It’s not bread but honestly I’m not sure we’re keeping track anymore

Because like damn guys, sometimes I just don’t wanna deal with super deep narratives about identity and misogyny. Sometimes I just can’t handle the secondary trauma of movies like the joy luck club and maos last dancer. Sometimes I just need to escape into a happy place of light humor and hot people. And sometimes I want that happy place to show ppl who look like me.

Also launched the careers of two men who wouldn’t have gotten callbacks otherwise (not to mention Kal’s political activism !) So like…yeah.

(again, i mean no disrespect or hate towards any of the white actors and actresses in tfatws, including sebastian stan!!)

but i was reading through the interview that anthony mackie gave for variety magazine (2021) and there was one thing he said that, in light of recent comments and takes i have seen regarding the unequal consideration of sebastian stan and anthony mackie’s acting and characters in tfatws, really resonated with me.

this? this is awful. this quote shows that not only does anthony mackie know that he is viewed in this light by critics and fans of the white actors whose fame he watched from the sidelines, it shows that this is normal for him. 

anthony mackie is so used to being sidelined and looked over that it is normal for him to feel like that.

anthony mackie went to juilliard. juilliard. the legendary performing arts school. he worked his way through project after project, was forced to watch his white costars’ celebrity rise from the sidelines of many of them, but kept acting and taking projects that were important to him (ie. the banker, shelter, detroit, the hate u give). he is a very talented actor with excellent range, an actor who tries to understand every character he portrays and works to the peak of his ability to play them accurately.

and it is evident that in the mcu, in the case of sam wilson, he has done a fantastic job. 

he took mcu sam wilson from a potentially two-dimensional cap sidekick to having a personality highly suggestive of the fleshed out, opinionated, reckless hero that he is in the comics, and that portrayal likely would not have come through in ca:tws and beyond from a lesser actor. 

mackie has also mentioned in interviews that one of his greatest concerns is that of the success of tfatws, because he has felt that if the show flops greatly the marvel executives are going to see his casting as nothing more than a mistake. 

that is also heartbreaking. he has done nothing to deserve feeling like that, yet he is so used to being kept in the shadows that that is honestly how he feels about his first lead in a major franchise. 

so i hope i don’t see everyone talking solely about sebastian stan’s acting. and completely glossing over the fact that even from the trailers and clips, anthony mackie has had a magnanimous presence in the show and in the story.

because that is already, unfortunately, happening.

this goes back to what some people had mentioned on my previous post that i had noticed as well, where. it was sebastian stan’s tag trending after the big tfatws content day, while mackie’s was not.

that’s absurd. mackie is the other lead of this show, not even cast in a side role this time, and he is still being sidelined by fans in favour of yet another white man. and sebastian is an excellent actor in his own right, yes, but nothing warrants ignoring anthony mackie’s presence in the show, as he is the other lead.

as fans, we have the ability and therefore the responsibility to make this the show where mackie can have faith that he truly is a main character and the lead in what is going to be a very successful tv show, not just a prop for yet another white man. 

we have the power to do that.

and mackie damn well deserves it.

Idiots on TikTok have been coming out in droves in support of some bullshit identity called “super straight” which basically means that they’re only attracted to cis people 🙄 They’re trying to wedge themselves into the LGBTQ+ community and their claim is that it’s phobic toward them to say that they’re transphobic… it’s just a gargantuan cishet headache.

This isn’t something that only cishet people are doing, there are cis lesbians, cis gay men, and cis bi people who have been labelling themselves “super (insert sexual orientation)” and I’ve seen a couple of them on Tumblr already when I went digging in the tags for more information. Please, for your own safety and mental wellbeing, just block them immediately.

Although it is now rampant on TikTok and Twitter (I believe), “super straight” originated on 4chan and it is a gigantic Nazi dogwhistle in addition to being transphobic as fuck. Basically, the term can be abbreviated to “SS” which is also short for Schutzstaffel (a paramilitary organization under Hitler in Nazi Germany). The colours of the “super straight” flag are also the colours of a specific Nazi flag.

If you’re reading this post, or about the subject another thing you can do aside from spreading, blocking, educating yourself and deconstructing biases, etc., etc., is donate to Trans people or Trans mutual aid funds if you’re able.

Examples like The Okra Project, the Trans Women of Colour Collective, the BlkTransFutures collective, Black and Pink, the FTEF, the Black Trans Travel Fund, the BFTA collective, the LGBTQ Freedom Fund,  or the Marsha P. Johnson Institute.

These are literally only some of the available options out there. There’s also different transition funds and donation lists around Tumblr that are organised by trans people (tpoc specially) to help each other and that you can donate, too.

Transphobia isn’t just TERFs outing themselves as Nazis once again, transphobia is also the unsustantiability of trans life by altering the conditions which would otherwise allow us to live — specially of trans people of colour.

This is also a time for standing with Jewish trans people, listening to them, and learning from them and standing by them. I, personally, don’t know specific coalitions or groups where you can donate or find other ways to support them. Of course, I’ll personally keep looking, but if you have some, make them circulate.

Fanfic tends to be popular among certain types of neurodivergent people (aka people most likely to read excessively as a child, and have burnout as an adult) for the same reasons that we tend to hyperfixate–neurochemical signaling (I hope I’m using that phrase correctly). What I mean is, for people who are really dependent on changes in dopamine/serotonin/neurotransmitter levels, who have low levels or wonky neural reward systems (perhaps the most common types of neurodivergence)…people like us rely on dependable external sources of those neurochemicals. In order to function, we spend a lot of our free time trying to level out our brain chemistry using things that can reliably bring us a steady stream of joyful moments (rewards) without costing too much of the mental effort that is already in short supply. 

significantly: the investment of reading has to be balanced with a steady “return on investment”–and this return has to start fairly quickly. because again, we don’t have a lot of attention/energy to invest on tiring things. we have perpetual “low batteries” in that regard.

that doesn’t mean these stories are “simple,” or that they lack complexity or value–only that the reward has to come in short regular intervals, and it has to have a low “upfront cost.” which is why fanfic stories are so perfectly formulated for neurodivergent readers–they are often beautifully written, but skip a lot of the upfront costs (of introducing new characters, of world-building, of getting the audience emotionally connected to the story elements).

the nature of fanfiction is that the reader has a pre-existing relationship with this world and these characters. that–combined with the shorter average length of fics–means that fan fics very quickly start “rewarding” the reader in a way that traditional fiction struggles to. that’s not a bad thing! and maybe it’s something more traditionally published writers should be paying attention to.

What was it like growing up [in Montreal]?

It was fun. I miss the diversity of Montreal. Growing up, you could just go out and go into a park and then a bunch of people would reunite there without even telling each other and play a pickup soccer game or a pickup hockey game. Even sometimes now when I go into the city in the summers, I'm like oh man, I miss that. Because I'm not in the south side anymore. I miss being a child sometimes and living there. It's so fun. But honestly, I love everything about the city. It's such a diverse place. There's a Chinatown; there's just so much around Montreal, which is awesome.

What NHL players did you look up to as a kid?

Being from Montreal, I love watching P.K. Subban play. Just the fun that he has playing and how he is always outgoing - showing his personality and not being afraid of what people would think and just going out there and being himself - it's unbelievable. But growing up, I also watched a lot of Penguins games and my brother was a big fan of the Capitals. Seeing Kris (Letang) as a French player playing in the NHL and being that good after going through our path and all of that with junior hockey was inspiring. We played in the same midget organization, Collège Antoine-Girouard. I was sitting in my locker room in Midget AAA and I could see Kris' name tag on one of the lockers there. We have basically been through the same path. He is of course somebody I was really looking forward to playing with, and it's amazing that I get to do that right now.

I think you might be our first player that's actually on TikTok. And I have to ask how long it took you to learn that dance you do with your mom [pictured above], which was adorable. Will we be seeing any more videos from you in the future?

I actually told my mom on Mother's Day, 'okay, Mother, we're learning a dance.' I taught her all the moves. My parents actually big dancers. They go to salsa classes in Montreal on a Tuesday from like 9-11. On a Sunday, it's dancing in the living room in the Joseph family house with the music blasting. My dad would grab my mom and just start dancing and my brother and I were looking at each other like, well, I guess they still love to dance (laughs). We all love to dance. I did a couple for my brother's TikTok page, too. Hopefully I can keep getting out of my comfort zone and post a little bit more.

Can you take us through the story of how you first found out you had been traded to the Penguins organization, and just what your experience has been like so far through your rookie season?

It's actually a funny story, I heard about it coming back from my Arizona development camp. I got a bunch of Penguins emoji texts and I think it's actually (Nathan) Legare who texted me first. I was like, why are people sending these Penguins emojis to me? (Laughs).

He admires Serena Williams, plays too many video games (his own admission), and is a passionate golfer (he should hit the links with Sid sometime)! He prefers hip hop, rap and EDM but learned to love country after playing in the Maritimes in juniors.

He's also the anti-Sidney Crosby in that he loves a bunch of social media platforms and is on several of them, and that he's deliberately trying not to develop a superstition or gameday routine.
