Uninstalling Tumblr, difficult choice but the endless scroll does not help my ADHD and I'm getting too behind on uni stuff. Still might check in on my desktop dash from time to time, but it's time to say goodbye to daily Tumblr doomscrolling so I can actually get my degree :P

i thought my laptop was on its last leg because it was running at six billion degrees and using 100% disk space at all times and then i turned off shadows and some other windows effects and it was immediately cured. i just did the same to my roommate's computer and its performance issues were also immediately cured. okay. i guess.
so i guess if you have creaky freezy windows 10/11 try searching "advanced system settings", go to performance settings, and uncheck "show shadows under windows" and anything else you don't want. hope that helps someone else.
hey this is apparently helping a lot of people! adding that on top of this you can also go to settings > personalization > colors and turn off transparency to also boost performance. this wasn't the Big Fix for me but might as well do that too if you're trying to optimize.

Ok I know we joke about this but I just went to the settings and first clicked "adjust for best performance" and then re-checked only 1 box:

My computer was running hot before I turned everything off; the office I'm in is very warm, I could feel the heat of my CPU through the keyboard. The fans were going, not as loud as they usually get, but they were still blasting.
Y'all.
I can barely feel the warmth through the keyboard now. It's been like 2 minutes. The fan is nearly silent.
Click the Windows key and start typing "System settings", and "View Advanced system settings" will pop up. Then click "Settings" under Performance:
Then you'll see this:
TURN IT ALL OFF.
I turned "Show window contents while dragging" and then turned that off again. It's up to you.
My computer is so quiet and reasonably-temperatured now and I barely notice a difference in utility, why is windows like this

The second best thing you can do for a Win10 computer is turn off whatever unnecessary services it's decided it needs to run in the background always. Some services it does need, but others are useless. Here's an article that goes into step by steps.
10AppsManager lets you uninstall bloatware. Winaero Tweaker lets you disable crap like Cortana/Copilot, ads, telemetry, internet search results when you search from the taskbar, and all kinds of other stuff, plus it gives you lots of other little options that are just nice to have (like, it can restore the old MS Paint program in place of Paint 3D). Both are totally free.
Oh, and check your startup programs in the Task Manager tab to make sure your computer isn't automatically starting eight million programs every time it boots. But I think people mostly know about that. (Unless this is me going "they only know one or two feldspars... and quartz of course.")
The first best thing you can do for a Windows computer is install Linux Mint. But some of us do need a few pesky Windows-specific programs. Bleh. Still, if you're up for a project, you can have both (and it's awesome). Here's an article about setting up a dual boot Windows/Mint system.

PowerShell Method (Actually Uninstalls CoPilot)
This will fully uninstall CoPilot from your system, instead of disabling via group policy or registry entries. Even if Microsoft pushes an update that reinstalls it later, this method will still work to remove it again!
Run PowerShell as Administrator
Paste: Get-AppxPackage *CoPilot* -AllUsers | Remove-AppPackage -AllUsers
Press Enter (There will not be any output if it is successfully removed)
Reboot

I kinda hate how buying anything accessable costs more. My main experience with this is as a (mostly) able bodied person is the fact that food formulated for people with allergens costs more. Like gluten free stuff is so expensive. I didn't choose to have a body that hates wheat. I don't even have coeliac disease, but I still require mostly gluten free food or my body will be in a severe amount of pain. Same with dairy products, when the milk alternatives also get upcharged everywhere. It's so dumb.
I know it gets worse the more disabled you are, too. Even the shittiest wheelchair is hundreds of dollars. Accessibility shouldn't come at a cost. Not to be radical or anything, but I don't think anything required for a comfortable life should cost anything. Luxury stuff maybe. But not basic stuff to make people's lives less painful to live.
I don't know if I'm making much sense, I'm just tired.
Hot take: there is no valid reason that official government ID should have either a sec or gender marker on it. First name, last name, dob + up to date image will suffice. Address, if relevant.

Hospital spoilers btw: blood isn't sorted by sex, it's sorted by type. The sex of the blood donor doesn't factor in at all when receiving a transfusion, and you will not be harmed by receiving blood from a donor whose sex is different than yours. Saying this because it's another misconception that I've heard.
if you're unconscious at the hospital and they need to operate and insert a catheter in your urethra, don't worry! they'll figure out if you have a penis or a vagina without having to look at a laminated card in your wallet
And if you have ambiguous or surgically modified genitals, they'll find your urethra anyway!
Just checked my driver's licence (Australian). It doesn't have a gender marker. My passport DOES, but it's pretty easy to get a passport with your preferred gender here (and gender X is a valid option). Basically no, our ID doesn't have a gender marker based on biological sex, and somehow the hospital system hasn't exploded yet. And whilst legally changing your gender does cost money (I think I paid $115?) they issue you with a brand new birth certificate that does not indicate the former name or gender. (That may just be a "my state" thing though)

And definitely don't do ctrl+v into the next google doc or whatever you open because then you will accidentally paste the entire article into a google doc or something!!!! I repeat DO NOT do this because it is piracy which is absolutely totally wrong!!!
Also do NOT append "12ft.io/" before a URL ! Typing an URL like this https://12ft.io/<URL> will redirect to a site that would break the display of the page by removing the paywall !
Honestly it's kind of prohibited to mash CTRL+P before some paywall windows can load in to get a PDF of the article. Really shouldn't be done tbh very dangerous🤷🏿♂️ ❌️
Another option that doesn’t require you to do it quickly is by opening inspect, disabling JavaScript (which will vary from browser to browser, just look it up for your browser), and then reloading the page.
It will let you read it most of the time, and it also works for websites like Delish if you want to cook something 💪👍✨

Ugh. Reminder again for Firefox users to visit your about:config page, search for the browser.ml.chat.enabled key, and set that to false:
If yours says true then double-click it until it reads false.
Doing that turns off the AI chatbot features in Firefox, but also the stupid new LLM tab-naming feature that's rolling out.
