anniversary of Tamaâs Death, June 23 (The offerings are presented by the company president, as Nitama is a cat and thus canât hold the offerings herself) (Not pictured, but also present, Yontama)

Stop stealing my dang book
HEY, UH
The people who are putting my tiny self published book (Here, the World Entire, aka the book I poured my whole dang soul into!) up on piracy sites / requesting a pdf of my book on piracy sites:
CAN YOU LITERALLY THE FUCK NOT
Iâm very glad that people want to read my book! It brings me joy that I very truly cannot even begin to explain! Itâs basically my dream come true! But please donât steal my work!
I donât have the backing of a big publishing house. I self published, so thereâs no advance for me. The only money I make off that book is through sales, and although itâs not a lot at all per sale, itâs the only source of income that book produces. I very strongly believe that writers deserve to get paid for their work. That includes me.
If you want to read my book but really canât justify using the funds you have to do so (because hey, weâre all in different financial situations, I get it), I know itâs in a couple of library systems so itâs worth trying that. Iâm reluctant to send out free ebooks now because the last time I did that someone put it on a pirating site, but youâre welcome to ask and I may decide to do so on a case by case basis.
Please, please donât pirate books. Authors really donât generally make a lot as it is. Weâre not all JK Rowling. Minimising our already low revenue stream, especially self published authors, is shitty. It actually upsets me to think that someone who follows this blog might be one of the people pirating or asking for pirated copies. If it is you and you see this, Iâm asking you to stop. I will be telling you next time.
Ehhh im pretty pro.pirate if you cant afford it you cant afford it. Pirate sites get you more audience which means more people can share it.
If you wanna stiffle that be my guest.
But your only gonna damage yourself.
Literally no. Stop. Desist. This is a super Bad Take, and also incredibly inappropriate to add to my post here. Let me explain.
I donât need exposure. I donât need âaudienceâ. That doesnât pay my bills. That doesnât compensate me for my months of hard work. I donât need people to 'shareâ my work for me free of charge by stealing it and distributing it for free without my consent.
You fundamentally misunderstand how the publishing industry works. It doesnât work by people stealing books. That sure benefits the reader, but it royally fucks over the author. Work being shared on pirating sites does absolutely sweet bugger all for me as an author. Audiences who know they can get my shit for free arenât going to suddenly start paying for it just because theyâve now heard of me, so your comments about building an audience are asinine; itâs not building a paying audience for me, but an audience of people who steal my shit. Some audience.
Iâve sold hundreds of copies of my book based on the quailty of it (presumably; either that or my mum has been bribing people). Itâs selling itself pretty well, thanks. Itâs been performed as a play! It has pretty good reviews! I donât need to eschew being financially compensated in exchange for more audience, especially not if that audience isnât going to fucking pay. An audience gained from a pirate site is useless to me. It does nothing for me. I have one book out currently. Every person who steals it is someone who doesnât buy it. Itâs another sale lost. Itâs nothing gained. I donât have a back catalogue for people to buy once theyâve heard of me. Itâs theft and then fuck all benefit to me.
Writing isnât all about making money and itâs a privilege to have your work out there and read, but itâs also work, and in a capitalist society, that merits being compensated for the acknowledgement of that work. Iâm not just a money hungry piece of shit (or Iâd have priced my book at an actually decent profit margin) but I need money to, y'know, eat. Writing is one way I do that. I canât do that if people steal my work.
I donât give half a sodden shit if youâre pro pirate. Iâm not, and itâs my livelihood on the line here, so maybe consider peopleâs feelings before adding your two cents to a post. Youâve basically just ignored my feelings completely in order to add your spicy hot take to a post because apparently your misinformed opinion is more important than my livelihood. Itâs not. Thereâs a time and a place to espouse your viewpoint. This was categorically not it.
Bought a copy, it looks dope.
Piracy, like a lot of things in life, is a subject with nuance. If you are curious to see a big blockbuster made by a major movie company thatâs raked in millions in a single weekend but you donât want to add your money to those millions because you think the series has taken a sharp dive in quality - you could make an argument for that.
If a billion dollar company is charging extortionate amounts for software you need for your livelihood, pirating that is between you and your conscience.
If you bought a thing but due to DRM or whatever you can no longer access the thing you bought, you can decide whether to pay again or pirate.
But pirating something from a billion dollar company is not the same as pirating a self-published book, or an indie-game, or even a book from a small press. The margins in publishing are tiny. Most authors have a second job because they earn so little from their writing. If you pirate their stuff, youâre hurting their chances to support themselves with their writing.
Libraries exist. Basically every writer Iâve met is pro-library. If you canât afford to buy a book, get it from the library instead. In the UK, I get a few pence when people borrow books from the library (the actual system is convoluted, but it means I can earn a little bit of money from library borrows). Donât pirate books. Whether you pirate other stuff, Iâll leave to your judgement, but seriously, pirating books directly hurts the authors.
#i would argue even pirating books from rlly popular authors from big publishing houses is super bad #like #maggie stiefvater talks about how people pirating the raven cycle books meant the series almost got cancelled half way through #cos people were pirating them rather than buying #so to the publisher it looked like no one was interested or reading them #even authors with good publishing deals arent usually rich #hearing about authors with 6 figure book deals is the exception #thats like extraordinary #i will say this time and time again #you camt pay lip service to the idea that artists should be payed for their work and then turn round and pirate books #everyones cool with paying artists until it comes to actually paying artists
Yeah, thatâs all nice and dandy, but like, a lot of books cannot be found in the libraries of my country. Like, English books and shit. And I have no money to order books from other countries. I have tried online libraries, but a lot if times I just couldnât find the book I wanted. So yeah, sometimes I either pirate a book or not read it
Oh look. Another âbut I want and therefore am entitled to free shit! If I want to read a book, then I have every right to read that book, even if it means stealing it! I can do what I want because I want to read it! Fuck the authorâs rights to earn a living!â defence on my personal post in which I explain why being a book wanker is bad. Revolutionary. âThatâs all nice and dandyâ? Jog on with that. Weâre talking about peopleâs livelihoods, not tea in Jubilee Park. Thereâs nothing ânice and dandyâ about it.
To reiterate the whole, y'know, point: donât be a book wanker, and donât defend being a book wanker on my personal post about potential lost income as an indie author. Just donât. Write a sexy tweet about it if you have to, but donât do it on my post, because I have neither the patience nor the inclination to be nice about it.
Hot tip: get your library to order the book in. Wait and see if you can buy it in a deal. If I want to read a book but canât afford it and canât get to the library for some reason⌠I donât read it. We arenât entitled to everything at all times.
Dude⌠youâre so angry and irate and being senselessly rude about this that Iâve lost all interest in paying for and reading your book in the first place - only because you sound so mean-spirited and entitled. I fully understand wanting to be compensated for your work, and I am certain you poured so much of your heart and soul into this, but are you genuinely going to squabble over the internet about a small fraction of lost sales, only lost because the person wishing to read it cannot in any other capacity access it? Do you really think people feel good about not being able to afford books? You think they donât feel some sort of shame over it? You think it does hurt them having the author chew them out over it? Have a little perspective and understanding, my dude. I hope peace finds you, because your fans donât deserve to be subject to you berating them for being too poor to fund their interests.
I canât. Please just donât engage with me at this point. I have had it up to my eyeballs with this. I have made this response as cordial as possible, but hoo boy, I am seething at this. I think my eyeballs might be vibrating.
Dude⌠youâre so angry and irate and being senselessly rude about this that Iâve lost all interest in  paying for and reading your book in the first place - only because you sound so mean-spirited and entitled.Â
âBe nice about people stealing your work, or I wonât read it. Iâm going to tone police the way you speak about people stealing your work, and use your work as leverage. Asking people not to steal from you is entitled, and you have to talk about it politely, or you donât deserve a readership.â Did I parse that correctly?
Iâm not going to reply with scorching vitriol to that sentiment, but know that the temptation to do so is astonishingly present.
I fully understand wanting to be compensated for your work, and I am certain you poured so much of your heart and soul into this, but are you genuinely going to squabble over the internet about a small fraction of lost sales, only lost because the person wishing to read it cannot in any other capacity access it?
[Image description: a quote from the initial post, which reads âIf you want to read my book but really canât justify using the funds you have to do so (because hey, weâre all in different financial situations, I get it), I know itâs in a couple of library systems so itâs worth trying that. Iâm reluctant to send out free ebooks now because the last time I did that someone put it on a pirating site, but youâre welcome to ask and I may decide to do so on a case by case basis.â]
Not in any other capacity, hmm? Except for the one I explicitly mentioned up there? Letâs ignore that one; it doesnât play into the narrative of me being âangry, irate, senselessly rude, mean-spirited and entitledâ.
Do you really think people feel good about not being able to afford books? You think they donât feel some sort of shame over it? You think it does hurt them having the author chew them out over it?Â
Iâm sure people donât feel good about not being able to afford books. Iâm not Jeff Bezos. I canât afford a lot of stuff I want, books often included. That doesnât mean I steal them. I either ask for them for gifts when possible, or I save up for them, or I find other (legal, not harmful) ways to get them, which are listed in this post here. And if people donât want the author to âchew them outâ over it, then they shouldnât keep replying to my post about how pirating books is harmful with comments about why theyâre going to continue pirating books, especially when Iâve expressly asked people not to do that on my post.
Iâd also like to add that none of the comments saying that they pirate books have been from my followers, or reblogged directly from me; none of them had any interest in reading my book. They came across this post through reblogs and are not familiar with me or my book (most people arenât; Iâm not exactly JK Rowling). These are people speaking hypothetically about pirating books in general. They havenât reached out to me as an author they want to read and said âI want to read your book but canât afford itâ; theyâve seen an author explaining how piracy is detrimental to authors in general and theyâve chosen to comment âbut Iâm going to do it anywayâ. I have asked people not to do this. Theyâve done it anyway. Iâm going to get annoyed.
Have a little perspective and understanding, my dude. I hope peace finds you, because your fans donât deserve to be subject to you berating them for being too poor to fund their interests.Â
Do not patronise me like this. Do not. Donât you dare speak to me like that, as though youâre some benevolent Zen Arbiter, deigning to grant me the merest moment in your ocean of infinity to float gently down from your cloud, from which moral vantage point you have objectively decided that my income is irrelevant, and spread your omniscient, calm wisdom upon me, an overly-emotional prole. Do not tell me that you hope âpeace finds meâ when I am writing a post about how people pirating books affects my income and, by extent, my actual life. Yâknow, the one I have to live in a capitalist society which relies on income. I am not âberating my fansâ, namely because, as I mentioned, the people I replied to above are not people who follow me. I am also not shaming anyone for being unable to afford books; as Iâve said, Iâm not a billionaire. Iâm largely financial stable now, but this hasnât always been the case. You absolutely need to recognise that this works both ways. Authors donât make a lot of money from their books. When you speak of people being âtoo poor to fund their interestsâ, you neglect to mention that there are many authors who are too poor to pay their bills.
Iâm not complaining about this because boo-hoo, I only made ÂŁ5,000 in book sales this quarter and my Jaguar needs refuelling. I havenât even broken ÂŁ1,000 in book sales since I published it 3 years ago (as I mentioned before, this is in part due to my own decision to set a very low profit margin, hence why my book only costs ÂŁ4.80; itâs the lowest I could set it whilst still making any money. I would probably put a higher value on my labour and work and do it differently next time. Hindsight is 20/20).
So in my case, my book sales supplement the money I use to buy food and go about my daily life, along with the salary I make from working 6 months of each year. I generally donât work the other 6 because of my PhD workload, which is not funded. I donât have much excess when I have to make a half year salary stretch to a year. Iâm not on the breadline by any means, mostly because Iâm able to live at home when Iâm not working (which isnât ideal, but is the best financial choice for me atm) but I am not in a position to keep losing income from people who donât buy my book. I can cope with the odd lost sale here and there when someone sends the file to a pal, sure, but when someone is uploading my book as a mobi file on a pirate site, or asking for a pdf to be uploaded, then thatâs a potentially endless pool of lost sales from people downloading that file.
I am absolutely sick to the teeth of people gaslighting me on this and telling me that what I really care about is getting rich and taking a big olâ poo on poor people, rather than pointing out that book piracy overwhelmingly harms poor authors and marginalised authors, especially authors from working class backgrounds, disabled authors, authors of colour, and queer authors (of which Iâm one, hello). Iâm sick of getting hatemail about it. Iâm a âcapitalist elitist bootlickerâ, according to one sweet anon, for asking for fair compensation for my labour. It is so, so draining. Youâre making me out to be some abhorrent, illogical, unreasonable banshee - oh, sorry, I wonât put words in your mouth; Iâm just âangry, irate, senselessly rude, mean-spirited and entitledâ, after all - lounging about on my bespoke futon and wailing on Tungle dot net about how poor people steal my illustrious masterpiece and deny me my millions. That is categorically not the case. I am writing about how book piracy harms people who are already in a very low income bracket. Authors are usually the poor people too. Thatâs the part youâre not getting.
Do not tell me âIâm not going to read your book now because youâre being mean about people stealing your work.â Thatâs honestly one of the most petulant, spiteful comments Iâve ever received on this blog. You donât have to read my book! I donât expect everyone to! Heck, Iâm still frankly amazed when anyone does! Sometimes I have to pinch myself and check Iâm not dreaming! But holding my work over my head - work that you fully acknowledge IÂ âpoured so much of [my] heart and soul intoâ - like this and using it as some kind of twisted bargaining chip in an attempt to get me to just shut up about something that is actually affecting my life is just so, so mean-spirited and misguided. Donât read it, that is completely and objectively fine, but donât throw that fact in my face just because Iâm not making myself supine and letting people steal from me.
Iâm going to be logging off for a bit now. I donât have the space to read any more comments like this. It honestly feels like this whole debate is sucking my soul out through my nostrils. Itâs like screaming book piracy harms low income authors and that makes it bad! into the void, and having the void scream back why do you hate poor people so much, elitist scum?! I just wish the void would listen, really. Or at least stop calling me a bootlicker for asking people not to steal from me. Ho hum.
âI am very unique and smart and enlightened because Iâve decided to criticize a woman who wants to get paid for her laborâ is a hell of a take.
Anyway, Iâm gonna go buy Anwenâs book because jesus Christ people are the worst
This seems like a good moment to remind everyone of how outrageous it is that book publishers are in the middle of doing everything they can to put up roadblocks and make sure that you canât actually get books from the library.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.sfchronicle.com/opinion/openforum/amp/How-a-publisher-is-punishing-library-users-with-14572856.php

I am super into casually Jewish Jane Foster, who doesnât keep kosher or know halacha or really do much traditioanlly Jewish outside of trying to honor her Holocaust-survivor grandparentsâ memory, right up until the universe is so much bigger than she can comprehend (and sheâs spent her whole life looking at the vast unknowable universe but right now is so much) and she shows up at the synagogue her parents still attend, awkward and uncomfortable, like âSo I still donât think I believe in God, but I dated one, and I apparently got snapped out of existence for five years, and now I can lift a magic hammer, and thereâs a really hot lady king who for some reason wants to talk to me as much as I want to talk to her, and I have questionsâ and the rabbi is like âQuestions are what weâre good at. Have a seat.â
jane: now, iâm sure we donât have time to unpack all of that
rabbi, absolutely delighted: oh, it has been a while since youâve been here
We absolutely have time to unpack all that.
thor, enthusiastically joining jane in exploring her heritage: is bilgesnipe kosher?
valkyrie, slightly hesitant about joining jane in exploring her heritage: is mead kosher?
darcy, about to introduce val to manischewitz:
The đ sauce verses sour cream debate
thor and valkyrie have strong opinions, while jane and darcy are like âboth? either? itâs fine?â then thor and val take it to rocket for adjudication.
Rocket, standing in the doorway at 3am, wearing an actual nightgown and old fashioned sleeping cap: Youâre all a bunch of idiots. [slams door]

Darcy, still staring at the door: Was⌠that a talking raccoon in a night cap?
âŚI am confused. Is this implying that Rocket Raccoon is Jewish?
I thought it was implying Rocket Raccoon was god
oh, man, I am so happy to tell you this.
applesauce vs sour cream isnât about whatâs kosher. itâs about what is the yummiest condiment on latkes.
so iâm making the Very Controversial assertion that Rocket Raccoon is an acknowledged arbiter of taste.
Itâs because:
Rocket Raccoon will try anything and
No one seems to be able to find fault with his arguments about food.
hey, i just remembered that i love turning everything marvel into being about food and rocket raccoon
Rocket Racoon watches YouTube cooking shows nonstop, consistently cooks nothing but absolute trash at all times except on like Passover or shit where he throws everyone out of the kitchen and cooks the most insanely good Passover dinners anyone has ever seen, and the only details anyone knows are that he buys no less than 12 lbs of fresh beets for it and says the secret is the vinegar.
okay, but like. can a raccoon technically prepare a kosher meal? does he, a living sentient raccoon, make the cooking space unclean?
So I am the worst person to answer this but first of all, only an especially dickish and very orthodox rabbi is gonna call a thinking and feeling being inherently unclean and two we are talking about casual Judiasm which gets VERY casual and could easily overlook a raccoon.
And heâs technically not a raccoon.

purge of 2002? of 2012? what ARE those?
Oh, how quickly the past is forgotten.Â
They are part of the reason A03 is a thing now. Not the whole reason, but part of it.Â
The Great Purges of 2002 and 2012 are when ff.net got a wild hair up their ass about THINK OF THE CHILDREN and nuked any fic posted on there that was explicit. Thousands upon thousands of nc-17 smutfics were lost.
Itâs what led to the creation of alternate hosting sites for smutty ficâŚAdultFanfiction was the one I went toâŚbut thousands of fics would never be recovered.Â
Shit like the Great Purges and the Strikethrough of Livejournal eventually led to fans banding together to create A03, which I would have absolutely KILLED for when I was 15.
Back up ao3 was created by fans?
ItâsâŚright on the main page.Â
I love this because I will bet you that persefv has read that bit we are all so inundated with hyperbole and advertising that says that the consumer is somehow in charge of whatever product they are shilling that we all just assumed this was another sales tactic.
But weâre not even⌠selling anythingâŚÂ *quiet sobs*
No ads. No subscriptions. No data selling.
We are the definition of âwhat it says on the tin.â
Is there any way to spread this info?Â
THE OTW WAS CREATED BY FANS SO WEâD HAVE AN ARCHIVE THAT WASNâT SUBJECT TO CORPORATE REVIEW.Â
Nonprofit, so that nobody could ever say, âthis isnât making enough money; itâs getting shut down.â (See: Geocities, Quizilla, Figment, G+.) With lawyers involved and a firm awareness of the legalities of fanfic, so nobody would decide âweâve gotten a nasty letter from a megacorporation with lawyers, so weâre hiding because we canât afford to face a lawsuit. (Jedi Hurtaholics, Trevizoâs Millennium site.) With teams, so that an argument between co-mods didnât result in the destruction of a whole archive. (Gryffindor Tower, Detention.)
AO3 IS OUR SITE.
It is by fans, for fans. Fans do all the coding. All the legal paperwork. All the abuse/tos violation complaints. Fans make all the choices about policies. Fans decide how to run the fundraisers. Fans write the blog posts. All the volunteer staff are fans; all the people who train them are fans. Fans wrangle all the tags.Â
(And the other OTW projects, too. Fans manage the entries at Fanlore. Fans run the Open Doors project. Fans publish Transformative Works and Cultures.)
EVERYONE WORKING FOR THE OTW LOVES FANDOM. Wants it to survive. Wants it to be awesome for everyone.
(Knows that it canât be awesome for everyone; some approaches to fandom just clash hard. But they strive to minimize those clashes as much as possible, because they love fandom.)Â
AO3 is not some company that decided, âweâll make a site for fanfic and thenâŚâ I donât know what people are thinking is the reason. Money? Data harvesting? Tax shelter? Amusement and pity?
Nope; AO3 was fans saying, âLivejournal sucks; weâre tired of this fucked-up ârebuild every three yearsâ garbage; WE NEED TO OWN THE DAMN SERVERS.â
Thatâs the âof our ownâ part of the name. OTW isnât a âthemâ running the site âfor us.â Itâs âusâ making places for âusâ to share what we love with others of âus.âÂ
This this this.
I was there for all of that shit, and AO3 is a godsend. If you enjoy or create fanworks, support AO3, donate if you can, and remember why itâs there in the first place!!
Fandom history really does get lost quickly. For current 20-something fans, AO3 has always been there.
Itâs that time of year again. Donate if you can!

Second GIF: Black and white (original movie was in color). Mulan and three male soldier disguised as women walk up steps and flick scarves to their right. In the movie they are about to climb up the Emperorâs palace to defeat the Huns. The text reads âBoys will gladly go to war for youâ.

Freddy McConnell, a trans dad who gave birth to his child, has lost the right to be named as a father on their birth certificate.
Controversial onion maybe but not allowing parents to be listed appropriately on birth certificates is child abuse. It doesnât just affect the birth certificate, it affects all areas of a childâs life. Dorito is under so much stress because I am still legally their mother, which is impacting their mental health and relationships and performance at school. Like obviously it affects the parents too but we can deal with that far better than kids can.Â
Iâm confused. Is it saying that he should be registered as a mother, or are they trying to take his child away from him?
Under UK law, the birthing parent must be registered as âmotherâ, even if legally male. He fought against it but lost and must remain legally the childâs mother.
The only reason the distinction between mother and father should matter to the law is if they treat mothers and fathers differently, which there is no good reason to. Parents are parents, regardless of whether they birth their children, contribute any biological material, use a surrogate, adopt, or any other means that they become a parent. Which means parents should be listed as either mother or father based on the label they themselves use, or just get rid of mother and father and list Parent 1 and Parent 2 instead. Thereâs no good reason for the law to remain as it is unless you believe in bullshit gender essentialism, transphobia, AND very antiquated notions of parenthood.
In the US at least, there are different immigration procedures for children with a maternal US parent versus a paternal parent because thereâs an assumption that itâs definitely the birthing parentâs child. In medicine, it is important to be able to track maternal versus paternal lines because some things track along that chromosome. Maybe it would make sense to specifically list something like birthing parent instead of mother, but it does seem like something that should be tracked.
And if a child is adopted, they get two birth certificates and original and an amended. The birthing parent has to be listed but sperm donor is optional

My dad was a veterinarian in the meat animal industry so here is an explanation of why medium rare is a thing with steaks, but not chicken:
In beef, what you worry about is e. coli.  In healthy live cattle (and they must be healthy to be butchered for consumption) e. coli is only in the digestive tract but it can escape and contaminate the outside of the beef during slaughter and butchering.  The bacteria does not migrate to the interior of the meat as there is no circulation to take it there.  So you can eat beef where the inside is less cooked as long as the outside is well seared to kill any bacteria that may be on it.  Hamburger should always be thoroughly cooked because it is all âoutsideâ.
With chicken, the concern is salmonella, which is found through out the body of the chicken.  Chickens can tolerate it, it doesnât make them noticeably sick, but humans can not, so the entire meat must be cooked enough to kill any bacteria present in the meat.  As a note, it used to be believed that salmonella was not passed on to the eggs and in fact in the 1950â˛s, when my dad was in Vet school, studies showed it was not present in the eggs even if it was present in the hen.  Thatâs why there used to be a lot of recipes that used raw eggs, it was safe then.  However due to some change in the bacteria, or changes in egg-farming practices, it is now found in eggs as well.  The amounts are small, and if you are eating eggs within a couple days of being laid itâs probably not a problem, but store eggs are old enough for bacteria to have reproduced to dangerous levels and the liquid interior allows it to spread all through the egg.
As a side note, with pigs the concern is trichinosis, a parasite that used to be common in pigs and spread to humans through under-cooked pork.  However, it has been essentially eliminated in commercially produced pork these days.  It should be safe now to eat âmedium rareâ pork, but trichinosis was so horrible and the fear of it so ingrained that it is rare to see pork that is not well done.
^ Good addition!
I also wanted to mention that apart from the salmonella risk (which is a freakinâ big âapart fromâ), you also have the risk of Campylobacter infections. Not only can these lead to really really horrible gastro-intestinal problems, a small number of infections also cause an auto-immune response that leads to the body destroying its own myelin (the stuff around your nerves that makes them good at carrying electrical signals). Basically, your nerves stop working and even if you survive, youâll be hooked up to an iron lung for⌠a long time. I donât know how long it takes to regrow myelin, Iâm not a neurologist.Â
Donât eat raw poultry, guys
I feel like this is a good point in time to remind people that trichinosis was nearly eliminated, but the Trump just changes the rules so that the pork industry gets to do it own inspections on meat and thatâs the only inspection it will get before pork hits the shelves now.
Draw your own conclusions on how you want to proceed.
Under new federal rules, pork companies can hire workers to do some tasks currently reserved for federal inspectors in hog slaughterhouses.
While not quite true, itâs a good sentiment.
Donât pirate books, for example, because while it does hurt the publisher, it hurts the author more, since theyâre only paid by their direct sales numbers. Get the book from a library instead, since that drives a sale, supports a public service, and is free to you. (The exception being textbooks. The authors have usually already been paid all theyâre ever going to get, if they got paid at all, and the publisher rakes in an obscene profit.)
Donât pirate indie stuff, whether itâs movies, books, music, art, video games, whatever. If itâs indie, you are directly hurting a creative who just wanted to put something nice into the world, and not being able to eat directly impacts their ability to make more nice things. Caution: certain industries like video games and music are very volatile, and companies that used to be indie might not be anymore but might still be cruising on that indie cred. Similarly, a well-known and well-loved studio youâve been a fan of for years might seem huge to you but is actually still just a couple schmucks barely scraping by. Look into a company, see how big it is, and if itâs a subsidiary of something larger. If itâs just a few people, donât steal, but if itâs actually a multi-million dollar company with several dozen employees, yeah, itâs probably fine.
Do pirate from the giant names: Disney, EA, Activision, Warner, Sony, major tv networks, etc. Itâs almost guaranteed that the people who actually worked on the project were paid terribly, have gotten all theyâre going to get from it, and the company is bringing in so many billions of dollars with each project that you wonât make a dent.
THIS
I keep seeing the argument of âpirate from the giant namesâ with the implication that it hurts no one, because the company is so big.
I write for Marvel comics.
I write for Marvel comics, my reviews are good, people love the characters Iâm writing for, and our illegal downloads are through the roof, because people think piracy hurts no one. It hurts the creators who have fought our whole careers to get through a door that traditionally has only been open for straight white men. Am I the best thing in comics today? Nah. My ego isnât that big. But Iâm good and Iâm getting better; give me ten years and I might well be the best thing in comics.
And that doesnât happen if people pirate my comics and Marvel stops seeing it as worthwhile to give me money.
Oh god no. I thought about mentioning that this doesnât apply to COMICS, but decided against it bc I couldnât articulate my feeling and I regret that. Pirate comics that are long out of print, sure. The reason I started reading comics at all is that I got a real good source of Black Widow backstory that I didnât have to pay for. But if something is currently being published, fucking buy it. Buy it in trade, buy it digitally, buy it as individual copies, but with comics ESPECIALLY, because the way comics sales are calculated is so fucked up, you gotta treat them the same way as you would any indie project. Buy it, do not pirate, or youâre making sure this thing you care about will not continue.
Buy comics buy comics buy comics.
Our margins are like razors, and weâre constantly getting cut.
Concerning books, check if your country actually pays the author per time the book is checked out of the library.
Iâm from Belgium and authors are only paid once by the library when they buy the book, but afterwards every reader is a lost sale. So try to see if you can still buy certain books you really loved (and vote for people who wants to change the policy because itâs complete bullshit)
Wait no, libraries ALSO have razor thin margins and are supposed to serve the public good! The point of books is to share knowledge, not destroy packets of trees and sit on shelves unread.
They build the most of the audience that authors will eventually have. There is no voracious reader that I have met that would have become that was of while they were learning to read they had to poor hundreds developing their tastes. It is not at all fair to put libraries in the position of bleeding out their funding because they serve the public. Theyâre our public repository of knowledge.
In every other scenario not only would a person buying a book be able to pass it along to the next friend who wanted to read it, theyâd be able to re-sell it for cash. The only thing forcing libraries to pay authors indefinitely would do is slowly kill off their collections so that only new books were worth the expense of carrying them. They already charge libraries more for the physical copies than they charge anyone else. Itâs already bad enough that publishers are using the â+internet = entirely new thingâ argument to embargo books and also force libraries to constantly re-buy books.
Also I donât understand the perspective that says that every person who reads a library copy is a lost sale perspective. Profit as the sole motive for. Yes, some people wonât. But books are forever, theyâre supposed to be good enough that you want to re-read them, not the new fast fashion craze.
Plus you know what Iâm not going to dedicate my limited book shelf space to in the scenario where suddenly almost nothing is available at the library? Brand new authors Iâve never read and I have no track record of caring for their writing long term. This is also why trade comic have so much trouble getting enough traction to actually complete a story.
So yes, while Iâm sure big publishers would love the idea of being able to create a large stable of big popular authors who always sell and how they would get to reduce the amount they have to spend on advertising, finding new authors, and promotion because no one will ever find out about new up and coming authors that donât launch through them - I donât see the benefit long term to reading culture.
Plus we already have a format that pays authors for almost every read they get - theyâre called serials and generally people arenât very enthusiastic about buying them, especially when the author is an unknown quantity.
Digging in to a new book
I miss this :-(
Hospital T-Rex
Imagine being rushed into the ER and reading this as they push you through though
Lol when my appendix burst, I had initially refused to go to the ER because it was a Saturday night (which are always busy helltimes for ERs of course) - and when I arrived I was told there were eight people ahead of me. I agreed and just asked for something to drink and something for the nausea. They took my vital signs, looked at each other, and then whisked me back immediately to a room and within five minutes the ER attending physician came in (as opposed to a resident physician).
âHahaha, holy shit, am I dying?â I asked him - because HOSPITAL T-REX IS CORRECT
Okay but the T-Rex has abs drawn onto it in pen.
P90 Rex
This is 100% true. Itâs also hard though because people in ERâs are rushing around so much trying to triage so people donât get good explanations about what theyâve decided theyâre okay. It doesnât help that the physicianâs scale for bad and yours are probably nowhere similar in comparison. When they rush, that means they think itâs going to kill you in the next hour.
(I always feel sorry for the people who come in the middle of an asthma attack or panic attack. Unless you literally canât get words out, if you walked in you can breathe enough to wait for vitals, and those vitals probably show that youâre getting enough oxygen to keep you alive, even if itâs not how much your body would like. If they can get your lungs working again the same day, thatâs considered a win and not that bad of an attack.)
