The thing that I found most distressing about this lecture?  The fact that only about nine state in the US require that students learn about the Holocaust in classrooms.  Among those only a few require it as a part of history or social studies classes, the rest require it as part of language arts.  And, the way that students actually learn about this subject is determined at the discretion of the school district, which means that, as long as students meet the general requirements of standardized tests, they don’t have to learn particular details.  So, let that sink in.  Even more distressing?  The states that “require” students to learn about the Holocaust, have only done so since (at the earliest) the 1980s, and far more likely the 1990s and 2000s.  This means that there is an entire generation whose knowledge of the Holocaust comes from popular media and triumphant narratives about US involvement in WWII:  these narratives are hugely false, and what I call the “Punching Hitler” story after the iconic image of Captain America socking Hitler in the jaw.  In the US the general shared narrative about WWII is that the US went over the Europe, lost a lot of boys, but killed Hitler, won the war, and saved the Jews.  o__O  That’s…not what happened.  

The deal appears to have happened largely because of WordPress.com owner Automattic, which acquired Tumblr from Verizon in 2019 and apparently cooperated closely with the CCHR. “I think that was a turning point in the investigation,” says CCHR attorney Alberto Rodriguez. Automattic had revised the original system to add more human oversight even before the settlement. Under its ownership, Tumblr has also attempted to reconcile with LGBTQ users that departed as part of a larger community exodus.

However, you look at Sarah Z and she's out here on Tumblr like "it's a huge red flag to vent to your fans, what did you think would happen 💅". Lady Emily, a co-writer for Sarah Z, is going on twitter like "you know, I learned in film school that if everyone doesn't hang out with someone, it's for good reason."

The reason? Well, Quinton Reviews was socially awkward to Sarah Z and Lindsay Ellis in the DMs in like 2021 and they've just... never let it go?

Quinton is literally a victim here. He's providing a complete timeline of events, he's owning up to the payment stuff, and is showing that this is someone being vindictive because of a rejection. But those two (and Dan Olson hopped on, too) are like "this is your fault, you're a creep for [no reason given]"

If The Editor brought this payment stuff up earlier (she did once before and got paid more immediately!) and not after trying to coerce Quinton into a relationship he wouldn't have any issue paying her. But now, if he was to pay her, it would look like he's being a creep and trying to pay hush money!

Now, I wonder why Quinton would feel like people are looking for ways to call him a creep?

Could it be that in Jan 2021 Sarah Z and Lindsay Ellis basically publicly called him out for being, at worst, awkward in the DMs? (Imgur album link if the tweet doesn't work)

Like... this thing with Sarah Z and Ellis happened in Jan 2021, then in October 2021 this thing with his editor happens. He gets called a sex pest for being awkward in the DMs, he's getting called a sex pest now because he turned down a romantic relationship with an editor... what the hell!

Quinton is a fat man. Fat man are so quickly read as creepy sex pests for just... existing. I've heard so many fat men talk about how they are constantly self-policing everything they do- in every social context- because they don't want to make anyone uncomfortable by being a fat man in their presence. Fat women aren't exempt from this (especially fat women read as masc), but I generally see them presented as more pathetic while fat men are presented as actively predatory. And the editor in question is a thin woman. Sarah Z is a thin woman. Lindsay Ellis is a thin woman. (I don't know Lady Emily's size or race).

I don't think the element of fatphobia & specifically genderist/sexist fatphobia* can be ignored here. I can imagine how stressful it would be to navigate this situation as a fat man, going against a thin woman who has sexually/romantically harassed you, and being quickly presented as a creep by other thin women.

Sarah Z likewise put someone on TikTok on blast for "anti-intellectualism" and completely smeared her and refuses to both apologize or even acknowledge what she's done. I never see that creator anymore and she was someone that went into the "cringe" sides of fandom and explained it for people. Sarah blasted her apart over her saying that it was easier for her to read fanfic because it was just more accessible to her. That was her crime.
