It might sound a little bit naive but as a very very strong opponent of ai i dont use it like at all and kinda shame people whom i know personally who admit to use it for basically any reason. My biggest ick with ai is copyeights. But also i have no clue when author uses ai for a fic and i probably wanna believe in authors i like that they have integrity and same ethical believe in ai matter as me
oh, trust me, if you scroll through my archive for the last few months and throw a rock, you'll probably hit a post complaining about AI. in my social circles it's incredibly gauche to admit to using AI, and unfortunately my professional life has been hit hard by the "use AI or die" mentality, so I've been in the unpleasant "I hate this but have to do it for work" morass, which blows.
insofar as AI in fic goes: of course you want to believe authors are actually writing what they're purporting to write. unfortunately, there's not going to be an obvious "tell" if an author's using AI. witchhunting someone for abusing em dashes means you'd have to go after half of active fic authors—myself included lol—and I think at this point most accusations that are getting slung around have concrete evidence, like prompts being left in the body of the fic (which... lol. yeah go ahead use the slop machine to generate your story and then DON'T REREAD IT, I GUESS. deeply stupid).
don't go into fic fearing if it's been written with AI; it's just going to lead to paranoia and the lessening of your enjoyment of reading fic. there's still enough social shaming and pressure to disincentivize people from using LLMs to "write" for them.
