I just watched Iron Lung (so some spoilers ahead, that’s your warning) and while it was good and I liked it mostly, I was also pretty confused about how everyone is extrapolating so much lore from it? I have a lot of questions still. I saw someone mention that Simon grew up on mars? Where did that come from?
When did the silent rapture actually happen, chronologically? I would guess like 20ish years ago (as of the time the movie takes place) but I could be way off.
What was filament station? Why was it so important? What was “the plan” that went wrong? Did he end up destroying the last tree, is that what it was?*
*Obviously a bunch of people died also. Speaking of which, did that really warrant the nickname “the butcher”? I feel like that implies a level of very intentional person to person violence that I don’t think was mentioned- or that simon would do- he seems like a pretty nice guy all things considered.
What is the COI (I think that’s right?) and what is Eden? I had assumed it was kind of an extinctionist religious cult where Simon grew up and later wanted to leave, which lead to the destruction of filament station during the plan that went awry somehow- but whatever.
Also the existence of the alien creature/eel thing- is that implied to be like, the cause of this voice that is haunting Simon?
Anyway lmk in the replies cause I watched this movie so I could read bloodymary fics without being confused but I still need some clarification thank you 🙏🏻

See the thing about Stratt putting all media ever in the Hail Mary is that it isn’t just for lolz or to keep the crew entertained, it always struck me as something deeply sad. Because even if all the crew survived, there was no way they could consume all possible media ever, language barriers alone would present a problem. And even then, they had a job to do and focus on first (which could have theoretically taken decades of work to figure out) so they wouldn’t have much use for The Great Gatsby or a week’s worth of poorly written amateur Guatemalan experimental opera. Let us remember that Stratt is practical and true utilitarian Instead, I think it was another part of the Hail Mary. If the scientists failed, if the Earth died, then what? Everything would have been completely lost. Art, music, film, history. Destroyed. Without a single living soul to remember it by. It would be as if all of humanity had never existed.
But if it survived? If other alien civilizations discovered traces of humanity? Then the memory of mankind could live on and be remembered. What better way to do that than to send everything (literally everything, the art, the music, the science, the history) out as far as humanly possible so that it might connect with someone else in the universe? It would be a long shot, a Hail Mary, but it was the best chance that humanity had to be remembered
It's ok, it's just that when Grace first meets Eva she picks up the Earth beanbag from his desk & then when she leaves him the astrophage dots she tosses it back to him & then he carries it through interstellar space to ultimately give it to Rocky. And then at the same time Rocky gives Grace his waving-xenonite-Grace-figurine when they first meet, which Grace keeps with him the entire time, to ultimately send it back to Eva.
