its been 6 months and im still not over this. easily best and most hilarious play in baseball history
for those who dont really understand:
-the first baseman had no reason to chase BaĂŠz, if he just stepped on the bag he was automatically out
-theres two outs, so if hes out, the inning is over. even if the runner on second base gets home, the run doesnt count. its not until hes safe at first that the run scores
-theres no specific rule in baseball about running backwards from first, just that you âcannot retreat to home baseâ meaning so long as if you dont touch the plate, its fine
-BaĂŠz ran backwards to kill enough to get the run to score, and then stole and extra base on the base on the bad throw
-HE TOOK THE TIME TO UMPIRE HIS OWN PLAY AND CALL SAFE
what a fucking sport yall
@fractaldunes
Javier BaĂŠzâs nickname according to those announcers is El Mago which is spanish for The Wizard
Well earned
love how the explanations do not help at all
Let me see if I can break this down a little more.
Javier BĂĄez (the batter, a Chicago Cub, wearing blue) has just hit the ball. His job is now to run around the bases - 1st, 2nd, 3rd, back to where he started (âhomeâ), at which point he will have scored a point. In practice, he will probably stop partway, wait for the next batter to get a hit, and try to make it home from there.
The Pittsburgh Pirates (in white) are fielding. Their job is to stop the Cubs from scoring by getting them out, by various combinations of catching the ball and tagging people or bases with it.
The scoreboard (top left) shows that one Cub has already made it to second base, so he will resume running now that Javy has a hit. It also shows that two Cubs are out. If a third Cub gets out, their turn to bat will be over, it will be the Piratesâ turn to bat, and the Cubs canât score anymore (for now, but thatâs not relevant).
The Pirate at first base (the first baseman) has the ball. All he needs to do is step on first base while holding it before Javy gets there, and Javy is out. This is probably the number one most common thing a first baseman has to do.
He does not do it.
For some reason he starts chasing Javy, presumably trying to tag him with the ball directly. This is a perfectly legitimate way of getting him out, but also completely unnecessary.
This has never happened to Javy before. Unsure what else to do, he just kind of⌠jogs backwards away from him.
Meanwhile, the Cub who was at second base (Contreras) has made it all the way back to home. Because the Piratesâ first baseman has helpfully walked the ball back home, he can easily toss it to the Pirate at home (the catcher) who will tag Contreras out.
The catcher doesnât tag him in time.
The umpire signals that Contreras is safe (not out).
Javy also signals that Contreras is safe, just for fun. Heâs never been nearby when a teammate makes it home before, and heâs enjoying himself.
Notice that the score has not changed, even though Contreras made it home. Thatâs because Javy is still technically running to first base. If he gets out before he reaches it, the Cubsâ turn to bat is over, and nothing else thatâs happened since he hit the ball matters.
Javy remembers this, and heads back to first base. The catcher throws the ball to another Pirates fielder, who is frantically running to do the first basemanâs job.
He doesnât catch it.
Javy is safe at first. Contreras scores (although the scoreboard wonât change for a second).
Javy notices how far away that ball landed, and decides he can make it to second base before anyone picks it up and tags him out.
An offscreen Pirate throws the ball to second base, where another Pirate is ready and waiting to catch it, tag Javy out, and end the Cubsâ turn to bat.
He doesnât catch it.
Javy is safe at second. The video doesnât show it, but he will go on to score as well.
This should have been a very easy out for the Pirates, but through two dropped catches and one truly bizarre decision from the first baseman, they snatched defeat from the jaws of victory and turned it into two points for the Cubs.
The Cubs won this game by two points.

Scientists finally solved a 150-year-old gallium mystery
Scientists have uncovered a hidden behavior in gallium that overturns decades of textbook science and could unlock new high-tech applications.
Nearly 150 years after gallium was first discovered and added to the periodic table, scientists at the University of Auckland have uncovered previously unknown details about the metal's atomic structure and behavior. Gallium was discovered in 1875 by French chemist Paul Ămile Lecoq de Boisbaudran. It is best known for its unusually low melting point, which allows a gallium spoon to melt in a cup of hot tea. The metal also plays an essential role in semiconductors and many modern electronic technologies. The newly reported findings focus on how gallium behaves at the atomic level, revealing properties that challenge decades of scientific understanding.

Further questions from the finance team
update on this:
i was in office yesterday with the finance team and they were playing the 'would you rather' game (you can see a bit of a previous round below the giraffe) so i decided it was an appropriate time to discuss the giraffe.
pointed out that it should correctly be C because that's where the shirt collar would sit. guy who (I think) drew the giraffe argues that the shirt collar could be at the top of the neck but says he'll go away and think about it. comes back to me at the end of the day and says he's been unable to find any artwork of giraffes in shirts with the collar at the top of their neck. so. i guess i win!! and he spent an unclear percentage of his day looking up furry art.
The Giraffe isn't wearing a shirt, though.
I don't know how you'd make a shirt with a collar that high unless it was a fairly ridiculous wing collar, although if this giraffe is going to an extremely formal occasion that might be appropriate.
The thing is, the rules of formality involve garments not really made for Giraffes. If you have a turndown collared shirt, you can't really extend it that far up the neck without it looking insane, and wearing the collar way below the bowtie seems, well, wrong.
On the other hand, the purpose of the tie and shirt collar is to frame and draw attention to the face, and placing the bowtie at the bottom of the neck is contrary to that purpose, tending to draw the eye away from the face.
If you're a non-anthropomorphic giraffe going Huckleberry Hound style with just a bowtie and no other clothes, as pictured in the drawing above, I personally have to agree with the majority opinion that placing it slightly below the chin is a valid choice.
It all depends on the rest of the costume and where you are trying to draw the eye.
Placing the bow tie at the bottom of the neck emphasizes the giraffe's size and distance from the audience, as their eyes are drawn away from face and towards parts of the body that don't show emotion.
Placing it just below the chin creates more intimacy with the audience, drawing the eye towards the face, emphasizing a shared emotional world.
It's really a matter of *why* this particular giraffe has chosen to wear a bow-tie.
Tbh, I think everyone getting very attached to Tall Adrianâ˘ď¸ kinda makes them miss the potential of the canon reality that Eridians average at 50cm tall.
Grace is living on a planet of toddler sized rocks with twice his strength. If at ANY point he forgets to look where heâs going he is Going Trip Over An Ambassador. Unstoppable force vs. immovable object except Grace is very much stoppable.
Eridians either get used to talking to his shins, craning on their tippy toes to get a good look at his face, or begin forcing him to sit criss-cross applesauce for literally any important meeting. Picture him joining the Erid equivalent of a UN press conference and having to curl up his awkward water body and hug his knees for the whole thing.
He can conceivably be picked up by an alien the size of a hard helmet against his will. Heâs surrounded by space roombas with perfect memories and attention spans shorter than his San Francisco classroom who canât believe heâs incapable of solving complex math in three seconds. He has step stools around his house for them to climb so he can feel like heâs âlooking them in the eyeâ even though Eridians think thatâs stupid since they lack both eyes and directional perception.
His students are probably all palm sized. Once he starts teaching heâs fighting cuteness aggression all day every day. They could all break his fingers with hands the size of a button. That knowledge does not stop his cuteness aggression. THIS IS GRACEâS REALITY.

'Ginkgo' chair by Claude Lalanne
here's two articles about how JK Rowling just posted on X an upskirt photo of Freda Wallace, a transgender woman, after deadnaming her and misgendering her repeatedly online.
The wealthy author escalated a social media spat that resulted in posting a photo from a 2023 event at the Institute of Economic Affairs in
Rowling posted the picture taken from below because the trans woman, she said, was "refusing to debate me."
Thank you for posting without the fucking destiel meme
So in summation; Rowling demanded access to a womanâs time and when she couldnât get it she retaliated by posting an upskirt image of her and called her fat, and some of her fans even went âI think I can see her genitalsâ.
She literally went âdebate me! Debate me!â Over and over like the grifter she is and when she couldnât get what she wanted and when ânoâ wasnât enough she resorted to retaliatory sex-pestery, posting an image of somebodyâs body with intention to shame and embarrass and spawn more waspish tittering from her internet followers.
Rowling is trash and this is disgraceful behavior, in case anyone has forgotten.
She had also claimed Freda "deserved" this sexual harassment because of what she was wearing... You know... The same excuse used over and over to try and justify rape.
J K Rowling committed a sex crime against a trans woman (specifically, violating the Sexual Offences Act 2003)
(1) A person (A) commits an offence ifâ
(a) A intentionally shares a photograph or film which shows, or appears to show, another person (B) in an intimate state, (b) B does not consent to the sharing of the photograph or film, and (c) A does not reasonably believe that B consents.
(2) A person (A) commits an offence ifâ
(a) A intentionally shares a photograph or film which shows, or appears to show, another person (B) in an intimate state, (b) A does so with the intention of causing B alarm, distress or humiliation, and (c) B does not consent to the sharing of the photograph or film.
A simple error got magnified by Flock's nationwide surveillance camera network and ended with four cop cars boxing me in.
Oh hey! Look! It's that thing everyone on the left said was going to happen happening!
âThe plates on this car are stolen,â Officer Ganshyn said. My face mustâve twisted in disbelief because he continued, saying they werenât sure whether the car itself or just the plates were stolen. This made absolutely no sense. Car companies keep meticulous track of the fleets they loan out to the media. The vehicles all have special manufacturer or dealer plates that are logged every time one enters or exits. The officers eventually ran the Range Roverâs VIN, and it came back clean, but in their view, the plates were definitely stolen.
Before I could even process that, another officer dropped the big surprise: theyâd actually been tracking me around town for days via Flock cameras. But they kept losing the trail, so when a camera alerted them that the Range Rover had been spotted turning into Kohlâs that morning, they quickly set up their ambush and waited for me and my wife to walk out of the store and get into the SUV.
[âŚ]
One of the officers pulled out his phone, opened the Flock app, and showed me two photos: a wide shot of the Range Rover going through the intersection and a zoomed-in shot of the New Jersey license plate, which clearly reads 34 10 DTM and says VEHICLE MFR along the bottom. Critically, the number 10 is in a much smaller font than the rest of the tag, which is the non-standard structure New Jersey uses for manufacturer plates.
[âŚ]
The New Jersey plates that were allegedly stolen from the LA dealer were 34 03 DTM, not 34 10 DTM. But when the police report was created and the plate was entered into Flockâs system, it was just recorded as 34 DTM. Just the five large characters, no little number in the middle. And Flockâs AI tech wasnât registering that non-standard little number when it began picking up the Range Rover around town. It just saw 34 DTM in large type and started alerting the local police.
As we all stood there shaking our heads, including my wife, who was finally allowed to join me, I connected the final dot. A lot of vehicles in JLRâs media fleet have a New Jersey manufacturer plate with the same alphanumeric structureâ34 ## DTMâand Officer Ganshyn observed that meant it was now a nationwide issue. Anywhere a police department has a partnership with Flock, any other JLR-owned car with the same plate structure is going to get flagged as stolen. In fact, four other 34 ## DTM cars were being tracked around Minnesota that week, according to Officer Ganshyn. I was just the first one to get nabbed. The only way to stop it would be for the LAPD to correct their initial report and update Flockâs system, which Jaguar Land Rover was now racing to make happen following the phone call.
Still, he warned me to drive straight home, park the Range Rover, and leave it there. If I were to cross into the neighboring town, Iâd probably get flagged again and go through this entire ordeal again with a different set of officers. His parting words were ominous: âYouâre lucky weâre in Plymouth. If you were in Minneapolis, they definitely wouldâve come at you with guns drawn.â

If i had the money, I would start a business called Box of Rocks. And it would be all electrical appliances that are, as it says on the company logo, as dumb as a box of Rocks.
No wifi or bluetooth connections. No touch screens. No predictive behaviours. No account log in. No fancy bullshit nonsense.
A fridge that does nothing but keep your food cool. A washing machine that washes clothes, the fucking end. And actually on the washing machine note: they would all have optional two-tap ports, so you CAN use the machine to heat the water if you need to, but you dont HAVE to, if youre in a home that has a massive hot water tank or whatever. AND, it would have fast cycles. None of this two hour minimum bullshit. Fuck outta here with that nonsense. 20 minute half-sized fast loads, 45 minute full sized regular loads, and a two hour option for those of you who like things slow or wanna give your towels an extra good long wash or whatever.
Anyway moving on. Dumb clothes dryers that just dry things, at a manually set array of temperatures, not an auto-temp chosen by the machine based on the detected type of fabric or size of the load. Dumb toasters. But QUALITY. None of this "its just fifteen bucks but it will last five minutes" shit. Dumb TVs. With various different ports, while we're at it. You want a security camera, but want full control of who accesses the recordings? Done. Dumb elevators, that go up and down at the press of a button and have no complex bullshit that takes out the whole lift whenever it experiences an internet outage.
DUMB CARS. WITH NO TOUCH SCREENS OR TRACKING TECH OR OTHER BULLSHIT.
GIVE ME MY APPLIANCES AS DUMB AS A BOX OF ROCKS. I DONT WANT THEM MAKING DECISIONS FOR ME. I DON'T WANT THEM "HELPING" ME. I DONT WANT TWO THIRDS OF THE BULLSHIT THATS IN THEM THESE DAYS.
I tried to buy a washing machine recently. They were ALL SOME DEGREE OF FUCKING "SMART." And yeah you can simply opt to not set it up, which is what i ended up doing, but it still prompts me even now to "complete set up?" AND it pushed the overall price of washing machines up because even though I dont plan to USE any of their STUPID smart tech, it was still included in the model! So it costs more! Because its "smart"!
Well i dont WANT IT TO BE SMART. I WANT IT TO BE DUMB. I WANT MANUALLY CHOSEN SETTINGS. I WANT BUTTONS AND KNOBS. I WANT IT TO BE INERT WHEN NOT IN USE. I WANT IT STUPID BUT FUNCTIONAL. THIS CANNOT BE A NICHE MARKET. GIVE ME STUPID APPLIANCES.

Genuine question why the fuck is February only allowed have 28 days? why can't we just give it one of January's and March's extras and even the score to 30. what fucklehead is responsible for this conniving calendar thievery
well shit we really did just let the romans get away with any ole thing huh
I'm telling you guys. SIX days per week. THIRTY days per month. TWELVE months per year. A thirteenth "liminal month" of five days (six on leap years) between years, which is considered a holiday period.
Six day week is superior to seven because a prime number week is stupid. There's a lot of things that people like to do every second or third day; in a six day week, this is always the same days each week.
All months are the same length. Advantages obvious.
Thirty days is a good round number for a month; it can be divided into so many smaller numbers. Convenient for things that need to be done regularly; you can do them on the same days each month and have the gaps between them all exactly the same.
Every month in a given year starts with the same day. If the 3rd is a Wednesday, every 3rd will be a Wednesday. This is a massive help in scheduling bullshit that ends up happening "second Tuesday of every month" or whatever, and also helps people track regular monthly things (if you have a monthly meeting on the 15th, it's going to be the same day of the week every time). Fitting weeks perfectly into months just offer so many improvements for scheduling and remembering stuff.
The days move back with each non-leap year -- if the 1st of every month in 2025 is a Tuesday, the 1st in every month in 2026 will be a Monday. (This also happens with out current calendar as neither 6 nor 7 fit into 365). This means that if your birthday is on a Monday or whatever, it won't be that way every year -- only the same day of the month WITHIN THE YEAR (2 years in a row for leap years) is the same. (I bring this up because last time I mentioned this people didn't do the math and thought that the days of the week would be consistent across years, somehow, mysteriously).
Holiday transition period between years. You know you want it. People treat the Christmas-New Year's period like this already when their work lets them do it. Make it official.
bonus effect: you can really piss off everyone who does things by lunar cycles
Unless you wanna go out there with some rockets and push the moon yourself, the solar and lunar calendars are never going to match, and there is no point in trying to make them. If you live a life that needs both solar and lunar calendars then you are simply always going to need two calendars.
