Whoās your favorite character from Piano Man?
The old man sitting next to me making love to a bottle of gin
John at the bar, a friend of mine, who gets me my drinks for free
Paul, the real estate novelist, who never had time for a wife
Davy, whoās still in the Navy, and probably will be for life
The waitress practicing politics
The businessmen slowly getting stoned
The manager who gives me a smile
Me, who theyāve been coming to see, to forget about life for a while
The piano (it sounds like a carnival). The microphone (it smells like beer)
Ones who sit at the bar and put bread in my jar and say man what r u doin here?
Please reblog if you donāt mind

See the Universe in a New Way with the Webb Space Telescope's First Images
Are you ready to see unprecedented, detailed views of the universe from the James Webb Space Telescope, the largest and most powerful space observatory ever made? Scroll down to see the first full-color images and data from Webb. Unfold the universe with us.Ā āØ
Carina Nebula
This landscape of āmountainsā and āvalleysā speckled with glittering stars, called the Cosmic Cliffs, is the edge of the star-birthing Carina Nebula. Usually, the early phases of star formation are difficult to capture, but Webb can peer through cosmic dustāthanks to its extreme sensitivity, spatial resolution, and imaging capability. Protostellar jets clearly shoot out from some of these young stars in this new image.
Southern Ring Nebula
The Southern Ring Nebula is a planetary nebula: itās an expanding cloud of gas and dust surrounding a dying star. In this new image, the nebulaās second, dimmer star is brought into full view, as well as the gas and dust itās throwing out around it. (The brighter star is in its own stage of stellar evolution and will probably eject its own planetary nebula in the future.) These kinds of details will help us better understand how stars evolve and transform their environments. Finally, you might notice points of light in the background. Those arenāt starsātheyāre distant galaxies.
Stephanās Quintet
Stephanās Quintet, a visual grouping of five galaxies near each other, was discovered in 1877 and is best known for being prominently featured in the holiday classic, āItās a Wonderful Life.ā This new image brings the galaxy group from the silver screen to your screen in an enormous mosaic that is Webbās largest image to date. The mosaic covers about one-fifth of the Moonās diameter; it contains over 150 million pixels and is constructed from almost 1,000 separate image files. Never-before-seen details are on display: sparkling clusters of millions of young stars, fresh star births, sweeping tails of gas, dust and stars, and huge shock waves paint a dramatic picture of galactic interactions.
WASP-96 b
WASP-96 b is a giant, mostly gas planet outside our solar system, discovered in 2014. Webbās Near-Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph (NIRISS) measured light from the WASP-96 system as the planet moved across the star. The light curve confirmed previous observations, but the transmission spectrum revealed new properties of the planet: an unambiguous signature of water, indications of haze, and evidence of clouds in the atmosphere. This discovery marks a giant leap forward in the quest to find potentially habitable planets beyond Earth.
Webb's First Deep Field
This image of galaxy cluster SMACS 0723, known as Webbās First Deep Field, looks 4.6 billion years into the past. Looking at infrared wavelengths beyond Hubbleās deepest fields, Webbās sharp near-infrared view reveals thousands of galaxiesāincluding the faintest objects ever observed in the infraredāin the most detailed view of the early universe to date. We can now see tiny, faint structures weāve never seen before, like star clusters and diffuse features and soon, weāll begin to learn more about the galaxiesā masses, ages, histories, and compositions.
These images and data are just the beginning of what the observatory will find. It will study every phase in the history of our Universe, ranging from the first luminous glows after the Big Bang, to the formation of solar systems capable of supporting life on planets like Earth, to the evolution of our own Solar System.

Watching the bitter pitiful downfall of Neil DeGrasse Tyson has been fascinating. These days he's known primarily for being a pretentious and smug wet blanket, but there was a bit when the public loved him! He wanted to take on the mantle of Carl Sagan, he was gonna be the new generation of science education and he was a black man whose Cosmos series highlighted the scientific contributions of women and men of color! He rapped about how we know the earth is round and it was a self aware nerd moment that was being shared all over the internet!
And something happened?? The accusation of sexual abuse didn't seem to get much traction so I don't pin the downfall on that moment as the catalyst. There were some rumors that he was an ass so it was probably already there. He made some buzz-kill tweets that got push back but holy shit he's just gone into this bitter Rationalist Brain Rot and I would love to just find the dude and ask what the fuck happened to him in general. What is his damage??
Lunar eclipses happen all the time they're not special. The universe doesn't care about you. This is statistically nothing.
What the fuck are you doing Neil??? Do you think killing wonder and telling people their excitement for natural phenomena is carrying on the legacy of your supposed hero Carl Sagan?? You should be excited when the public is excited for science! Sure lunar eclipses are common but why is commonality something not worth celebrating! Tell people how to notice when it happens so they can join the excitement! Why the fuck do you think being a smug condescending killer of awe is what it means to share science?? The fuck is wrong with you dude??
The awesome thing about science is it gives wonder to apparently common things!! It makes the whole universe fascinating and complex! The worst misconception about scientists is they take the wonder and awe from the world and then you got this smug dipshit saying he's the new Carl Sagan feeding right into that misconception???
did y'all know that child-resistant packaging actually has to be tested on children like they literally go to a daycare and ask a bunch of kids to open medication packages and if they can the company has to go back and redo their packaging from scratch
This is actually hilarious though
āthey may use their teethā is somehow the funniest motherfucking part
Same goes for bear-proof containers! The Wolf & Grizzly Discovery Center in West Yellowstone has demonstrations. I wonder if they are also specifically told they can use their teeth
Stop whatever you are doing and spend 2 minutes watching bears who work as professional product testers.Ā

im sorry i just found out that all steel made post-ww2 has like subtly higher levels of radioactivityā¦.. bc the nuclear bombs increased the background radiation in the air slightly all across the world and so atmospheric air used in the production of steel contaminates itā¦.. and itās completely negligible in everyday life and not at all dangerous (really, truly do not worry about it) but apparently it also means that whenever we need Special No Radiation Steel (like for scientific/medical equipment, ex. geiger counters or xray machines) we have to use scavenged steel made before ww2. and apparently shipwrecks are a great source of such steel. so a lot of such equipment is made from recycled shipwreck metal. what the fuck. what the fuck
for anyone who like me was worried we will one day run out of shipwreck steel: thankfully the background radiation levels in the atmosphere have been dropping ever since nuclear testing was moved underground, so this will become less and less of an issue with time. and now for another radioactive metal from shipwrecks fan fact:
apparently lead is really good for radiation shielding, which is why itās important to many physics experiments, especially those concerned with studying dark matter and rare particles. unfortunately, lead is also inherently A Little Bit Radioactive (unrelated to nuclear bombs, itās just a feature of the metal), but the radioactive element decays over time, so the older the lead, the less radioactive, and hence better for Physics Stuff. which is why ancient Roman lead is Ideal for this. so a lot of ancient bars of lead from Roman shipwrecks - tons of cargo that wouldāve ended up as weapons or coins and stuff, if it didnāt sick to the bottom of the sea - are sold to physicists. itās like a whole āpreservation of cultural heritage vs revolutionary scientific researchā thing. like a whole fucking feud btwn the archaeologists and physicists
reblogging to remind myself to try and find a source
okay so low-background steel is/was a thing but we donāt need it anymore, but it definitely was necessary for awhile! the wiki article mentions using steel from āscuttledā ships which is not quite as cool as shipwrecks (no ghosts) but IS a ship that has sunk to the ocean floor so like. whoās counting
the roman shipwreck lead thing is just 100% accurate tho!
( @souldagger i do not mean to impugn you, i too have made excited posts without sourcing, i just wanted to verify <3)

You know, thinking about it, I imagine the Leverage crew are pretty philanthropic. Parker might have had to be introduced to the concept (āYou just give them money and they go away with it? How does that work?ā) but probably once she got her head around it sheād be into it.Ā
What gets me is how god damned frustrating it would be to work somewhere that one of the Leverage crew supports. Nate would be okay, heād just make small monthly gifts to ten million different organizations so that nobody thinks heās worth very much (he doesnāt own his home and he gives such small amounts monthly that Development writes him off as an earnest but low-capacity donor who should get a thank-you card around the holidays). Itās probably a bigger inconvenience to him because heās on every nonprofit mailing list known to man. He has so many address labels, guys. (I donāt want to be Nate but I am Nate. I have so many address labels.)
Sophie I imagine has an extravagant alias for every charity she supports; she gives outrageous amounts and in return demands only attention and adulation, tickets to all the galas, and to be in at least one photo in every annual report. We have a donor like this ā sheās genuinely invested in our work, gives generously of her time and money, is never rude or demanding, but if sheās in the room all eyes must be on her at all times. I actually really like her but constant exposure could getā¦tiring.Ā
Eliot just sends enormous, anonymous checks once a year through a shell company or DAF, which while not unusual would be irritating in that they canāt ever reach out to thank him and/or steward him into a larger gift appealing to his interests. They canāt even send him dumb swag! He deserves a charity-branded bottle opener and keychain flashlight! (He has stolen all of Nateās, but they donāt know that.) Still, theyāve probably got a fun nickname for him; I have a few people in my research files who are simply named after characters from Greek mythology because thatās all the data I have or am allowed to store.Ā
For a long time Hardison just dumped money into the bank accounts of his charities of choice, seamlessly, invisibly ā it just APPEARED in the account, and he was cool with that until he checked back after a few years and found none of his money was being used because they couldnāt figure out where it was coming from and were worried it was a clerical error despite the bank assuring them otherwise. Now he still dumps money into the accounts but he entertains himself building an elaborate digital paper trail so that the accounting all works. Have you ever watched a Gift Processing office try to balance a nonprofitās books? Sometimes they cry! Donāt be mean to them, Hardison.Ā
Parker, bless her heart, just leaves bags of money on the doorsteps of random employees with notes directing how, in general terms, it should be spent. If sheās particularly pleased with the climbability of their home, she leaves a donut for them, too. Generally if she mentions sheās done this to the crew, Eliot calls up the charity to assure them that the large bag of cash was a legitimate donation and is not some kind of money-laundering scam. (That was ONE TIME Eliot, and the IRS didnāt even NOTICE.) This happened to me once. A tiny old lady in a Cubs jacket showed up to our office with a backpack full of money and it was a very intense morning.Ā
Anyway, what Iām saying is that every year, across the span of roughly two weeks, Hardisonās Nanaās church gets their regular $25 check from that nice Mr. Ford, a visit from the very devout but slightly weird Madam Sofia who wants a private choir recital, an enormous check from a bank in the Bahamas with no name attached, a large direct deposit from a heretofore-undiscovered bond the church invested in a decade ago, and a large bag of cash with a dozen donuts on it and a note reading THANK YOU FOR THE NEW ROOF IT WAS VERY SLIPPERY AND FUN. PLEASE BUY STUFFED ANIMALS FOR CHILDREN WHO NEED STUFFED ANIMALS.Ā

This line always cracks me up:
Kel's morning clothes--shirt, canvas breeches, stockings, boots, a canvas jacket--were draped neatly over a stand Kel had always thought was a hurdle put in her room by mistake.
