A few months ago, I asked a man in the hospital waiting room - in the ENT department, for extra audacity points - if he could please use headphones, and he said 'no, I don't have any,' and when I said 'well, no-one else here wants to hear it,' he just shrugged and said 'but I do.' He kept listening to it without even turning it down, and everyone else just rolled their eyes and muttered about what a prick he was. A middle-aged woman once told me that I needed to 'mind my own business' for asking her just to turn it down, because she was listening to it at full volume, and then she proceeded to loudly bitch about my appearance with her daughter for a solid 5 minutes, interspersed with direct suggestions that I should sincerely consider fucking off, and it was only when everyone else in the train carriage confirmed that they, too, had been pissed off by her behaviour that she stopped yelling at me and sat back in her seat with a face like a smacked arse. And once, I asked a bunch of teenagers on the train if they could turn it down, and they started filming me and told me they'd make me 'TikTok famous', which frankly excited me in the moment, but has since sorely disappointed me because I've yet to become a household name.

Shane comes out of the closet sometime after Scott does, and in some random, lighthearted interview, they ask him what he's looking for in a man. And Shane's just, off-hand like, "Well, he'd have to have at least one Stanley Cup. Obviously." And when he gets a good reaction from that, he keeps going, like "Needs to be amazing at hockey. Meanwhile Ilya's living the kind of domestic fantasy with his man that he didn't think they were going to get until retirement. For the first time ever most days he can truly pretend that he and Shane are the only people in the world. Sometimes David and Yuna come over for dinner because they are also isolating at their cottage. But most of the time it's just endless hours of just the two of them and neither of them could be happier. Their biggest decision every day is when and where to fuck. Some people are getting into sourdough – Shane and Ilya have committed to learning one new sexual position every day.

They aren’t disincentivized to work. None of those things are morally bad or wrong, but they are the most common arguments against UBI: “MEEEHHHHH WE CAN’T GIVE PEOPLE FREE MONEY THEY WON’T WORK AND THEY’LL BUY DRUUUUUGS!” Take a wild guess who is most often accused of spending money on drugs, scratchers and jewelry. The mythical “welfare queen” we were all told to hate is a racist stereotype based on a handful of anecdotes during Reagan’s presidency and perpetuated by conservative white people who can’t handle the concept of sharing resources with someone who might be a little poorer, sicker, or darker than they are. Using the term “welfare queen” is a good indicator to me that they watch Fox “News” every day and haven’t had a thought of their own since the Gulf War.
