rewatched strictly ballroom w audio commentary for the first time since like 2011. here are some bits i wrote down while listening. really excellent commentary track with baz, the choreographer, and a production and costume designer
I've been thinking about this explanation of Camp ever since I read it, and it was handy to have in mind for CMAT's Jimmy Kimmel perfomance.
The subject of this song - little girls being conditioned to sexualise themselves before they even know it, while adult women are pushed to infantilize themselves "so you'll be nice to me" - is sad, sharp and angry, and incisively well articulated in the lyrics, but it sneaks in because it's delivered via Camp, even if it's in a distinctively Irish vocabulary of Camp vs an American one.
