As a disabled person: a world with no modern tech, no modern medicine, no electricity, and no single-use plastics is a world that cannot keep a great many disabled people alive
Disabled people have always been a part of humanity, and we always will be
And if an imagined future doesn't involve keeping us alive, I want no part of it
This is why we need to develop direct plastic recycling or plastic bio recycling via organisms that eat it instead of just never making plastic again. We need to actually figure out how to break it down so that it can be sustainable, so that disabled people donāt have to die in order for our planet to not go extinct or have a disaster. (Obviously Iām not suggesting to harm anyone that would be unintelligent and homicidal. Iām saying we need to force plastic to work.) All disabled people deserve to live no matter what their disability requires to stay alive.
Edit: Fixed my words from slang to more accurate descriptive words.
Thank you!!!
Exactly.
We need to make our technology to work for people, not sacrifice more disabled people at the altar of profit and convenience.
Ecofascism (e.g., saying that we need to let people die in order to save the planet) is still fascism for a reason.
And as you said: "All disabled people deserve to live no matter what their disability requires to stay alive."
I don't care if an individual disabled person's care costs a million dollars. (Which, thanks to the horrific state of United States health care, for some people, it does, in the long-term.) Every single disabled person deserves to live. Every single person has the right to life. Period.
Re: Some of the tags,
No, unfortunately plastic cannot all safely (for many disabled people) be replaced with any particular plastic alternative. At least for the foreseeable future.
This is because most organic things, such as bamboo and fibers and wood, are porous - and therefore physically impossible to medically sanitize
This is also because organic substances are, by nature, very frequently capable of reacting chemically with things in human bodies, because human bodies are also organic. (Organic in this sense doesn't refer to food, here; it means "of, relating to, or derived from living organisms". via Merriam-Webster online dictionary, Sense 2a)
Also most alternative plastics are just plastics with like 5% bamboo fiber or whatever, but that's like five whole other posts
The story of Cats is that in the 1930s, the famous poet T.S. Eliot wrote a book of cutesy little cat-themed poems for his godchildren
And then 40 years later, Andrew Lloyd Webber found a lost cat poem that T.S. Eliot had cut from the cat book for being too sad for children, and ALW was like āwoahhh. A catā¦.thatās sad. Thatās deep, man. I wanna make a musical out of thisā
So the producer assigned to the project was like āokay, I guess you could maybe read these cat poems as a satire of 1930s British society? We could probably do something sort of interesting with that, Iām thinking a cast of about 5 andāā
And ALW was like āno. Forget the satire. Also I want a cast of dozens and the most advanced special effects technology ever seen on stage. Iāve taken out a second mortgage on my house to fund thisā
And the producer was like āwhā youā whā do you even have. a plotā
So ALW got a bunch of actors and writers and artists together and they holed up and did cocaine workshopped for 5 weeks, and at the end of it they emerged and said āthe plot is that a bunch of cats are having a dance contest for the right to take a ufo to cat heaven :)ā
and then it made 2 billion dollars.
You know how the best genre of rock song is āThereās a Wizardā? CATS is good because itās two and a half hours straight of āThereās a Catā, which shares a lot of the same musical DNA.
Though curiously, the āThereās a Cat who is a Wizardā song is actually the worst one in the whole play. Itās not great on its own, but itās REALLY not done any favors by the song right before it, āThereās a Cat Who Has Done Every Crime Ever And Everyone Is At Least A Little Horny For Him.ā
i looovveee the scale differences of how big oakhurst feels depending on if you're watching a vampire or a human, when watching the vampires everything feels so compact and claustrophobic, taking hardly a minute to get from one end of the map to the other, simply lunging over cliffs and flying over forests, the characters themselves complaining about too little space and wanting to stretch their wings and then you watch a human pov and everything feels so huge, they spend days out in the wilderness at a time because thats simply how long it takes to get from one place to another, the forests thick and each of them getting lost despite being in groups of SIX at times, what is for the vampires a quick detour is a day long trek for the humans and it adds so well to the immersion and worldbuilding, i love it!!
nodding my head to show that i approve of all the shitty things this character has done because i'm a bad person

awesome picture how do i move on now from this moment
look, i work at a morgue, i get to see every day how withered and small bodies can get when someone was sick. itās awful. do you know how bone-thin a leg can get. or how a stomach really looks beneath the ribs when itās wasted away. the way peopleās eyes and cheeks press in to their skull like theyāre clinging on for dear life. they died like that, and you want to try and sell me a lie, a pill, a miracle cure thatāll make me live in that state? thatāll make my friends look like that, my family, the people i love? to see corpses in them?
this job makes me appreciate all the more bodies lived in and well-loved. please eat that second serving. please give yourself treats as much as you want. life is not long enough to suffer through it. youāll be plenty skinny when youāre dead.
actually I think you should be normal about ordinary citizens of authoritarian countries and yes that applies even to that country you're thinking of right now
"but they support [dictator] and [violent action]!" okay is it possible that a combination of propaganda, election rigging, and authoritarian crackdowns on dissent could lead a population to look like it supports something most people would find distasteful under more reasonable circumstances
deriding things as performative is anti third space
im sitting on a patio at my favorite cafe rn and im hand stitching them hem of a dress im working on. and i can see why someone would say im being performative by working on something like this in a public space. but frankly theres no element of that. i just want to work somewhere that isnt my apartment. i want to be in public, i wanna chat with strangers, i wanna see the world. itās nice to hang out somewhere that isnt my home!
what i mean is when you say people are being performative you discourage them from doing shit they love in public. and thats no way to foster the world we want to see.

wonderful scene that i think is in the spirit of this blog, from @somesecretpieās webcomic Broccoli Soup! (source chapter: āIdealā)
depressed kids in the media: I donāt wanna go to therapy! I donāt need help! Iām not some specimen for you to dissect!
me, rollin up to my therapistās office and collapsing in relief: what is UP my homeboy I fuckin missed you,, hope ur ready to hear some Bull Shit that fuckin happened to me this week
families of depressed kids in media: okay sweetie weāve researched depression for ten hours straight and signed you up for therapy and re-arranged your school schedule to be less stressful
actual parents of depressed kids: look i get youāre sad but someones gotta do the goddamn dishes stop being lazy get up. why didnāt you go to school today, whatās wrong with you, youāre such a burden on this family.
Therapists in the media: *understanding head tilt*
My real live therapist whom I adore: Natalie, that is the DUMBEST thing Iāve ever heard.
Therapists in Media: Lets do some art therapy and be really quiet while we talk about your feelings :)))))) also Iām prescribing you 500 different medicines
My therapist Brian who I love to death: Jack, I think your first problem is you stay up too late looking at memes, so letās try taking a nap
My real life therapist: Okay, before we start, I found this hilarious video I know youād love.
Therapist in media: serious face the whole time
My therapist: *laughs awkwardly*
therapists in media: refined, cultured, poised,Ā āIām afraid I havenāt [heard of the nerdy thing their patient just referenced]ā
my old therapist derek, from across the reception area, seeing me for the first time after the summer of 2015: HEY DID YOU SEE AGE OF ULTRON?? IT SUCKED, RIGHT???
my current therapist ian, in our very first appointment: do you like star wars? anxiety is like the force, it can consume you, or you can learn to keep it in balance⦠youāre my padawan now
Actual things my therapist has told me:
āYouāre bassicly a glorified sad lizard.ā (It makes sense with context)
āDamn girl you need to get your shit together.ā
āGo home and cry. Stop drinking in bathtubs. Eat something that isnāt bleach or memes.ā
Iāll add more tomorrow after I see her again.
i saw this post earlier about therapists and it reminded me of my old therapist paul, who in my opinion is one of the greatest men alive and who did not put up with my bullshit for even one second
anyway i go in to see paul one week in the summer of 2016, and iām doing my usual bullshit which consists of me talking shit about myself, and paul is staring at me, and then he cuts me off and says that heās got a new tool for helping people recognize when theyāre using negative language, and gets up and goes over to his desk
and iām like alright hit me with that sweet sweet self-help article my man, because iām a linguistic learner and whenever paulās like here i have a tool for you to use itās pretty much always an article or a book or something
paul opens a drawer, takes something out, and turns back around.Ā i stare.
i say, paul.
is that a nerf gun.
yeah, says paul.
i say, are you gonna shoot me with a nerf gun in this professional setting.
he happily informs me that thatās really up to me, isnāt it. and sits back down. and gestures, like, go ahead, what were you saying?
and i squint suspiciously and start back up about how iām having too much anxiety to leave the house to run errands, like it was a miracle to even get here, like iāve forgone getting groceries for the past week and thatās so stupid, what a stupid issue, iām an idiot, how could iā
a foam dart hits me in the leg.
i go, hey! because my therapist just shot me in the leg. paul blinks at me placidly and raises an eyebrow. i squint again.
i say, slowly, itāsā not a stupid issue, iām not stupid, but itās frustrating me and i donāt want it to be a problem iām having.
no dart this time. okay. sweet.
so the rest of the hour passes with me intermittently getting nailed with tiny foam darts and then swearing and then fixing my language and, wouldnāt you know it, i start liking myself a little more by the end of the session, which is mildly infuriating because paul can tell and heās very smug about itĀ
anyway i leave his office and the lady having the next appointment walks in and i hear whatās all over the floor? and paul very seriously says cognitive behavioral therapy tools.
please read this even if you're not indian. especially if you're not indian.
you've seen the jokes. india is "dirty", indians are "everywhere", why don't they fix their own country. ok. let me tell you why, and what's happening right now while nobody's watching.
first, the history you skipped: britain ruled india for two centuries and drained it. economist utsa patnaik's research estimates around $45 trillion in today's money was taken. the india that got independence in 1947 was one of the poorest countries on earth. every "why is india like this" question starts there. you don't get to profit off a robbery and then mock the crime scene.
now, what's happening RIGHT NOW:
in may the question paper for NEET leaked. that's the national medical entrance exam. over 2.2 million students took it. cancelled. years of studying, families' savings poured into coaching, gone overnight because someone sold the paper. students died by suicide after. these were kids who wanted to be doctors.
and out of that came a protest movement. a gen z group called the cockroach janta party, started by a 30 year old named abhijeet dipke, got 22 million instagram followers within DAYS. they've been doing a sit-in at jantar mantar in delhi demanding education minister dharmendra pradhan resign.
and then there's sonam wangchuk. if you've watched 3 idiots, he's the real engineer the character was based on. built solar schools in ladakh. invented ice stupas so himalayan villages have water. spent his whole life on education. he's 59 and he's been on hunger strike for 17+ days now. reporters went to see him this week and he was too weak to talk. and the troll armies are calling him "anti national" and "foreign funded". a man starving himself for other people's children. that's the thing here, anyone who asks a question is suddenly a traitor.
it's not one incident, it's everywhere you look:
⢠infrastructure worth thousands of crores failing within months of the ribbon cutting. tunnels collapsing in regions where heavy rain is a guarantee, not a surprise.
⢠youth unemployment near 10% for ages 15 to 29, 13.6% in cities. in a country of 1.42 billion where more than half the population is young.
⢠only about the top 3% of indians earn above 10 lakh a year. meanwhile billionaire wealth keeps ballooning and the headlines celebrate it.
⢠manipur burned for over two years. an ethnic conflict, tens of thousands displaced, and the prime minister barely said the word manipur while it happened.
⢠journalists raided. critics' houses bulldozed. activists sitting in jail for years without trial under laws like UAPA. our press freedom ranking has cratered.
⢠even the petrol is a fight now, ethanol blending pushed through while drivers complain about their engines and get no straight answers.
and through all of it, the PM, who came to power on religious polarisation (americans, sound familiar?), travels abroad for photo ops and has not held one single open press conference in over a decade. not one.
what i'm asking:
if you're not indian: share this. our media mostly won't cover any of it because the big outlets are owned by the same billionaires the government serves. the only reason wangchuk's fast is getting any coverage is people refusing to look away.
if you ARE indian: speak up even if you're comfortable. especially if you're comfortable. join the protests. add to this, correct me, translate it. staying quiet is a choice when nothing in this post touches your life.
india is not "dirty". india was robbed, and it's being robbed again, from the inside this time. but it's also the country where a 59 year old will starve for strangers' kids and 22 million young people will rally behind a party literally named after cockroaches, because cockroaches survive everything.
we can still save her. but only loudly.
reblog. share. don't scroll past.
for the record im not technially 100% anti-AI, in the sense that its a broad category of tech being lumped under one umbrella term so it feels over-zealous to say i hate all of it all the time forever. but i also think trying to discuss what it actually IS good for is difficult right now when i cant take one step without something trying to convince me to use chatgpt to summarize my life and speed up my hobbies and turn my friends into chatbots and optimize my life into oblivion. i am certain there is nuance to the topic but can we stop cramming the square peg into the round hole before you start trying to sell me on the legitimate benefits of the square peg. please.
Neural Nets have existed for decades and are genuinely useful. It's a form of AI that recognizes patterns, and can do stuff like identify cancer cells, tell whether an egg is fertilized or not, detect fraud, and optimize routes.
Those are Expert Systems, tuned to do exactly one thing. If you (say) ask a medical expert system a question about financial law, it's useless. The autopilot that flies a 787 has no idea how to drive a truck on the freeway. A Coulter Counter is excellent at identifying lymphocytes in a blood sample but can't predict the next card in a blackjack game.
And so on.
The problem with so-called generalized AI (AGI) is that we don't have that yet. It doesn't exist. It MIGHT some day, but AGI has been "10 years away" since the 1980s. The goals keep moving as we learn more about how people and machines process data.
But the current crop of AI techbros have been selling generative Large Language Model AI (LLM) as AGI because generative systems do a good job of faking it. There's no actual thought going on, merely the illusion of thought via predicting the next word in a sentence accurately.
If you let a human toddler listen to 800 hours of YouTube car influencer videos, that toddler might end up sounding like a car influencer. They'd parrot horsepower numbers and 0 to 60 times, mention EV range and MSRP numbers.
But they wouldn't understand any of it.
That's ChatGPT.
And yeah, it's worse than useless because it doesn't even know when it's lying or hallucinating. It just babbles convincingly until you stop it.
But for techbros to make money selling that as "AI"? It's the perfect scam, especially if you don't understand how it works.
I fucking hate it.
