i'm trying to organize my thoughts on this.
i struggle to have any sympathy for people who use ai for fanwork. i also think these witch hunts are giving people an “ethical” excuse to be mean. i think we’ve let consumerism and capitalism infect fandom, and this is the inevitable result. i think the erosion of fandom as a community opened the door for this, but these people made the deliberate choice to step through it. i think the why matters and should be the focus of the conversation, but i also think it's equally important that we don't let the reasons excuse or normalize the actions.
i think the relentless call outs and the immediate memeification of everything, the fics and authors who use ai becoming running mean girl jokes, is only furthering the degradation of fandom, and creates a space that feels unsafe for someone new to create without the crutch of ai. i can empathize with people not being sure how to form connections other than through producing content people will talk about. the root problem is that everyone is hungry for community, but we've lost sight of what that means and how to build it.
i don't think i can find any sympathy for the people who loudly professed to be against AI and used it anyway, or those who doubled down after being called out months ago and wrote treatises about being victimized. that's deliberate deception and manipulation and cannot be excused or enabled.
i'm conflicted, all of my thoughts are contradictory, but i guess that's human. and i guess if i have any clear stance it's that i think the only productive way to approach this issue is as humans capable of nuance and not moral litigators. our focus needs to be on working the problem, not meting out punishment.

2009 Pittsburgh Penguins Playoff Masterlist
hi all! seeing some interesting from my friends/mutuals about where me and some other friends are watching the old games from the pens' 2009 cup run, so i thought i'd compile a list for you below! i am missing 3-4 games, but i am sure there are some more creative ways of finding them if you're so inclined. :)
links + rounds are below the cut. please feel free to reblog and share with credit!
thinking more on Kit's wonderful post and just feeling a well of empathy for anyone who wants so badly to be part of a community, to be seen as someone with good ideas and talent and the ability to contribute around the media they love so much, but also feels scared or untalented or unsafe to be an amateur on a stage that—post-2020—feels so much bigger than it used to, with so many eyes on it. it's so easy to imagine (or remember!) being in that person's shoes. I want nothing more than for a space to feel open and free to amateur, unpolished exploration. fic isn't perfect and that's why we write it.

i think if you’re feeling a certain kind of way and you know why you’re feeling it & you’ve done everything you can about the problem causing the feeling for the time being you should be able to go to your guardian angel and smile beatifically and say “i’ve done my feelings homework” and they smile beatifically back at you and say “alright my child” and they tap you on the head and you feel an immense sense of peace that washes through you and escapes as light from your fingertips and then you feel normal again
we must not let ourselves fall into despair about politics but oh my god. ohhhh my god.
post 2009 cup win interview
a penguins win makes a happy sid!
i think there’s a disconnect in fandom spaces between the general fan attitude of “i want more fic all the time with the exact concepts i’m interested in executed exactly the way i think is best and i want it to be 100k words and i want 25 chapters and i want a new chapter every day” and then also “i can’t believe the writers i was treating like a machine to create the art i want to consume as if it came off an assembly line used a machine to do it :/ who could ever do this” and like yeah obviously not everyone is in that first group but it’s an extremely pervasive attitude in newer, younger, popular fandoms. i don’t think it’s an “excuse” to use AI but i think the attitudes and environment that create that also create authors who feel they have to use AI to keep up with demand or authors who feel that their work is being consumed as factory-line commodities so why bother putting in effort? everyone wants fast food. everyone wants shein. if you want to be in an environment where art is created by artists the environment needs to be one that values art and creation and the process rather than just end results and numbers.
