thing I am proud of: when the doctor started going on a weird rant about long covid not being real I paused and listened to his nonsense for a bit and then very calmly said, in a polite and curious tone, "you don't believe in post-viral illness?" and he like. stammered a bunch and was like OH WELL I'M NOT SAYING -- I DON'T...I just think ..! and backpedaled awkwardly while I just sat there like :3c interesting :3c thank you so much for clarifying your stance on this :3c
an important skill for chronically ill people to develop is the ability to treat the doctor as though they are simply a person you are interviewing to find out how much they know about your condition.
Holy shit op this is LITERALLY in the book 'Never Split The Difference: Negotiating as if Your Life Depends On It'. Written by a guy who did hostage negotiation and then tried doing business negotiation, and mopped the floor with industry experts.
I'm fortunate enough to have a primary care doctor who knows about hEDS, but it's occurring to me that the skills in this book could be medically life changing for chronically ill folks of all kinds. Like. Literally a matter of life and death, especially for BIPOC and/or fat and/or young people who are having their issues dismissed.
HMMM interesting!! will have to check this out
Love this book, it's a great primer on skills that aren't taught but are absolutely life changing in small ways, but they add up. It's like haggling but for all social situations. The mirroring methods in negotiation tactics helped me a lot with getting information out of abusive family members. It's also just good advice in general for social situations that need easing. A lot of examples in the book and what OP is doing here help soften situations that would otherwise be abrasive both for yourself and others. It's usually about empathy and de-escalation.
Iirc generally, the advice in this book adheres to the thought that we're social and emotional creatures. No one is rlly gonna respond to cold hard facts, nor are they gonna care much about your hard limits or offense. Some ppl want to offend, some want to prove things or are desperate for approval.
You can deal with it like op did by asking for clarification. Ppl backpedal hard when u want them to explain a stupid and reactionary thing they did! You can also mirror the last thing they said or address the elephant in the room as it were: "You think x will happen if we implement y." These are just a few methods out of the book, and they can work. It just takes time and practice, as well as understanding why they work and to what end.
Also @nightmare-from-heaven nice to see another person who's read this book! Genuinely one of my favorite non-fiction eye-openers.
Yes! You state it so well @sucrosesorcery â how to ease situations that might otherwise be abrasive, is a huge percent of it. The book was recommended to me by @the-sacred-now as a primer for autists on 'how to human behaviour', and I think I agree.
Colonialist science sold the idea that humans are logical creatures, but any autist can tell you that is absolutely not the case. Practicing the forms from this book can help bridge that behavioural and emotional gap.
Fun how the bystander effect was coined to cover up how cops are bigoted cowards who let a queer person die and stockholm syndrome was coined to cover that the cops handled a hostage situation so badly the hostages trusted their captors more than the cops.

reading a negative review of something you love written by a person who very clearly didnât understand it at all

Man I miss free the nipple. Its getting warmer and we donât even have free the nipple anymore
feminism has backslid so hard in recent years people don't even know what free the nipple means anymore
For those unaware, "free the nipple" means that women should be able to walk around without a shirt on, just like men are. The fact that womens chests are sexualized like they are, meaning those who are assumed to be women have to wear shirts, even in this weather, is fucking ridiculous. "Free the nipple" was referencing 1, the freedom to go shirtless, and 2, the fact that it's always "female-presenting nipples" that are punished.
Is it really possible for an atheist boy and a Gnostic girl to be in a relationship?
iâm a demonalator (theistic satanist in simple terms ig) and my bf is a baptist christian. based on that information, id say so, yeah
How does that work? Like you literally worship demons and he believes that demons are evil and should not be worshipped as per the Bible.
How do you two reconcile that difference?
Love before belief, simple. Iâm religious but Iâd never put a book before the human living right in front of me, no matter how much I respect my gods.
Ok but like if you believe that someone is going to Hell if they're not Christian, how can you logically just ignore that and love them? Can you really truly love someone of a differing belief if you think they're gonna burn forever for continuing to be themselves?
Might sound cringe but yeah. I mean I guess it depends from person to person- not to mention, there are MANY branches of Christianity. most Catholics Iâve met stick to dating within Catholic Churches, or no dating until marriage. Methodists are a lot more friendly, donât give AS much of a damn, are more like âeh you didnât murder anyone so god still loves you :)â
Some people adjust their own beliefs, others find a happy middle, others break up. Religion is a construct, a coping mechanism, and a way that some are raised. An imaginary rule book
âI change my clothes my hair my faithâ - sleeping with sirens
Sure there are many branches of Christianity, I know that all too well given my interest in Gnosticism and Christian history. That being said, I'm not aware of any modern branch that doesn't believe in eternal Hell.
Honestly it's none of my buisness, it's not my relationship so my opinion and understanding means jack squat.
I just don't understand as an ex-Christian how one could date anyone that they don't think is gonna be with them in heaven. But hey, that's not my cross to bear (so to speak).
Iâm an ex-Christian myself who continues to go to a Methodist summer camp years after leaving the Church (not sure what branch I was as a kid, I was just raised that way) and idk it just never comes up there I suppose? In my understanding youâd only go to hell if you commit one of the seven deadly sins (an excessive amount of one) but I guess I could be wrong? I mean if weâre following common logic I donât think a majority of Christians are going to heaven by their own standards, so maybe theyâll see them in the eternal hell đ
Any sin without being forgiven by Jesus and not being Christian is enough to put you in hell, as per my understanding growing up and having read the Bible.
One lie, one assault, one whatever.
This belief in eternal hell is very much an American Christianity thing (and not even a Christian thing, more an ex-Christian, "this is what you should believe" thing). Most Christians I know don't think too deeply about it, and are very focussed on the live part - what happens after you die is a mystery. So there's no real conflict if "how you treat others" aligns.
