Not a fan of "theft of thought" - automated plagiarism is wrong because it prevents people from getting opportunities, money, or simple social acknowledgement despite providing work that can profit the community or better the world. I believe the sole implication for people who genuinely do it is that they are starting with a list of things that is very familiar to them and has a logical sequence within. Something they already know very well through sheer repetition. They know their house super well because they live in it. They won't forget about the bedroom or the kitchen.

Then they associate something with the bedroom or the kitchen. So when they want to remember the something, the association can help them, because they won't necessarily think of the something immediately, but they get into the routine of "okay, I am in my home, there's the bedroom, the living room, the loo, the kitchen... AND KITCHEN MEANS THE KIDS SHIT I FORGOT THE KIDS"

That's why thy travel through it in the same order always, they're making an ordered list starting from a logical order that they don't have to learn

Making an association with a pre-existing list is one technique amongst many, and making the list "places I can think of easily" is more useful to people who can bring up places in their mind easily in the first place.

You can do it with your fingers if you don't mind your left thumb to make you think of clowns or something
