You know, I really hate jokes about "how fast Demi Lovato dropped they/them pronouns" because like. A) they didn't. Demi has they/she listed on her social media pages. They still use they/them, and B) the reason they added she/her back and the reason you think Demi "dropped they/them" is because people are transphobic and exorsexist and never used their pronouns in the first place! It's literally because people were exorsexist to them.

When I was 16, I went to the doctor for widespread, full body pain. My doctor took one look at me and dismissed my medical concerns as a purely hormonal issue. According to her, my natural, unshaven legs were "abnormally hairy" for a girl my age. She ignored everything I had to say and ignored me to a gynecologist.
Just hours later, I was hospitalized for my pain, which was now accompanied by a fever and a heart rate of 160 BPM. I was confused and disoriented, and every blood test pointed towards high levels of inflammation. The doctors, in their report, attributed my symptoms to sepsis.
That wasn't my first time experiencing transphobia in American healthcare hell, but it is by far the most obvious example. My doctor didn't care that I was in pain. She only cared that I, a nonbinary teenager with an F on their birth certificate, didn't meet her expectations of femininity.
This is why it pisses me off when people tell me I'm not really trans, or that I don't experience transphobia as a nonbinary person. I could have fucking died that day, purely because my doctor couldn't see past my nonbinary identity and gender expression.
I went to urgent care with symptoms of thrombocytopenia. When they ran my labs, my platelets were pretty low, roughly 50,000 (normal range is above 120,000 and emergency range is below 30,000). I was advised to make an appointment with my primary care doctor ASAP to be referred to a hematologist (as required by my insurance), and to go to the ER if it got any worse before that appointment.
Four days later, it got worse. I was confused, dizzy, uncoordinated, and generally not feeling well. I immediately went to the ER.
Initially, I was treated pretty normally. They put in an IV, drew blood, asked me about my symptoms, all the normal stuff, and they were generally pretty nice about it. But then they had me do patient registration, where I was given the opportunity to put my preferred name and pronouns on my chart, rather than continue to get deadnamed and misgendered, which was causing me additional stress on top of The Symptoms.
They called me my preferred name one time, and sounded very confused doing so. Once they realized I was transgender, the quality of my care immediately declined. No more nice chitchat. No more asking how I was doing. No more smiling.
They sent me home. I got my lab results in my discharge paperwork. My platelets were at 27,000. When I went to my primary care doctor the next day and she saw my labs, she immediately got red in the face.
“What the fuck? They sent you home? They’re supposed to admit you for anything below 30,000! What the fuck were they thinking?”
I didn’t know whether or not she’d believe me if I said it was because I’m nonbinary, so I just said I didn’t know.
She managed to find a hematologist in my network that could fit me in for an emergency transfusion two days later. My platelets were at 12,000 at that point and he said if I’d so much as bumped into something wrong before I got there, I would’ve died.
Don’t ever fucking tell me that nonbinary people have “cissexual privilege”.

thing I am proud of: when the doctor started going on a weird rant about long covid not being real I paused and listened to his nonsense for a bit and then very calmly said, in a polite and curious tone, "you don't believe in post-viral illness?" and he like. stammered a bunch and was like OH WELL I'M NOT SAYING -- I DON'T...I just think ..! and backpedaled awkwardly while I just sat there like :3c interesting :3c thank you so much for clarifying your stance on this :3c
an important skill for chronically ill people to develop is the ability to treat the doctor as though they are simply a person you are interviewing to find out how much they know about your condition.
Holy shit op this is LITERALLY in the book 'Never Split The Difference: Negotiating as if Your Life Depends On It'. Written by a guy who did hostage negotiation and then tried doing business negotiation, and mopped the floor with industry experts.
I'm fortunate enough to have a primary care doctor who knows about hEDS, but it's occurring to me that the skills in this book could be medically life changing for chronically ill folks of all kinds. Like. Literally a matter of life and death, especially for BIPOC and/or fat and/or young people who are having their issues dismissed.
HMMM interesting!! will have to check this out
how many nonbinary people have come out publicly only to then semi re-closet themselves because people are so incapable of not being extremely exorsexist towards them immediately... ive seen this happen to nonbinary people across agab we cannot catch a damn break
also the way people tend to see misgendering nonbinary as like. "softer" or easier or more understandable than misgendering a binary trans person. like it doesn't even really matter, because it's basically just an aesthetic choice, and not anything to be taken that seriously
#i remember when mr beard came out and immidiately had to go back in the closet#because people were giving him shit for not changing his presentation or pronouns#its really sad
forgot about mr. beard but yeah that made so upset on his behalf!!!!!
and what's annoying is how often binary trans people just don't seem to react? like this is what i mean by people treat misgendering nonbinary people as "softer." a trans man or a trans woman getting harassed back into the closet is a tragedy, a nonbinary person getting harassed back into the closet is just another wednesday for a lot of binary trans people.
#yeah.#and then when we stand up for ourselves we’re ‘difficult’ and no longer ‘one of the fun chill ones’#i can be chill#but im entitled to the same god damn respect and i will insist upon it#get yourselves right i’m fucking tired
no this too. i do feel there's this. expectation. that all nonbinary people will be rather apathetic about their genders, that the "good" nonbinary people (who isn't "crazy" and "dramatic" and "trying so hard to be woke") don't really care about what pronouns or nouns you use, will be binarize themselves in whatever way is easiest for the binary people & system around them, will be largely unobtrusive about their gender unless it can be a funny joke for binary people (even "inclusive" ones).
& then this feeds into what i described above, binary trans people & cis allies treating nonbinary people being misgendered or going back in the closet as less serious and less tragic and less disruptive than binary people. the assumption that nonbinary people somehow have less stake in being trans, that we never physically transition, that we never have dysphoria, etc. instead of being horrified that recloseting or never coming out ever is so common that so many nonbinary people are so used to repressing their own wants and needs preemptively. using pronouns they don't really connect with just to not be seen as "unreasonable" but it doesn't hurt as bad if its not technically misgendering. there's a lot of pain in the nonbinary community that i think we have never been allowed to fully voice.
#exorsexism#i know this is usually about misgendering enbies as their assigned genders#but. i keep distancing myself from transfemininity bc people keep using it as an excuse to misgender me as a Girl#i dont want to be called she or girl or sister but people act like The Default Transfem has to be a girl when talking about her problems#im not a girl or a woman! or a puppy creature robot notperson thing! im not any online transfem stereotype! im an enby person!#and it's honestly really upsetting to be put into another stereotyped gendered box by other trans people#my gender doesnt mean i hate transfem girls or creatures or things! im just not one of them! people online dont get this
this post is ABSOLUTELY including misgendering enbies as the "opposite" gender btw. it is no less fucked up & i'm really sorry you have to deal with
personally i've started thinking maybe we could use a neologism, similar to malgendering for misgendering, to describe the kind of forced detransitioning/conversion therapy that nonbinary/genderqueer people are subjected to, where the goal is not to make them cis but to make them binary and thus palatable to cisness through forced binary transitioning.
also here's a hot take. we talk way less about this ^ kind of misgendering because its something that unites nonbinary people regardless of gender we were raised as. when you just focus on misgendering-as-perceived-sex you group trans men&mascs with nonbinary people raised female and trans women&fems with nonbinary people raised male. but what is described above is exactly what i have heard from nonbinary people who are transmasculinized.
a lot of people don't understand that just because you say you accept nonbinary people doesn't mean you don't subconsciously see our genders as less real! like trans people should not have to be begging OTHER trans people to understand that they aren't the gender they aren't. nonbinary people can feel dysphoria in "both directions" and it really sucks that only one direction seems to matter to many other trans people!!!
"what if someone regrets transitioning" if you are 18 or over in free country usa you can walk into any tattoo parlor and ask for a tattoo that will be on your body forever and ever and ever and they will give it to you with the understanding that if you dont like the result or you regret it later that's your fucking problem and not theirs

I understand the urge to comment on recent trends in which people seem to want increasingly sanitized media compared to the recent past, but when you say things like "people used to just shrug and move on when there were books and movies that made them uncomfortable" it's like...well. actually people used to convict artists of obscenity in a court of law.
Hello, I work for a large moderately evil corporation and for at least five years now I have to sign a yearly thing to say I will never ever have one of these devices in the same room as me while I work.
My large moderately evil employer takes it for granted that these things are spying on me at all times, and you should too.
Watched a documentary about abuse and advice one guy said to give children was, "Tell them that if someone is hurting them, to tell someone - and don't just tell one person. Tell as many people as possible, and keep telling as many people as possible until the abuse stops." and i really liked that
Bc so many ppl focus on the idea of telling A Trusted Adult, but even a well-meaning individual can fuck up and let abuse fall through the cracks or not know what to do
Whereas if a child tells LOADS of adults AND other kids, there's far less opportunity for an abuser to do damage control
Consistently telling their story and spreading it around disempowers the abuser to control and coerce the flow of information, or to utilise gaps and weaknesses in systems of reporting or welfare to isolate the child
Just really good advice. Not suprised I don't hear it more often.
Hate to ask but I need help, I have no money for medication I really need, I spent the last of what I had on the things I need to get my car fixed that just failed inspection. if anyone can shoot me a dollar or two on k*fi or anywhere I’d be super grateful.
my car failing inspection has increased so many expenses. not having a car in a carcentric society as a disabled person sucks. car being unusable also means I can’t use it to make the money I need rn so my options are ask for help or sw which I don’t have capacity for atm.

We're at the "JK Rowling is personally funding litigation to try and destroy AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL" stage of rabid UK terf brain.
Screenshot via Alejandra Caraballo @esqueer.net on bluesky
Tldr Amnesty International, global human rights organisation, published a report called 'A growing threat: the anti-rights movement in the UK'. In it is detailed, amongst others, a whole bunch of transphobic groups and organisations, including Beira's Place, JK Rowling's trans exclusionary sexual violence support service. JK Rowling threw a shit fit and got Amnesty to take the report down by threatening libel. This was obviously not enough, because you can't appease a fascist, so now she's going to bankroll a bunch of lawsuits anyway through the JK Rowling Women's Fund.*
You can read an archived version of the report here, please save it and share it.
*Not so friendly reminder there is no way to engage in the wizard books without enabling this shit.
Mechanisms of assimilation push GNC folk into the gender binary by making basic necessities and goods available only to persons who assimilate to some binary gender. Whereas mechanisms of assignment push us into some assigned place in the gender binary—usually the gender associated with one’s presumed birth assignment—mechanisms of assimilation push us to be somewhere, anywhere in the gender binary. Mechanisms of assignment enforce the placelessness of GNC folk by assigning individual people into binary gender roles; mechanisms of assimilation enforce the same by pushing GNC folk to assimilate into physical, institutional, legal, and social spaces that allow only for binary gender roles. Mechanisms of assignment push triangular (oval, rectangular, trapezoidal, etc.) blocks into round holes or square holes. Mechanisms of assimilation produce lids (for buckets of blocks) that have only round and square holes. Readers are likely aware that the organization of physical, institutional, legal, and social space is such that there is often no place for GNC folk [as] GNC. Gender segregated bathrooms, schools, dormitories, sports, prisons, shelters, and recovery centers are common. They organize physical, institutional, legal, and social space in ways that make appropriate places for people who are men (and not women) and appropriate places for people who are women (and not men). If you are both or neither, then patriarchal gender segregation organizes the world such that there is no place for you. If you want to use the bathroom, live in a dormitory, play a sport, or access a shelter for homelessness, addiction, or to escape abuse, then you will often have to assimilate into the gender binary; this means you must stop being both/neither, conceal your gender non-conformity, or let others overlook it. If you are incarcerated or sent to a gender segregated school, shelter, or care facility, you will be presumed to be (only) a man or (only) a woman. Gender segregated spaces serve to enforce the nonexistence of GNC folk and push us into the gender binary.
