ngl some of these posts sound shortsighted so i’m pulling out the Marjane Satrapi quote:
"You are American, I am Iranian, we don’t know each other, but we talk together and we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you. And our governments are very much the same."
Elizabeth encounters something unexpected and shocking in the gardens of Pemberley
Inspired by this post and made for @janeuary-month Day 1: Garden. This one is slightly less stupid than the Darcy version I made, but still very silly. Enjoy!
for once it's better to watch this one without sound first
A little post in favour of getting involved in other people's lives...
I'm the only person who intervened when a woman was sunbathing topless and a bunch of young men surrounded her, called her a whore and ordered her to cover herself. I yelled at them, they tried to turn it on me, it didn't work, they stopped and begrudgingly left, the woman thanked me.
I'm the only person who intervened when I heard a woman fighting a man to escape an apartment; she was only wearing her panties. I grabbed her and told the man to let go of her, which he did. I noticed she had a knife in her hand. I stayed with her for a while till she calmed down and decided what she wanted to do.
I've called the police twice on a man who was beating women in his apartment. Everybody could hear it, no one else cared. The police came, didn't do anything. However, it sent a clear message to both the man and his victims: what's happening is not okay and some people are paying attention and they care enough. I also alerted the building manager.
And this week-end, I alerted a pet shelter because a neighbour who had recently adopted a dog was mistreating him. They immediately sent a team.
And many other instances.
I'm not saying it's easy, my hands are always shaking when I decide to intervene, but it's not that hard and it can make a difference. You have to think of the victims. I know the doubts one might feel: Is it that bad that it needs reporting? Am I going to make things worse? Am I going to hurt someone's feelings or get them in trouble with the law? Am I going to be victimised too? Am I a snitch? Trust me, it's better to be "overreacting" and to be a "snitch" than to look the other way when you could save someone's life. "What if I'm mistaken about the situation?" So what? A little embarrassment never killed anyone, but neglect does, every day.
My cousin once told me the story of when a woman was banging at every door in her building, begging for help and saying her husband was going to kill her. And my cousin said she didn't open her door, because it was none of her business and she didn't want to risk getting involved. From what I've seen, it seems to be how most people still operate. It's none of my business! What's the point of living in a society if people are going to stay as silent as trees? Might as well live in the woods.
I've been through hell and I remember all the times I was left to die by neighbours, teachers, doctors, the police or emergency responders. But I also remember, perhaps more starkly, the people who helped me. I remember the social worker who confronted my mother. I remember the woman on the train who immediately noticed I needed medical attention. I remember the man who yelled from his balcony at the boy who was assaulting me. I remember the people who helped me and my dog get out of the river.
All I can say is: if you can help a woman, a child or a pet, please try. It's not your fault if you don't succeed. But you need to try.
okay. in english read clearly has two sort of meanings. read as in absorb a story. and then read as in literally reading words with your eyes. this is why ppl talk past each other. but the distinction is important because what is happening in your brain when you literally read words absolutely cannot be replicated with any other activity. this is why ppl get frustrated at "audio books are reading!!!" people. like yes, I like audio books too. I think they're great. and yes you absorbed a story. but it just literally cannot replace the mental practice of reading. you just need to make sure you are READING. you have to do it or you will lose all sort of skills, to the point where maybe you aren't actually absorbing stories from audio books as well as you think. you need to read. you just gotta!!! there's no way around it!!! and when ppl are trying to talk about declining literacy rates and why that is detrimental to all sort of rhetorical skills and retention skills and persuasion skills and comprehension skills and decoding skills and you come in with a "don't worry! audio books count :)" it just kinda proves the point!!!! like pick up a 60 page novella and read it pls. at least once a quarter. bare minimum you just have to do it!!!!

men make it absolutely impossible to practice humility
what you say: “I think this is the case”
what men hear: “I have no idea whatsoever, but here’s a totally random guess”
what you say: “I’m not an expert on this subject”
what men hear: “I don’t know anything about this subject and need its bare fundamentals explained to me”
what you say: “I could be better read in this area”
what men hear: “I have never read anything in this area”
like okay fuck it nevermind I’m actually an expert in every subject I’ve ever read or heard about. in fact I know everything.
It’s kinda crazy that the only argument you ever see for sex segregation is safety because like yeah safety but also like, what if I just don’t fucking want to? Or what if it’s not that women can’t win against men in male-designed sports/competitions, but we just don’t fucking want to? Maybe playing chess in co ed leagues isnt unsafe and there’s no inherent difference in ability, but what if I just fucking want to play with women? Why do we always have to fucking beg for safety.
And, I mean, it's not even just about safety in the actual sport or actual jobs. Like, yeah, male & female firefighters both face danger if they run into a burning building, but men will put glass in a woman's firefighter boots. They will deplete the oxygen in her emergency tank. They will jizz on her personal belongings if she stays in the firehouse with them. Even fucking *chess* "grand masters" will jizz on women's belongings or the women themselves. Men do not want women in "*their*" fields. I mean, sometimes it's perfectly physically safe for everyone involved, but *someone* is being harassed and it's not the males. So yeah, we women make our own divisions so we don't have to deal with the male violence and hazing. Who the fuck wants to deal with all that shit while trying to accomplish things? If a man did that to another man, one of them would end up beaten to a pulp. But because women can't kill men with our bare hands without scheming, self defense laws don't protect us. Documented physical/sexual/financial abuse is not enough to excuse your last ditch effort of self defense as a woman, even if she's trying to protect her children.
So is it any wonder that women want spaces/sports/shortlists without men in them? That we want a sense of peace, occasionally? Places where we won't be called a whore and told that we only got to this place by sleeping with someone or cheating?
apparently my boss who is a professor at my school doesn’t have a cell phone and his coworkers were upset by this so they bought him a childs toy phone and labeled it “David’s jitterbug” (for those of you that don’t know jitterbugs are phones made for old people that have like massive buttons and shit) so the other day I walked into his office to ask him a question and he pressed a button on it which made it start loudly playing the ABCs and he said “excuse me I have to take this” and then started singing along to the ABCs while shooing me out of his office
this is the phone. he apparently was in the middle of a meeting with the department the other day and got annoyed so he pressed a button, said “I have to take this” and left
David’s co-workers probably: “This is a valid tactic to embarrass him into buying a mobile phone, right?”
David: “Bold of you to assume that I get embarrassed.”

There’s a non insignificant number of adults who don’t know you’re allowed to learn stuff outside of school.
this genre of tweet
things i am according to dumbass bitches in the notes:
- eugenicist towards white people (i am white)
- heterophobic and misogynist (shaming straight women into celibacy because i apparently have that power)
- misandrist (because men are oppressed, especially colonisers, rapists, cheaters, racists and their supporters from the screenshots)
- transphobic (when an mtf who lives as a straight woman feels insecure over a tumblr post making fun of ugly men we need to consider they were raised as an mlm! while still seeing them as an actual valid straight woman who is somehow experiencing homophobia)
- homophobic (no explanation given)

Y'all for real please do these. Even if you're certain your posture doesn't suck. One day you will wake up with impinged shoulder pain like I did and let me tell you it fucking HURTS. Do these exercises even just once a week and it will make such a difference. Especially my fellow creatives out there, stop shrimping over your work and go do these right now. RIGHT NOW.

My favorite thing to say when someone won't do something for me is, "Aw, c'mon, it's my birthday this year," and if they catch on and say, "What are you talking about? This YEAR? Everybody has a birthday this YEAR," respond with, "You're really gonna act like this on everybody's birthday?"
what annoys me about explaining evolution to people who don’t think it’s real is that everyone’s idea of how it works seems to be from this
Whereas the reality is far more like
