Gimmie Eridians who send earth a message saying “We know it must have hurt to send your heroes to die, but one made it and he’s safe here. We lost 22 good Eridians on the journey we would have lost 23 if not for your Grace.”

Give me humans sitting on Earth slowly coming to the conclusion that when we look up not only are we not alone, someone out there is alive because of one of us. That no matter what we think of ourselves a whole species thinks highly of us because we helped save the galaxy. Give me humans who figure out how to send a probe to Erid filled to the brim with messages for Grace and footage of a monument being raised that reads his name, his crews names, and then “in memory of the 22 Eridians who lost their lives on the journey to save the stars.”

rocky getting into pseudoscience for shits and giggles would be SO FUCKING FUNNY. imagine: he might take it seriously for five minutes. the whole point of it is that its vague and convoluted enough to hook people who have some blind spots as to how the world works. lots of earth culture sounds made up! its all very confusing!

and then grace very gently corrects him but also crucially makes fun of him the entire time.

rocky: (peeved) how would rocky know this crazy science wrong and dumb? relativity also crazy science but is real!

grace: haha... but seriously though. its not remotely the same. (twenty minute rant about how people conflating the two is actually a VERY serious issue back on earth)

rocky, being inquisitive, keeps researching and soon finds out that bringing up his new pseudoscientific discoveries & pretending to be fully earnest about it all is probably one of THE easiest ways to drive grace up the wall. needless to say he exploits this tactic to no end.

If you ever hear the phrase "fascism is aesthetics as politics," that's what this post is talking about.

It's not about being tough on crime, because the absolute toughest most brutal measure you could take against "crime" as a social problem is to alleviate poverty, and increase access to education, healthcare and social mobility.

It's about performing "tough on crime" as an aesthetic by enacting violence against a prop, i.e. minorities and the impoverished, who are fetishized and objectified to represent "crime." They are brutalized as punishment for crime, but never with the purpose of alleviating the problem of crime.

This is why a lot of conservatives and other right wingers can get straight up angry when you suggest things like reform or social measures to reduce crime. They don't want crime to be reduced, they want an eternal war against "crime" because it provides an arena for the righteous to demonstrate virtue by brutalizing their enemies.

As much as I like the humanized Rocky designs/humanized Eridian designs, with all due respect I cannot comprehend why anyone would want to change a story in which the alien is LITERALLY ALIEN and that is one of the big plot points and notable things in the story into one where yeah he’s literally just another guy. Where’s the intrigue.

I started reading a fic and about 1 chapter in I realize that the Eridians in this story are basically humans and their only difference is that they breathe ammonia. Like what. Guys. We’re losing the plot here

Such a fan of the way the audiobook narrator reads the scene where Stratt processes Shapiro and DuBois' deaths. It adds so much depth. Grace is hysterical, only half listening to her, strugging to accept that their friends are dead, and she's barely hanging on, a desperate edge in her voice when she tells him he has to make a list, they need a new science officer now.

It's like. Oh. This is when she realised what she was going to have to do. And she's going to do everything in her power to avoid having to do it, and she's going to fail.

To be quite honest with you all I do think that aro/ace-spectrum fans in fandoms where people are desperately inventing crossover ships and humanizing non-human characters in order to have a conventionally attractive guy to ship the main character with, instead of possibly having to enjoy a story with no romance in it, have the right to refer to everyone else as cowards.
