maybe i should talk more about the idea of transtextuality here which is the concept of a character occurring in many texts from many authors across time. it's similar to intertextuality in that it refers to something beyond the text itself but unlike intertextuality which is texts interacting with other texts, trasntextuality aims to get at the idea of a character/plot/thing existing beyond texts and being used by texts for their own purposes, drawing from a pre-existing set of connotations which expands and transforms with every new textual iteration.

it's especially useful for mythological figures, but holds true for any type of historical reception and connects it to modern reception i think, in that we can conceive of a literary something (mostly characters) as a thematic/narrative tool which serves the narrative, and can slightly differ or receive the application of a different lens to tell a different story in conversation with the audience's foreknowledge and assumptions.
