One popular take on "deconstructions" of children's media I'll push back on is the idea that talking about how fucked up it is that a bunch of kids have to save the world is inherently pandering to adult audiences. Kids love it when kids' media is about how fucked up it is to be a kid who has to save the world – you've just gotta not be condescending about it.
do you live in seattle (the american city)?
yes
no
please reblog to get this poll out of my bubble, i want reach
I'm trying to make a TTRPG myself, and I was hoping you might have a place to look for useful resources in my specific niche. I am creating a game that is a synthesis of the entire white Wolf family of games. I am also creating a world for this, a high fantasy, multi-genre that is experiencing the 1660. Do you have any resources you might be willing to share? Thank you in advance for your time!
based on my limited knowledge of white wolf games, I think you would get historical utility from:
A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn: the early chapters give a look into how capitalism was born of early slavery and settler-colonialism. The section on Bacon's Rebellion, though occurring in the 1670s, lays out the messy class politics of the time.
Pirate Enlightenment by David Graeber: accounts of 17th century European contact in what would become North America and Madagascar that argues for "The Enlightenment" in Europe being born of European colonist and pirate dialogue with the indigenous Wendat/Huron Confederacy in what's now Canada, the Haudenosaunee/Iroquois Confederacy in what's now the US, and the Malagasy in what's now Madagascar.
For more big picture views of how history and the world function that I think would be helpful for worldbuilding generally
The Conquest of Bread and Mutual Aid: A Factor of Evolution by Pyotr Kropotkin: foundational anarchist communist texts that provide historical and scientific frameworks for analyzing the systems that govern life and propose alternatives, not as the product of some future threshold of technological advancement, but born of cooperation that has always been possible and has always re-emerged despite repression. Lots of good information on pre-industrial class struggle and biology that you could extrapolate with fantasy elements.
The Dawn of Everything and Debt: The First 5000 Years by David Wengrow and David Graeber: anthropological works focusing on the history of money and politics and debunking the prevalent models of linear progress from "primitivity" to "civilization" and the image of the "noble savage." If you want to understand how the world and societies function and how to conceive of your own for fiction, I think these are the two works most useful for that. I think everyone should read them, they were deeply influential on me, as was all of Graeber's work.
My general advice is always just to read more history, think about the systems and elements that shape a place and her history, and think about how any fantasy element you introduce would affect the structures or power and production that exist.
My specific advise, as the Maidist girl, is to rip out men from your setting and make something only about girls. I'm also always a fan of taking out horses because the horse is probably the animal most responsible for our prevailing class systems historically besides the man. I think those two removals would alter history more radically than like, being able to cast fireball, honestly.
Thank you so much! I appreciate the assistance. Those are good recs, I've actually read all of them (Graeber is a major influence on me as well). The 1660 year isn't a hard line, I picked it looking for a specific historical set of circumstances: the development of the modern state (in our world, that makes my world post-Westphalia, as well as post-Reformation), the emergence of cannon that can be moved easily (as opposed to a ten-ton thing that only wealthy empires can have, and only one of), and the proliferation of effective personal firearms (the flintlock musket in this case). And in fact, I *did* take out the horse, put something much more useful in there. I also removed -Rome -Christianity -Divine Right of Kings (or, as I call it, a hierarchy based on some man, and it's *always* a man, who thinks god wants him to have all the power and wealth) -Whiteness entirely (whiteness is also a fantasy concept, in that it is as real as magic and elves, it was just made by a fucking *HACK*, and did more damage) And I separated the continents by several thousand miles, so settling another continent is *insanely* expensive, and very little return, and added more water, so travelling by ship long distances is *dangerous*. Never thought of taking men out entirely. I think I removed patriarchy tho. Men aren't exactly a *class*, since it's pretty hard to go "I should be in charge because I was born with A Penis, and you should be property because you have A Vagina" when you have stuff like women who can control reality with their words, make deals with angelic generals, and are on occassion undead horrors who drain the blood of men to live.
gotcha, I'd be real curious to see what you've got when it's done! I don't know if I have much else I can recommend for this specific era, I'm generally more knowledgable about the times before and after, but as far as other readings go, I have:
Summer of Fire and Blood: The German Peasant's War by Lyndal Roper: an excellent historiography of Europe's largest uprising prior to the French Revolution, taking place in 1525 and relevant to the themes you discussed above. Christianity plays a major role, but even ignoring that aspect, the revolt is important for how it foreshadowed later unrest during the death throes of feudalism and the way it was coopted and revised by later ideologues is worth understanding, whether it be nationalists ignoring the class elements, or Marx and Engels downplaying and maligning the peasante participation to give credit to urban leadesship who, really, tried capturing existing movements and abandoned them when unable to. Mercenaries also played a major role, many of whom fought with the peasant rebels.
Foundational Description of the Art of Fencing: The 1570 Treatise by Joachim Meyer translated by Dr. Rebecca Garber: the introductory chapters give a fantastic overview of the historical context of late 16th century German urban development and the economic and cultural conditions that produced the desire for these swordplay treatises at all. I think, broadly, understanding the basics of some system of weapon martial arts is good to know for anymaid making fantasy where melee weapons still show up in any degree, but the early sections are really why what I recommend this.
I think if you've already removed patriarchy as an element, you've done the hard part and are most of the way there on removing men, since imo they're kinda part and parcel to each other and it bleeds heavily into all other class dynamics. Some people like them, and, yknow, I'm not gonna change that, but I think it's always worth stopping and really considering
1) Do I, personally, like having men around and seeing them more than I would having a woman take their place?
2) Does having men add anything to my world and my story?
3) Do I require men to convey any element of my setting, or could something else fill that gap?
and for some people the answer is yes, but I always encourage doing away with men as a default assumption and something to be included in fiction without question
Note how these columns are designed to perfectly allow the climbing of small lizards up and down their faces. This is a typical example of Gecko-Roman architecture

i'm getting the sense some of you are not actually forklift certified.
well damn . egg on my face
THE PLOT THICKENS @averagejoey2000 explain yourself
I can't believe this is how I'm finding out that I got a scam forklift cert.
I took the cargo ops class at school but my teacher explained that it doesn't give a certification and I'd only be okay for ship's crane and the school forklifts. she said I could take an online exam and get my cert. I paid 60 bucks.
I'm googling and I'm seeing a lot of resources saying that the online programs cover the classroom part of the exam but not the in person practical aspect.
29 CFR 1910.178 (l)(2)(ii)
but I did the in person practical shit at school.
the back of the card even had fancy numbers on it. I couldn't have known that this isn't the one. this website sounded more official than certifyme.net, and there wasn't one with a .gov address.
so, I emailed OSHA, and they said that so long as I live and work in California, there's no such thing as forklift certification. I have to be told how to do it every time I get the job.
Update: I took a certification class in shipboard Material Handling Equipment at my federal job. *now* I'm forklift certified, but only on ships and piers and only for this company, but also rated to forklift explosives and hazardous materials. Also I'm a woman now.
this is probably my favorite tiktok of all time and I finally got around to showing it to my dad the other day and now he comes home every day and tells me about all the places he saw crumbling concrete and says "guess they didn't add enough chinchilla flakes"
My dad has worked in construction is whole life, primarily with a company that does concrete foundations, and I immediately sent him this back when I first found it on TikTok, and he IMMEDIATELY shared it with everyone he worked with. They apparently still quote it on his job sites to this day.

pretty sure i just lost my editing gig to ai. hate and fucking war on planet earth.
like they've already made it very clear by a) ghosting me for months and b) getting my colleagues to train their stupid new ai. like i only know about this because one of my colleagues tipped me off. i imagine they're waiting to get it working before they formally let me go and fuck that. i am literally drafting my resignation lmao
guys. there has been an update. my spy colleague has informed me that my ex-boss is backtracking. the ai was supposed to speed things up because apparently i was unavailable too often but it turns out that another colleague has been lying about me telling him i was unavailable. i have email receipts proving this never happened.
this colleague also has beef with me because his documents were always garbage and i came back with a million corrections and called him out for mass copy-pasting. so he was just skipping the editing and saying i said i couldn't do it. and i lost my job because of it.
ex-boss backtracked and ended up asking me if i'd come back not as a freelance contractor but on an actual employment basis.
i declined.
shoutout to all the people reblogging the version of this before my rejection letter. and especially shoutout to those people saying they're happy for me and that there's justice on this earth. i regret to inform you that my version of justice means choosing violence.
This is a thing of beauty
more people should quit their jobs like this reading these was a treat
is it crack? is it crack you smoke? will be in my vocabulary from now on lol
That is actually from “the most popular girls in school”. It has a lot of great quotes like that you should watch it
when James Baldwin said I can’t be a pessimist because I’m alive
when James Baldwin said to be a pessimist means that you have agreed that human life is an academic matter. So I am forced to be an optimist. I am forced to believe that we can survive whatever we must survive.

The recent hot VS cold polls have made me realise that a lot of people have no idea how to cool down.
As someone from a hot country that's regularly on fire, here's some tips:
WATER IS YOUR FRIEND! WATER! IS! YOUR! FRIEND! You can transfer SO much heat into this bad boy! You cannot cool down without water!
Wrists under the cold tap. Splash your face and the back of your neck. Fan yourself.
In some countries you can buy a little handeld fan with a water sprayer.
Damp tea towel around the neck. Stick an ice pack in there on hotter days.
Half fill a water bottle with water, stick in freezer. If you use a bottle with a straw, make sure it's lying on its side with the straw side up and out of the water. When frozen top up the rest of the way with tap water and off you go.
Desperate to cool off? Wet T-shirt. Sit in front of a fan. This will nuke it, just don't get hypothermia and don't fall asleep like this.
Cold showers are also your friend in summer. Some people get psyched up by these. Personally, I sleep like a baby, so I'm good to have them before bed. Just keep in mind that it takes a bit of time for the cool to circulate, so your body will tell you that you're colder than you actually are. I find that when I have cold showers I need to step out of the spray when I think I'm cold... I'll just wait, and thirty seconds later the temperature has evened out and I actually need to step under again. Rinse and repeat until you maintain coolness even after stepping out for a bit.
If you can't do cold showers, turn the cold shower on anyway and just stick your arms under. When they're cold, lift your arms up above your head. The sensation of cool blood draining into your body is fucking weird and kinda unpleasant but less unpleasant than being hot.
Feet in a tub of water with ice. Blood naturally flows to your extremities when hot, so take advantage of this. If you don't have a tub of ice water, sticking a wet rag on your feet in front of the fan works too, it's the less powerful version of the wet T-shirt.
Drinks lots of water but make sure that water has electrolytes as well. Stay in the shade.
Keep air circulating. Fans don't actually cool rooms down, they just help transfer heat from your body to the moisture on your skin or the air via evaporative cooling.
Block north facing windows early in the morning so the sun doesn't get in. If you're in the northern hemisphere, this is opposite for you. Keep in mind that if your home is brick, the bricks will still heat up and slowly release heat into your home even after the sun goes down so this will only do so much.
If it's hotter inside than outside, close all your windows but two, making sure they're on opposite sides of the house/unit you're in. Point a fan out of one window, making sure that the doors between the rooms with the open windows are all open. This will help create a mini pressure system in your home, pulling cooler air in and pushing the hotter air out via the fan. Bonus points if you can get that fan high up where the hot air rises; even within a single room the top is much hotter than the air by the floor. Adjust the amount of open windows based on how many fans you have, but generally you want more windows with fans open than windows without fans to keep the pressure correct.
Obviously, use your common sense for these. Not everything WILL work for you, just use the stuff that does and adjust what needs to be adjusted. Some of these will be impossible to use in the workplace but others you can still use. Others are best used at home. If humidity impacts your ability to use any of these, get a dehumidifier if that's an option, or use more ice instead of evaporation.
Also keep in mind that the skinnier you are, the faster these will work. More fat means more insulation, means more heat, so you may need to be more patient with some of these or use them in combination.
Bringing this back for my dying mutuals
Let’s say you wanted to glue fabric to wood, but what do you use? What about glass to paper? This to That lets you choose two things you want to glue and lists what types of glue is best. (Because people have a need to glue things to other things!)
This is an incredibly awesome site. Go check it out!
Whhhhaaaaaattt!???
EVERYONE NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS
This is one of the first websites I was told about in props. It also has information about the toxicity, adhere time, price, and other stuff about the glues.
Useful for cosplayers and DIY!

Cyberpunk heist movie where a trans woman's favorite hot swap genitals are stolen and being held hostage, so she has to get together a crew of trans human misfits to recover them. Meanwhile the thieves have locked out her pubic region with a hack through the genitals' wireless ability and are spending the whole time edging her to fuck with her ability to concentrate on retaliation.
Sorry, I meant story not movie. Story I'm going to write about these
One of the characters is a famous cyber hacker who copyrighted his brain and identity, then sold the copyright and specific franchise agreements to his girlfriend before he died. So now there's just this massive industry of solid state assist builds using the mind of one of the greatest hackers to live, literally thousands or millions of copies of this one guy, each version different based on what the buyer does with it. The only way to make an illegal copy is if he agrees you deserve him for free - otherwise he just wilfully erases himself. Unfortunately he's such a common program that at this point most decent hackers know some workarounds or what kind of security needs to go in place to shut out a fresh printing who hasn't learned to update and adapt to more recent security. It's not uncommon for some prints of his to be glorified corporate versions of Windows Defender, and he doesn't give a shit because all he wanted at the end was that his girlfriend would be disgustingly wealthy, which he got.
Other characters. A polycule of nonbinary lovers who had their brains fused together an installed in a single body so they could experience togetherness with greater intensity.
Quantum witch who has figured out how to store her nightmares, intrusive thoughts, and crippling depression into patterns compatible with human neural impulses and can project them in the form of hexes onto other people, or reverse the process to siphon thoughts.
Guy who had his entire digestive tract cybernetically enhanced so it constitutes over 1/3 of his body mass but he can use all his organs as extra limbs or attack with them like a starfish throws its stomach at its prey.
Retired military robot whose brain is a daisy chain of forty rat brains who is still trying to get its personhood legally recognized and resents not being able to do anything for itself without the aid of a "service human" who legally speaking technically owns it as a pet.
Guy who has had his entire skeleton replaced with a network of low level AI centipedes allowing him to react at incredible speeds and move in ways that shouldn't be possible.
House sized anthill which lives underground and interacts through a series of dozens of drones which can temporarily assemble into a humanoid shape if needed.
Orca who had most of her body destroyed by a depth charge during one of many surface wars and had her head and remaining spine installed into a colossal multiarmed mech suit to be able to collect the disability compensation after she sued, and uses it to maintain a coffee bar and support group focused on civilians injured in military or police actions.
Guy who installed entropic conversion units at key joints of his body which allows him to become super fast, hyper intelligent, super strong, and indestructible for ten minutes, but anything within a ten foot sphere around him at the start gets turned to ash.
Human / mosquitos hybrid with a small scale nanoplant mod in their throat. They can treat any injury or illness on themselves or any other organic entity provided they have something healthy and alive to drain the resources from, or are willing to dissolve parts of their own body, which they can regrow later but it's very painful.
The Orca at this point has her lifespan indefinitely extended and mostly has chosen this out of spite but her feelings for government and military aside she is actually quite nice.
Ratbot has a real uphill battle because if it wins personhood the military has to start paying benefits to every functional ratbot and they were created as disposable soldiers with human like intelligence but without any regulations about their rights. As far as the military is concerned they just need to stall until ratbot parts all run out and the one with the lawsuit breaks down permanently. Bad news for ratbots.
The mosquito hybrid is a low income area doctor. Wealthy people can afford nanoplants that run off vat grown synthetic material and have near perfect cell regrowth and life extension. Mosquito hybrid found their nanoplant as a junk discard experimental model and needed a set amount of insect genetic material before it worked.
Fused polycule is named "Portland." I think I'm hilarious.
The Orca's bar is called Morcha Latte
Everyone is hella poor which is why people try to pirate the franchised hacker. The advantage is pirate prints are free by choice and tend towards greater adaptability due to lack of server updates and purposeful separation from their primary wants and needs. However the down side is they cannot be backed up or transfered, and this makes any pirate print hacker functionally a very mortal, vulnerable individual, permanently tied to whatever device he was printed onto initially.
The guy with the skeleton replacement mainly operates as a hacker for hire / ransomeware operator, and the exceptional reaction and flexibility makes him very skilled in these areas, physical fighting is not something he is particularly trained in and he'd rather avoid it. Like most people with mods, a big chunk of his income goes to maintaining the corporate subscription for their use.
Trans woman protag is a mod broker because the total lack of non-subscription based transition led her down the road of getting parts jailbroken or refurbished til she put together this horde of body parts and adaptors and she theseus shipped her original body, sold her own flesh and blood for pennies on the dollar organ transplants. But with all the connections she got during transition she ended up with a stabile income as a corner store chop shop for people who can't afford subscription mods or medical treatment. She finds the parts, one of her contacts does the refurbishment, and another breaks, wipes, or otherwise disables any of the oem software.
I assume anyone reblogging this post this recently wants to read the finished story.

Imagine if astrology was real and astrophysicists realized that instead of building telescopes, you could do observations by just handing out out a ton of surveys. First detection of gravitational waves comes decades earlier in 1997, after a study of 300,000 sagitarius women finds than they break up with their boyfriends 23 minutes earlier than the cosmic baseline would suggest.
In science it's important to resist the natural human impulse to ascribe telos to inanimate things. The things we study simply are; while their interactions may reliably produce certain outcomes, this does not imply that the production of these outcomes is what those things are "for". So, yes, the ray often causes death, but that doesn't make it a "death ray".
