One time I came home from uni very upset and my younger siblings asked what's wrong. I said that mutated flies in our lab escaped because someone broke their jar. I didn't even realise how scary it sounded to them until I saw their faces lmao. I was upset because we were short on said flies (they don't reproduce very well) and my siblings thought that some crazy radioactive fly monsters escaped and we are all fucked now. Love being a mad scientist in their eyes lowkey
video ive been thinking about for days
“All of us don’t have the same eyes” is my key takeaway here. This is 100 percent correct.

Translation by me. :))
“Even a slightly increased possibility of summoning rain is still an ability to summon rain” is such a good point

getting lost in boston is fun because I turned around on a street corner three times and some guy yelled "hey stupid! the bus is that way!" very helpful interaction and accurate insult, 10/10 no notes
one time I walked around a building a couple times looking for a bathroom and this guy went "this bitch thinks she's on a merrygoround, where the fuck are you tryna go? bathroom? one floor down to the right behind the door that says bathroom."
My very first time in Boston. I was absolutely miserable, trying to drag my giant suitcase up a lengthy set of stairs in the pouring rain. This guy who had already reached the top looked back at me with the most pure expression of disgust I’ve ever seen in anyone’s eyes, marched back down the stairs, grabbed my suitcase, carried it to the top, left it there for me, and walked away without ever saying a word. I think about him often.
For the people in the notes going "why is Boston like this": a) the insults are a way to show you have no ulterior motives when helping someone (and don't need to be thanked or repaid), and b) Boston was settled by the Irish
also the Italians. mixing Irish and Italian sociocultural attitudes had the effect of multiplying the Sass Levels by the power of infinity, in the sense that you get all of the clever dry wit of the Irish and all of the bitchy gossipy condensation of the Italians rolled into one very stereotypically overly-friendly American package.
also worth noting that who you are to them doesn’t matter. they’ll talk to strangers like that and will also talk to their best friends like that. they’re just Like That.
More from the notes:
I feel like the main reason I never got into superhero comics was because I grew up in the 90s. Like, I would watch Spider-Man: The Animated Series and I would think "Oh wow, this is pretty cool; I wonder what the comics are like?" And then I'd go to the comics store, in amongst the covers of scantily clad Liefeldian T & A monstrosities with huge guns, and find the Spider-Man books, and it would be like "Clone Saga, month 13! Peter Parker was never the Real Spider-Man! And now he beats Mary Jane! But actually he is Spider-Man! Except he's not! But maybe...he is? Find out by collecting six concurrent Spider-Man titles, each priced at like $3 an issue (which is a lit of money when you're a kid in the 90s!) Also Doctor Octopus is currently dead! (He gets better)"
Don’t forget the limited edition foil covers!
1989’s Batman had such a weird impact on the comics industry. The movie sparked a renewed interest in comics so the Big Two responded by making comics as inaccessible to new readers as possible.
I didn't get into comics in the 80's because a comic was $1, took 10 minutes to read, and left me feeling like I read a chapter without context, while a second hand novel was $2, filled several hours, and told a whole story. It wasn't until I could borrow a bound collection of comics from the public library that it began to feel worthwhile.
I specifically LOVED the 90s Spider-Man TV show, but bounced off that stuff. Then, they promised to stop pulling that kind of shit at the end of the Clone Saga. So, I subscribed to Amazing Spider-Man for a few years. Then, they started starting stories in Spectacular Spider-Man and finishing them in Sensational Spider-Man and stuff, so I stopped subscribing and basically never bought a loose comic, instead of a collected graphic novel, again.
I got a job at a gas station across from a casino and a guy keeps coming in to buy whole cartons of cigarettes and talks in the third person calling himself "snake eyes pete" and every time I tell him his total hes like "tell ya what if old Pete rolls a snake eyes why dont you give it to him for free?" and he rolls the same set of loaded dice on the counter and it does not matter how many times he rolls snake eyes I will not give him the cartons for free he gets so mad
Snakeyes Pete is from Toronto he gave me a button once that said "Canadians have the best luck" and i said i thought that was the Irish and he said "I fucking hate the irish" and i said okay
this is so funny i can't
i want to see some absolutely dogshit, piss-poor renaissance paintings.
ik the masters were great and everything, but not everyone back then could have been a master. i need some frame of reference over here.
May I introduce you to "The Ricotta Eaters" (1585), a painting I could only describe as Ontologically Evil:
I know it's technically competent, but it just has a horrid aura surrounding it. I don't even care about disrespecting the Italian master Vincenzo Campi anymore, he should have looked at this painting and destroyed it like a sick beast.
They’re eating ricotta in a way we did NOT choose to continue
This feels like if The Stuff (1985) was a renaissance painting.

Having a whole living room wall full of decorative crosses and crucifixes in your house is the spiritual equivalent of consistently taking antibiotics "just in case" and washing your hands with bleach. Not only are you not making anything better for yourself, I'm pretty sure that you're making things way, way worse for everyone.
Im just imagining a demon building up a holy resistance stat till they can slip past a crucifix purchased at target and slapped on the wall then eventually moving on to one that was actually blessed by a priest and starting the stat grinding all over again.
They've developed an immunity to christianity, you gotta find a shinto priest to cleanse your home to make them leave.
I’ve been cackling about this for like five minutes now

O-okay, let’s get into this, shall we?
*grumbling* Would you rather work for Lex Luthor or the Joker- *shouting* Lex Luthor, by like, a fucking mile!
Yes, yes, working for Lex Luthor is basically like being an Amazon employee that makes weapons of mass destruction, which is bad. Lex is like Donald Trump mixed with Mark Zuckerberg mixed with Jeffrey fucking Bezos, it’s not a great mix. He does not treat his henchmen well. Their lives still suck, and they are probably monitored on how long they take piss breaks for.
But let’s analyze what working for Lex Luthor is like versus the fucking Joker. With Lex you probably get a dental plan, a health plan, a paycheck, and the guy that you’re fighting really cares about human life. Superman will hit you just long enough to knock you out, so you’re not a treat, so he can stop the problem.
If you work for the Joker, your payment is you’re not fucking dead. You say one wrong thing? Bang. You don’t laugh at his jokes? Bang! You do laugh at his jokes? Bang! You think Joker gives a fuck about a henchman?
Who’s Lex Luthor’s right-hand-man? It’s a woman, you sexist, her name is Mercy, she’s awesome. Who’s Joker’s right-hand-man? Bob? Nah, he’s dead. Harley? Tried to kill her multiple times. Slappy? Who the fuck is Slappy?
The best case scenario of working for the Joker is that you fight the fucking Batman! And that presents its own fucking list of problems. If you stop Superman as a Lex Luthor henchman, Lex’ll be pissed, but he’ll be at least happy that Superman was caught. If you stop Batman as a Joker henchman, you better have a fucking coffin picked out yesterday.
This isn’t a fun hypothetical question, this is a screening technique that the doctors at Arkham use to determine your mental health! There is a right and a wrong answer to this question, and the correct one is Lex fucking Luthor. Thank you for coming to my fucking Ted Talk, have a nice day.

Bitch neither I work for Wayne Industries, they got better offers than work these clowns:
batmans secret special attack is offering all of his enemys henchmen a living wage and guaranteed healthcare
At a minimum, if you've got the sort of resume of a low level thug that could see you working for either, with Luthor, you're waiting around to fight Superman in an office or warehouse with, like, a break room and bad coffee, and a security office with a bunch of screens and a rolly chair. With the Joker, you're probably hanging out waiting to get stealth taken out by Batman in, like, an abandoned carnival on a Superfund site. You're in a condemned building sitting on a rusty merry-go-round horse breathing in cancer and hoping the boss remembers to rob a McDonalds on the way home to feed you.
I definitely make spaghetti sauce extremely wrong but I'm not going to stop
Chop 1 onion and put it in a pot.
Add 1 or 2 cans of diced tomatoes. Whatever makes the ratio of onion look right.
Add a ridiculous amount of frozen peas. Peas should make up a notable portion of this sauce.
Add frozen corn also if you wanna be real fancy. If I have bacon, I'll add that too, but I very rarely have bacon.
Cook on HIGH.
While sauce is cooking, grab the nearest bottle of mixed spices that isn't obviously for desserts. Add some. How much? I dunno, enough that you feel like you've added seasoning so it's technically cooking. (For me this is most often a mix called Moroccan, but it could be anything. I've reorganised my kitchen recently so tonight it was something called Pizza Topping.)
If you happen to have green herbs lying around, add those too. Whatever you have on hand that's green.
Let the sauce boil on HIGH until all the water is gone. Stir occasionally so the saucepan will be easier to clean later. Serve on cooked spaghetti noodles with no cheese.
Today I added a new step called "while the sauce is cooking, duck out for 15 seconds to post about spaghetti sauce on Tumblr, then get distracted and forget you are cooking." This adds a novel Extremely Burnt edge to the flavour profile.
I am not Italian, or of Italian descent by *any* stretch of the imagination.
I am also not one of those "cooking purists", who believes that everything must be done in a specific/ traditional way (unless you are making a cooking video with the title "how to make x" in which case if you don't specify mid video that your way is not traditional god help you).
I am a firm believer in "If it tastes good, then it is correct for you".
Except in this case.
This hurts every cooking bone in my body. The latent ancestors in my soul. The judgmental elf in my brain just bit a cyanide capsule.
Why? The spices. Using a different spice mix every time, based on what is ready at hand just ... hurts.
Absolurl I deranged, Derin. Food crimes.
I don't know what sweating the onions means
It means. It means you cook em a little in a pan with a bit of oil first.
A pan? How many dishes do you want me to have to wash here?
I mean you can also do it in the same pot you're making the spaghetti sauce in! The important thing is the onions get a little cooked before the wet stuff goes in, so they're not so wet and limp and boiled....
Honestly this depends entirely on whether I remember to chop an onion first or I find the can opener for the tomatoes first. The ingredients go in in whatever order they go in.
Derin who hurt you
A pack of wild chefs herded my mother off a cliff
did ur mum get 2021 cruellaed
Yeah and now I'm in a war against food. I have to hunt down and kill Remy next.
I don't think you'll catch him. I think he'll smell that horrible sauce from miles afar and will run in the opposite direction. Jesus Christ Derin they sell sauce in jars you don't have to live like this.
I'm not buying that stuff I am a fancy chef
You are a fancy chef! Inventing whole new categories of food preparation methods, even!
I suggest trying butter beans or cannellini beans in place of the kidney beans at some point - I personally like those and a bit of capsicum in my spaghetti sauce. As well as garlic.
Oh I might have forgotten to add. When you do the onion, you also spoon in a completely random amount of jarred garlic.
Just to add to the chorus of horror, I think your stove is probably on it's last legs. If I did this on HIGH on my stove it would absolutely burn before it managed to cook.
sorry to everyone out there who thinks they have the funniest tshirt but i think i can confidently say i just saw the actual funniest tshirt just now. i passed by a beautiful black woman with long multicolor braids blowing majestically in the beach breeze & she was wearing an oversized tshirt that said in gigantic letters "WHITE BOY OF THE YEAR"
The funniest T-shirt I ever saw was a HEAVILY pregnant woman wearing a shirt that said "I Woke Up Like This".
We're spending a couple weeks in the upstate of New York with my parents and boy howdy are they being reintroduced into deals in a very big and aggressive way
"PAPA YOU HAVE TO RESPECT THE DEALS!!"
Oh Papa you fool you absolute fool
Papa shook the cross road demons hand and said "yeah okay sure deal" thinking she would forget - but the Deals Warlock never forgets and she's here to collect.
6.5 hours later and tiny hand is outstretched and saying "Papa you made a DEAL let's go to the pool"
And away they toddle, a 5 year old patron and the foolish man who sold his soul
THE WARLOCK WILL ALWAYS COLLECT PAPA YOU MUST HEED THIS WARNING (please note this man has not been in a body of water bigger then a puddle in 15 years)
My mom: can you ask your dad to come out here and fix the pool filter
Me: (walks a friggen mile up to the house to relay the message)
My dad: unfortunately I can not because I did make a deal with your daughter that I am holding my end up of right now and I am frankly kinda scared of her
My mom: can you ask
your dad to come out here and
fix the pool filter

lately my kids have been playing Baby Knife, which consists of somebody acting as a baby with knife hands chasing people while going "baby knife baby knife" over and over. is this a thing or are they just insane
we have a new teacher this year who has never had kindergarten before & she rounded em all up & told em No Baby Knife and No Zombies and idk how to tell her that 1. all kindergarten recess games boil down to Give Birth And Kill Each Other and 2. the absurd vaguely inappropriate games they make up are usually better than when they try to play an Actual game like soccer
Baby Knife is straightforward. theres a baby knife. baby knife chases you. thats about it. when they try to play Real Sports every single child is playing by a different set of rules unbeknownst to the others and none of them are playing by the Actual rules. everybody is mad at everybody else and running up to tell on their colleagues for cheating every 3 minutes. this doesnt happen when they play Baby Knife
if no one's said it, it's normal. It's just Tag with flavor. Tag is boring so you gotta add imagination.
Our baby knife as kids was Raptor Tag. Raptors hunt in packs so the person who was "it" had to run around pretending to be a velociraptor and to tag people they had to actually tackle them and "eat" them for 5 full seconds (others could come to the rescue and save them in that time, but risked getting eaten too or instead if the raptor switched targets). Eaten players then became raptors, until the whole pack was teamwork-hunting the last wily or lucky kid. There were no winning survivors- the game was won as a group once everyone was a raptor.
My kindergarten played "wolves" where a pack of 4-12 children, usually all the girls, would try to chase down and "kill" the deer (usually me)
I was bulled extensively in elementary school, but 1. Mostly by my teachers and 2. Not during this, because we ALL had PBS Nature and as Deer, I was allowed to gouge, kick, bite, keep running even after being grabbed, or body-check the larger children into the picnic tables and other architecture.
You know, for realism.
In point of fact, I was usually The Deer because I was the best at evading/ not going down without a fight, whereas most boys would just start crying or tattle, which is no fun at all.
We were incredibly boring. We played "murder ball" which was just Capture the Flag over the whole school grounds (outdoors only) and violence was permitted using the ball.
#We played Leeches (people run past you and you grab their legs and make them fall)#And Roadkill (body-slam your friends to the ground)#The teachers did not like these games
Your school would've loved Get Down, Mr President
We played a version of freeze tag where when you were frozen you became a toilet and in order to be unfrozen someone would have to sit on you and then flush (ie use the toilet)
We had Military Dodge. I want to be clear, we were the type of kids who hated Dodge Ball in Gym - which we considered some state sanctioned torture - but Military Dodge was fun because it was our choice to play or not, but it absolutely was mechanically worse. This may have existed on other playgrounds too, I don't know.
Players put their backs to the wall of the school building with one person currently in charge of throwing the ball as hard as possible at someone on the wall (we all wanted to see a brief imprint of "tioV" on the skin). You could try to dodge it but you had to stay against the wall. Torso shots were an auto out. If they hit a limb, you tucked it behind your body as if you'd lost it in combat. This actually meant legs were a more fun target than going straight for the torso as then you got a few rounds were a target could take additional limb hits because dodging was so much harder. Last player standing got to be thrower next round.
Eventually it was declared by teachers that the balls could only be used for kickball, funnelball or four square.
But yes, children crave Bloodsport.
I don't recall inventing any games, but Red Rover was just an excuse to clothesline people or whip them to the ground as hard as you could. There were monkey bar wars, too. You'd start at opposite ends, then leg wrestle in the middle.
I invented a game called "magpie" and told the kids at my new school that it was from my old school. The game was to get to the other side of the field without getting nailed by the magpie that roosted there.
I won every single game because my mum was a teacher and I had to spend hours at school after it closed so I fed the magpies and they recognized me. I invented the game because I suck at running, sick of losing every game, and it was really fun watching kids that were mean to me get nailed in the back of the skull by my friend, the magpie.
Back when I was, like, 12 years old, I didn't really consider myself political. I just believed in things that I naively supposed that everyone believed in, like
It's good that you don't have to go bankrupt from medical procedures (i'm Canadian)
Science is good and public policy should be informed by it
It's good to have a liveable planet
Peace is preferable to war
Etc.
Funny you mentioned 12 years old specifically, because I had a very different experience of being 12, and I was very much political
In fact, my politics back then were way way WAY different from what they are now, complete 180
Like, 12 year old me literally wanted to be Hitler 2.0, that's how bad it was
Naziism was always strictly abhorrent to me, as I grew up in a neighbourhood with a strong Jewish presence and my mother explained the history of racism to me at a very young age; however, there was definitely a time in early teenagerhood when I thought that most people were so stupid that they'd be better off with an intelligent dictator (me) ruling them.
I only abandoned that view once I figured out
(1) I wasn't as smart as I thought I was,
(2) society is actually a great deal more complicated than I had given it credit for, so complicated, in fact, that any dictatorship under any individual, no matter how well-meaning, would always end in disaster
(3) people that I'd written off as "stupid" or "ignorant" actually possessed a wealth of knowledge about topics that I understood so poorly that I didn't even know I didn't know about them.
I've now firmly come around to the view that most of the problems with democracy actually boil down to our societies not being democratic enough in key ways.
I was always anti-racist and pro-welfare state, mostly from the basics of listening to Sesame Street and Mr. Rodgers and not deciding that being a selfish bigot was cool for some reason later in life.
However, I also went through kind of a technocratic, Randian, 'I'm being oppressed for being so smart and powerful' phase. I even fantasized about starting some sort of Galt's Gulch/Rapture underground city of only smart people, that would do all this secret innovating, because of how smart we were, and not being limited by dumb people, and then come out and take things over. Of course, this phase for me was ages roughly 10-12, so meeting actual Ayn Rand libertarians in college was incredibly eye-rolling. Felt like meeting supposed adults whose politics was, like, that Power Rangers should be real.
