This flashback in ATLA, Azulon becoming enraged with Ozai for disrespecting Iroh and the recently deceased Lu Ten, is usually interpreted as Azulon then ordering Ozai to kill Zuko. I disagree with this for two reasons. 1: We donât actually hear Azulon say that, itâs only referred to by Azula (who was around seven or eight at the time and might have misunderstood what she heard) and by Ozai, years later, when he is taunting Zuko on the Day of Black Sun. Neither Azula nor Ozai are reliable narrators. 2: Azulon is, at the time of this flashback, the ruler of the Fire Nation who has just lost one of his only two grandsons and heirs. What kind of monarch loses one heir and then turns around and demands the death of another, especially when losing Zuko would hardly bother Ozai? My interpretation of this situation is Azulon ordered Ozai to give Zuko into Irohâs care, replacing Lu Ten as Irohâs heir, neatly removing any argument Ozai had about Irohâs line having ended. Ozai of course would never accept this. He either lied to Ursa, claiming Azulon wished Zuko dead, or outright told his wife heâd kill Zuko before seeing him get ahead of him in the line of succession, thus manipulating Ursa to help him assassinate Azulon. I think this theory makes far more logical sense than âAzulon ordered the murder of his nine-year-old grandsonâ.
Oh, I like this. I like this lots.
gosh but like we spent hundreds of years looking up at the stars and wondering âis there anybody out thereâ and hoping and guessing and imagining
because we as a species were so lonely and we wanted friends so bad, we wanted to meet other species and we wanted to talk to them and we wanted to learn from them and to stop being the only people in the universe
and we started realizing that things were maybe not going so good for usâ we got scared that we were going to blow each other up, we got scared that we were going to break our planet permanently, we got scared that in a hundred years we were all going to be dead and gone and even if there were other people out there, weâd never get to meet them
and then
we built robots?
and we gave them names and we gave them brains made out of silicon and we pretended they were people and we told them hey you wanna go exploring, and of course they did, because we had made them in our own image
and maybe in a hundred years we wonât be around any more, maybe yeah the planet will be a mess and weâll all be dead, and if other people come from the stars we wonât be around to meet them and say hi! how are you! weâre people, too! youâre not alone any more!, maybe weâll be gone
but we built robots, who have beat-up hulls and metal brains, and who have names; and if the other people come and say, who were these people? what were they like?
the robots can say, when they made us, they called us discovery; they called us curiosity; they called us explorer; they called us spirit. they must have thought that was important.
and they told us to tell you hello.
So a lot of people think cut/fresh flowers are really expensive or decadent, and that itâs not worth buying them when theyâre at a reduced price because theyâll die within about a day and itâs still Too Expensive and like I just. I need to let you know that it isnât true and unless itâs a super special occasion and youâre going to an actual florist for an actual special bouquet you donât have to, nay shouldnât, pay full price for flowers ever. I mean I can only really speak for the UK where you can get flowers in the grocery store which is naturally cheaper than a florist, and also where I always get mine, but the techniques apply to âanywhere one can obtain a bunch of flowersâ If you take care of your cut flowers - which donât worry isnât hard - the slightly sad looking slightly wilty half price ones will STILL last you two weeks. Observe:
Everything in that vase except the dark red flowers and the ivory roses was purchased, half wilted, in the reduced bucket an ENTIRE WEEK ago. The dark reds and ivories? TWO WEEKSÂ (I donât normally premade bouquets because they end up in the reduced less often and even when they do theyâre still more expensive than getting a few bunches of different types of flowers) TWO. WEEKS. From a wilted half price âwe are become deathâ state. Hereâs what it looked like a whole entire week ago when I put the new flowers in:
(the big yellow bastard in the bottom left is also from the previous week) I mean theyâve still âhardly wiltedâ now and if I was so inclined I could leave it another couple of days, but this is normally the point at which I remove them and put new flowers in the gaps. Also, cut off the heads and keep them for a bath. Youâll feel So Fucking Fancy and it cost you nothing. So how do you revive sad looking cut flowers, cheat the system, and have a permanent display of vibrant colourful BUT ULTIMATELY CHEAP AS SHIT flowers in your home? 1. Remove the leaves. You can remove all of them if you like but the most important thing is removing leaves along the length of the stem which will be in water. If leaves are submerged they will begin to rot and just kill everything. You can keep the ones that poke out above the vase for bulk and Oooh Pretty Green if you want, or not. 2. Trim the stems with SHARP and CLEAN (preferably steralised by dunking in some boiling water) scissors or a SHARP and CLEAN knife. Do so at an angle. Chances are you need to shorten the stems so they fit in your vase properly anyway, but doing this allows for better uptake of water and nutrients. 3. Use a CLEAN container. If thereâs a bit of grossness hanging around from previous flowers, scrub that shit out. 4. Give them cool water. I live in an area with very soft water so I donât have to do anything, but if you donât then either filtering it or letting it stand for a few hours first will help. 5. Use flower feed! Most bunches, at least over here, come with a wee sachet of flower food. If you DONâT get a sachet of feed you can MAKE YOUR OWN. Itâs super easy. You need 2 tablespoons of lemon juice, 1 tablespoon of regular white sugar and half a teaspoon of bleach (yes really) per 1 litre (quart) of water. You wonât need a whole litre, obviously, but you can keep it in the cupboard in a bottle or just scale down the recipe. Put a teaspoon (or two if you have a big pitcher style vase) in your water. Different flower types optimally need different levels of sugar and you can totally look up what that ratio is if you only have one kind (like all roses or something) but 1 tablespoon: 1 litre works well enough. Now that your flowers are back to life, you can keep them looking good for a decent long while 1. Remove dead/wilted heads either as and when you see them or just like once a week (Iâm lazy, I just do it once a week) 2. Remove any leaves that are going the same way 3. Once a week, change out the water. Fish out any plant material that may have fallen in, rinse the container, put in new water and feed. 4. When youâre doing the water change, give the stems another small trim. Only 1cm (half an inch) or so, unless the bottom of the stem is going pale and a bit limp looking, in which case lop off as much of that part as you can whilst still being able to fit them in the vase properly. If they end up noticably shorter than the others, just keep those ones to the outside of the arrangement OR put them in the middle and use the other flowers to keep them propped up within the water so they appear the same height. 5. Replace removed dead flowers with ones from your next cut-price bunch. That way youâre a) keeping a perpetual but ever-changing bouquet and b) need to buy less flowers at once than just waiting for everything to die off and replacing the whole thing. Cut flowers make me happy. Iâm sure having a nice beautiful bunch of colourful flowers in your room makes you happy too, and you absolutely donât need to spend a fortune to make that happen.
Canât believe this has over 1000 notes anyway hereâs my current âdyingâ flowers

things I wish Iâd known when I started writing fic on ao3
use & for friendships, colleagues, familial relationships and use / for romantic or sexual relationships (or encounters)
not everyone reads fic. Lots of people use screen readers, and screen readers canât see whatâs on images. use descriptive text to help them out.
lots of people download fic to read on other devices, not all downloads capture images too.
thereâs a big difference between No Archive Warnings Apply (NAWA) and Author Chose Not to Use Archive Warnings (CNTW). NAWA means that thereâs nothing in the fic that needs to be warned for using the official Archive Warning system. CNTW means there might be something that requires a warning and the author is either avoiding giving out spoilers or they are unsure how to interpret their plot point with respect to the official Warnings. (in both cases, additional tags are where itâs at - you can explain yourself there)Â
the reason why the number of bookmarks in the fic is different from the number of bookmarks on your stats page is because your stats page number includes bookmarks that are hidden
thereâs a preference setting where you can receive emails with your own comments/replies.
thereâs a site skin that hides stats so you donât have to see them
writing in rich text format makes my life easier
knowing html allows me to do fun things in the comments section like comment/reply with reaction gifs
knowing html also allows me to do interesting formatting in my fics that I canât do with rich text alone
those little blue bubbles with the question marks in them will answer my questions a lot of the time - and also teach me something new
the FAQ is linked under the word About in the header
if you write your fic in the draft window, you might end up losing it so make sure you copy the text before you hit Post, just in case
they arenât kidding when they say drafts are deleted after 30 days
Hereâs some additions.
The Anonymous collection will allow you to post anything you want and retain ownership over it.
Your identifying information will not be anywhere within the fic to any other reader. Though you will see it from your end when looking at it as a logged in user.
When you reply to a comment, it will anonymize you, so feel free to respond to your commenters!
You can take your fic off Anonymous at any time
When you are signed into AO3, you can easily access your Anonymous fics by looking at the âWorks In Collectionsâ tab on your page. Nobody else will see these Anonymous works on this page.
Works can be added to the Anonymous collection at any time
Just because a fic is Anonymous does not mean it is Abandoned or Orphaned.
Speaking of Orphaned fics:
If you have posted a story and for whatever reason you no longer want it on your account or associated with you, you can Orphan the fic.
Orphaning fics will remove all of your control and ownership of the story.
Orphaning fics is not a reversible process. Once a fic has been Orphaned it cannot be taken back. You cannot delete it. You canât check stats and it does not show up on your Works page anymore.
Orphaning and the Anonymous collection are great options for when you no longer want a fic associated with you, but you donât want to delete it either.
Also: dark mode skins are great! I use Reversi on this page and itâs much easier on the eyes than the white background. Hereâs how to use skins.
Also also: how to use html om AO3.
Donât know if someone else has already said this in the notes but unless your bookmark is private the author can look and see what tags or additional notes youâve put on the bookmark (I like to check them to see if anyone has :D). Also, yes, you can add your own tags to bookmarks and make different lists to organize them! You can comment on fics anonymously (though I think you have to log out to do so as of now, really wish it was an option while signed in but still great itâs even an option at all!) You can save new chapters on fics as a draft (without the 30 day limit if I remember). I do this a lot. There is separate sections for both beginning and ending authorâs notes (you can use both on the same chapter or one shot) and using the authorâs note doesnât include your rambling as part of the word count. Which is nice as it doesnât artificially inflate the numbers.
On site skins:
You can combine existing skins by creating you own skin scroll to the bottom under ADVANCED and then Parent Skins. Example, i use AO3s Reversi and then XParrots Shortening Long Tag Field
Also, you can exclude stories in this area too! I got this from another tumblr post so i canât take credit for it, nor do i know how to expand it to other things like tags or pairing or author.
.blurb#work_430075 { display: none; }
Just replace the numbers with the work you dont want to see anymore.
Just a few points to add that I hadnât seen listed above:
-In addition to beginning and ending authorâs notes for the overall story, there are also beginning and ending authorâs notes for each chapter of a multipart story. When you first create the story, before you add additional chapters, it will treat your authorâs notes as overall story notes â meaning your âso thatâs chapter 1!â note will be kicked to the end of every subsequent chapter unless you move it to chapter 1 specifically.
-There is, in fact, a character limit in the authorâs notes. Iâve run up against it a few times.

how does being punched in the face feel like
literally i just wanna know
It depends on where you get hit
Cheek: a round dull pain that clocks your entire head in a different direction. Itâs painful and throbs but the main effect of a punch to the cheek is how jarring it is. You feel it in your mouth, your teeth. And no matter how you position that punch the knuckles will always hit the jaw and cheek bones adding a frame of sharp pain in which the redness will be painted.
Temple: getting hit on the temple pushes your head to the side rather than turning it. Itâs disorienting because it leaves you very off balance. It essentially feels like a bad pressure headache, like when you have a sinus infection on a plane, but in one spot and on the outside. Itâs sharp in the middle and radiates outward and even after the initial impact it pulses like an earthquake epicenter. It easily causes long lasting headaches and is the most likely of these examples to cause a concussion.
Eye: this is a weird one. The fist doesnât fit within the eye socket so either the knuckles on the brow and cheeks bones protect the actual eye or they donât. The former option gives a full spreading pain below the eye which results in the classic black eye look and a sharp pain on your brow similar to hitting your shin on the couch. The latter option, well bad things can happen when a hard fast object makes direct contact with your eye but for the sake of this it feels like a vacuum bc the concave shape is being covered and pressurized. The eye feels pushed back and pulled forward all at once. It doesnât necessarily hurt that bad for that long unless the punch was meant to do damage. Iâm fortunate to say I donât know what it would feel like then.
Nose: remember that prank kids used to pull where theyâd line up their hands with their nose, push them in one direction and crack a knuckle at the same time to pretend to break their nose? Yeah thatâs what it looks like when someone punches you from the side in the nose, except itâs someone elseâs hand and your nose makes the sound instead of their knuckle. Itâs just like breaking any bone where you hear it and feel the action if it being done but that moment of shock blankets you for a split second until all the pain comes rushing back. Itâs sharp and needlelike and can give you black eyes just to add insult to injury. If you get hit in the nose from the front itâs like the uncomfortableness of when you have to sneeze but canât. Except that feeling took all the steroids and is now using your face as a punching bag to express its roid rage. It crackles outward like static electricity under your skin, your eyesight gets fuzzy and you canât tell if itâs because youâre tearing up, itâs hard to open your eyes, or youâre momentarily stunned and blinded. Just know itâs all three. I find that this one knocks the wind out of you the most. Gotta remind yourself to breathe just donât try to do it through your nose.
If you really want to know what this feels like Iâd suggest joining a mixed martial arts because theyâll teach you correct form and power distribution and you can spar with pads and actually hit each other.
Iâd also recommend learning what it feels like to punch someone in the face. Itâs much more fun and pretty damn cathartic when they deserve it.
i was just being stupid but these descriptions are actually so well written i could feel them lmao bless
Well, thanks for âbeing stupid,â because this is a great ref for writers.
*likes to save it to their gallery of assorted writing refs
Also, if youâve never been deliberately hit in the face before thereâs a surprisingly overwhelming feeling of a social violation having happened - a sense of shock and wrongness. I burst into completely involuntary tears even though the punch wasnât particularly painful.
me explaining to the other trainers that apricorns are unknown outside of Johto because of deliberate suppression by the Silph and Devon corporations to present artificial pokeballs as the only means of capturing pokemon and establish regional monopolies after they eliminate renewable sources
(via @itsbenedict)
eternalfarnham replied to your post
youâre in the pocket of Big Ball, I see
thereâs no pocket for me to BE in, thereâs no LOBBYING involved, thereâs no SUPPRESSION campaign because you donât need one! traditional methods suppress themselves when you make modern pokĂ©balls available. you might as well start accusing AT&T of deliberately suppressing the noble traditional art form of the goddamn semaphore.
not to mention OP demonstrates a total lack of understanding of the market realities of the pokĂ©ball industry- Silph and Devon are not monopolies, if they werenât in constant competition their magic monster domination spheres wouldnât cost two bucks a pop. the ball spec is a public standard, and Bill Masakiâs storage system based on that standard is an open-source project. theyâre only the two largest players because theyâre able to leverage economies of scale. you still get smaller operations like the Laverre City PokĂ© Ball Factory, with better regional supply chains and local brand recognition, making room for themselves in the market.Â
sm FUCKING h at yâall granola-crunching conspiracy theorists. you probably also believe Super Potions cause autism.
Ok, but it is a shame that artisanal balls are basically off the market now. Like, you have to ride the monorail and hike through a half dozen routes just to find someone willing to sell you a Fast Ball. Believe me, when your boss at the power plant needs five Electrodes by Tuesday you are not going to want to make the trip to Alola; youâre going to head on down to the Mart and get some Ultra Balls, which will do the trick but arenât well tailored to the job.
Iâm with you that modern catching techniques are better, not to mention more humane, but there genuinely is a loss from more niche balls becoming harder to find. Maybe someday the long slowpoketail of consumer demand will be met, but I wouldnât hold my breath for that Shellder.
look yâall are missing the point. mass production of silph balls crowding out traditional apricorn craftsmanship is, if anything, more a side effect of the real problem: that capture artifacts are too easy to get your hands on these days. $2 basic balls are a problem. before modern ball tech you had to go to an artisan, yes, but part of their job was to care about who had the power to recruit pokĂ©mon from the wild, as a backstop against another Knight of Veilstone coming along. there was a time when youâd never lay a hand on a ball yourself until it was clear you respected pokĂ©mon, whether tame or in the wild. but now, a âpokĂ©mon journeyâ is open to practically every teenager, even if theyâve got not interest in treating their team with trust and love.
the worldwide rise in the last century of organized crime and apocalyptic cults who use pokĂ©mon as their muscle is a direct result of capture artifacts becoming a mass produced market commodity rather than a mechanism for preserving the sacred trust between humans and the wilderness. itâs a miracle that the powder keg hasnât already gone off by now.
Oh that is rank historical revisionism - what, do you think artisansâ definitions of ârespectâ were constructed in a vacuum? We already had rhetoric as far back as the warring states period in Ransei about how only the soldierly classes, overwhelmingly descendants of nobility and taught from birth, had the intangible qualities necessary to âbondâ with PokĂ©mon. And when we start seeing apricorn balls develop in Johto, which borders Kanto - Kanto, where we know thereâs been extensive cultural cross-contamination with Auroran and Dragnoran expeditions - surprise, suddenly only a small population has the intangible qualities necessary to use them, too.
That notion was, and remains, a tool to limit general access to PokĂ©mon in the interest of maintaining class disparities. I mean, have we already forgotten the Aether Foundationâs pseudo-conservationist nonsense? Their attempt to manipulate natural resources and establish a power base in Alola, while they were modernizing and taking their place on the world stage, was founded on this exact rhetoric of ârescuingâ PokĂ©mon from local disenfranchised populations, as if taking PokĂ©mon away from places like Po Town would improve things instead of increasing competition between trainers and decreasing safety.
Do you want more disillusioned kids joining gangs? Because thatâs how you get Teams!
Artisanal balls and anyone who supports them are tools of the aristocracy to suppress the common folk. In the days when a ball could only be made by hand by an expert, only the wealthiest could afford pokemon, and as a result anyone not born into the âelitesâ was forced to be subservient to their âbettersâ for protection.
The release of the $2 pokeball meant that the balance of power shifted to the common citizens. If any child can wield the power of a god, the military and the government and the wealthiest businessmen have no power over them.
More than that, instead of power being determined by the wealth to acquire pokemon, power comes exclusively from the dedication, effort, and empathy required to train them to high levels and to maintain their loyalty. If a person simply buys their pokemon, then those pokemon will either stay at low levels forever, or refuse to obey the human because there is no respect between them; the most powerful people in the world are those who caught a critter at level 2-5 and then devoted their life to raising it into a world power.
And as a beautiful side benefit of this, standard of living has increased across the board. Since every household has at least one minor pokemon in the family and there are increasing numbers of professional, working pokemon joining cities and other civilized areas and working to improve them, every aspect of economy and industry has been enhanced by their supernatural capabilities. Electricity is generated cleanly and in abundance for everybody. Pollution is cleaned up almost completely and instantly. The production of farms, mines, and workshops is multiplied, even as safety standards improve. Yes, every few years another potential apocalypse comes about and needs to be prevented by a couple of brave teenagers, but outside of those incidents the world is damn close to utopia.
âŠthat was all fascinating to read and I would like to see more like it, please
for instance; what the hell is in lemonade that makes it a more powerful healing alternative to regular potions
