like were I to go out and find a dog right now to care for and call my own, I know I'd have to do my utmost best to make sure that dog lived the best possible life it could. that's a high commitment to me. the training, the food, the supplies, the time spent making sure they had adequate stimulation and exercise. I'm really keenly aware of the ways we sort of let our beloved family dog down. he lived a very happy, very long life, but we didn't socialize him enough with other dogs, nor acclimatize him to veterinary care, nor really train him as much as we could-should have (though he sort of lived by the whims of his prey drive, lol. he was some percentage terrier, so...)

I dunno. maybe I'm succumbing to the fear of needing to be perfect instead of good but I feel like pet ownership isn't something I would be okay with half-assing. especially since it's not like I have kids to take care of. but, also, living alone means bearing the burden of that care all on myself. in summary: I would hold myself to an impossibly high standard were I to get a dog, and that is why I don't have one, which is sad because I love them, but it would blow up my life. also my apartment doesn't allow them and frankly I like to travel too much for it to be a smart decision anyways. thank you for coming to this diary entry.
