They cheer.

Wait … cheer?

Fenrir slows, confused. He smells no fear, senses no rage. This is … a very strange army.

The first hand—weaponless!—reaches for him; he tenses, ready to tear the offending limb to shreds, and lets out a high little yippy whine when it pats him about the ears.

Immediately the noise is reproduced by some four or five of the nearest humans; he smells excitement; more hands are patting him.

It’s nice.

The humans crowd around him, patting him and scritching him and shuffling around to give others a chance. Voices coo, and make puppy noises, and someone catches just the right spot and he cocks his leg and scratches himself, drawing a multitude of oohs and ahhs and cheers and squees.

At some point, his hunger awakens at the scent of burnt flesh; a human has brought him what he later learns is a hot dog; he swallows it in one bite, to more cheering, and looks around hopefully for more.

It is not long before more is bought: steaks and Big Macs and bacon; it seems like much of the group has brought him a snack of some kind and was hoping for a chance to give it to him.

Is this some psychological warfare, he wonders, designed to undermine his confidence and remind him that he is nothing more than a monster who needs to be chained? 

“Who’s a good boy, huh, huh?” “Who’s my good boy?” “

And then one of them answers the question for him.

“You are!”

‘Me?’ he thinks. But if there was any doubt, she confirms it.

“You are, yes you are.”

Welp, I am approximately eleventy MILLION years late to the “make Rey’s bracer” party, but here it is!

Me being an obsessive perfectionist, it took the better part of a day to design the pattern – I even had the McCall’s pattern for a jumping-off point, but that turned out to be terrible, like, the layers were badly proportioned, and the smallest it could fit was a 9″ wrist, what the hell, and it wasn’t adjustable at all. I went through about six different paper patterns and three rejected leather prototypes before I settled on  an acceptable final version.

But good news! Now that all that’s out of the way, it turns out they are really quick to make, and I am pleased to be able to offer them for a cool $25 a pop, shipping out basically overnight. They are, in the words of the housemate I was testing them on, “super comfortable!” and will adjust to fit wrists anywhere between 6″-10″. (It’s also reversible, as you can see in the pictures above, which is kind of nifty.)

but it didn’t stop there. at the next party they threw to celebrate one of their latest finds, some museum-y banquet idk I was 13, I was going to show up. I was going to show up and make eye contact with them one at a time from across the room and they were going to lose their goddamn minds and then before the volturi could catch wind i was gonna be back in the ocean. how could they find me?

Sounds like we live in a police state where the rich tax the poor not to feed or protect them but to fund programs and legislature that defunds their resources and encourages them to die. The rich get richer and the middle class shrinks and suffocates while the entire country falls apart because corporate power greed refuses to see the consequences of their actions.

“I think it’s very uncommon in the First World. This is not a sight that one normally sees. I’d have to say that I haven’t seen this,” Philip Alston, the U.N.’s Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, told Connor Sheets of AL.comearlier this week as they toured a community in Butler County where “raw sewage flows from homes through exposed PVC pipes and into open trenches and pits.”

“Some might ask why a U.N. Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights would visit a country as rich as the United States,“ Alston said. “But despite great wealth in the U.S., there also exists great poverty and inequality.”

Alston also pointed out that the U.S. “has been very keen” on other countries being investigated by the U.N. for civil and human rights issues. “Now, it’s the turn to look at what’s going on in the U.S.,” Alston said. “There are pretty extreme levels of poverty in the United States given the wealth of the country. And that does have significant human rights implications.”

“The idea of human rights is that people have basic dignity and that it’s the role of the government—yes, the government!—to ensure that no one falls below the decent level,” he said. “Civilized society doesn’t say for people to go and make it on your own and if you can’t, bad luck.””

Bonus:

Hamlet is genre savvy. Hamlet knows how Tragedies work, and he’s not going to rush in and get stabby without making absolutely certain he’s got all the facts.

Except once he thinks he has all the facts – once he’s certain that it really is the ghost of his father and Claudius really did kill him, he rushes in and stabs the wrong guy, which starts a domino line of deaths and gets Laertes embroiled in his own revenge tragedy and ultimately results in the deaths of nearly every character other than Horatio.

“As an Asian Pacific Islander, representation matters. Seeing a character that resembles me in appearance and culture inspired me to pursue portraying Maui. When I first saw the marketing for Moana, I instantly felt a connection to Maui, and I just knew that with my craftsmanship skills and performance abilities, I’d be able to breathe life into this character.

I spent months searching for stretch fabric that matches my skin tone as close as possible, with respect to adapting Maui to me, rather than putting on a cultural costume. I spent over 50 hours meticulously hand-inking all of the tattoos based on the designs in the book The Art of Moana, using fabric inks. I sewed two wigs together to create Maui’s voluminous hair, and used natural clay and twine to replicate his bone necklace. His magic fish hook took over 30 hours of work, from foam fabrication, carving and painting. To create that Disney magic, I learned to program and wire around 1,000 lights through Arduino to give Maui’s hook that powerful glow. I source and painted the leaves and sewed them with my Singer Heavy Duty sewing machine.

The response from Disney fans of all ages has been incredible, with parents Skyping their children and having me sing “You’re Welcome” to them. To be able to take folks out of the ordinary and have them experience the extraordinary is very fun. To compete in the Crown Championships of Cosplay, and be recognized with a 2nd Place win by a panel of special effects artists and industry figures simply topped off the experience.

Cosplay is a blend of science and art, and being able to develop my craftsmanship skills and partner them with my performance abilities creates a magical experience. I thrive in these little pockets of shared sunshine where we can step outside of our ordinary lives and create the world we’ve imagined. In addition, being a plus-size cosplayer has encouraged many to be more body-positive and accepting of themselves and others.“
