PSA just so all of y’all know
The word scapegoat is referencing a literal goat. Back in the days of the temple, every Yom Kippur an actual goat that represented everyone’s sins would be sacrificed by way of throwing it off a cliff. The goat dies to absolve you of your sins, Jesus style except it happens every year. it is literally a scapegoat
And for all the supernatural fans, you may have noticed that many angels names have a pattern where their name ends in el. That’s because biblical angel names typically follow the pattern of (something) of god (אל is a name of god). Uriel (אוריאל) means light of god Raphael (רפאל) means healing of god michael (מיכאל) means who is like god. Azazel, however, whose name notably follows that pattern is a demon. So what gives???
Well the name of the aforementioned scapegoat ritual is Azazel (עזאזל). Az (עז) meaning goat and azel (אזל) meaning out of so literally the act of banishing the goat so Azazel’s name means the act of creating and killing the scapegoat. His name does not actually have god (אל) in it despite the English spelling making it seem like it does. His name is that of a ritual which is meant to absolve the Israelites of their sins through a sacrifice.
So the demon who got Sam addicted to demon blood (sin blood of sins) (literally absorbing sins) fating him to unleash Lucifer and be his designated host body and eventually die to reseal him (literally dying for our sins by falling into a pit) is named after the ritual of creating and sacrificing a scapegoat full of the nation’s sins by throwing it off a cliff
So yeah I think the writers may have put at least a modicum of thought into some of these names
the differences between alcohol, tobacco, and anything else in america is kind of absurd and it’s hard to wrap your head around without going kinda insane
you can drink alcoholic drinks in public if you want BUT ☝️ only in some places. you can smoke cigarettes almost fucking anywhere though, even though that makes the environment way worse for everyone around you. however you cannot smoke cannabis anywhere. you can’t even have it at all in a lot of places. having open containers (i.e. a bottle of liquor you’ve drank from before) of alcohol in your vehicle is illegal EVEN IF you’re sober as a nun. you can smoke in your car. everything has so much caffeine in it that sometimes a drink just hospitalizes or kills you. you can buy caffeine pills to stay awake at drugstores and gas stations. you need a drivers license to get decongestants and you have to jump through hoops and bark like a trained seal to get any kind of hrt or psychiatric medication. they sell cigs literally everywhere. they wreck your life and finances and make you smell horrid and give you cancer but a bunch of rich people are dumping so much money into keeping them legal that seemingly the only thing the government can do is “ehhh they give you cancer but we can’t BAN them.” cannabis has well-documented medical properties but old white people think smoking it makes you a satanist because of racist government propaganda. hell world

Hey artists, C. Spike Trotman, founder of Iron Circus Comics, just posted an invaluable thread on depicting different types of black hair. I’d do the thing where you screencap the whole thread and post it but it’s just too long (which is great because it’s a whole lot of useful information!) Give her a follow while you’re there.
Anyway, go check it out. I just wanted to save it and share it because I didn’t know how much I didn’t know!
This is an amazing resource, not only for artists, but for writers too! I love this!
{ID - tweet from @/Iron_Spike that reads, “Black Hair for Non-Black Artists: a Cheat Sheet Thread. Hi, folks! Just spur-of-the-moment decided to put together some reference for folks who want to draw/model black characters in their work, but arent confident they won’t make simple, obvious mistakes w/r/t black hair. END ID}
I noticed in the comments that some people can’t see the thread, so I took screenshots for y'all!
More will come in reblogs, since tumblr has an image limit

Replacing physical buttons and controls with touchscreens also means removing accessibility features. Physical buttons can be textured or have Braille and can be located by touch and don't need to be pressed with a bare finger. Touchscreens usually require precise taps and hand-eye coordination for the same task.
Many point-of-sale machines now are essentially just a smartphone with a card reader attached and the interface. The control layout can change at a moment's notice and there are no physical boundaries between buttons. With a keypad-style machine, the buttons are always in the same place and can be located by touch, especially since the middle button has a raised ridge on it.
Buttons can also be located by touch without activating them, which enables a "locate then press" style of interaction which is not possible on touchscreens, where even light touches will register as presses and the buttons must be located visually rather than by touch.
When elevator or door controls are replaced by touch screens, will existing accessibility features be preserved, or will some people no longer be able to use those controls?
Who is allowed to control the physical world, and who is making that decision?

I hate cigarettes so much I hate that smoking is becoming cool again I hate that we're becoming contrarian hipsters about this disgusting habit that has literally killed so many people and destroyed so many lives I'm so serious we need to become absolute killjoys about this again it's time to go 90s scolds on cigarettes until the scourge is wiped out entirely.
It's not even that they kill you. Lots of contrarian passively suicidal people hear that they kill you and they think "oh cool. Whatever."
They make your hands cold. They give you little asshole pucker wrinkles around your mouth. They kill you so fucking slow. Make it so your lungs hurt all the time. They make every cold a chest cold that takes months to go away. They suck your money out bit by bit, every day forever. Just be a little bit more poor forever until they kill you in fifty years. They kill you for fifty years. Just a little shorter of breath, just a little colder, heart beating a little too fast. And the longer you go, the harder it is to quit.
You're depressed and nicotine is an anti-depressant as well as a stimulant. It helps ease that crushing void in your soul just a little bit. Puts a little bit of energy in your steps. Until it doesn't. Until all you can think about is when your next smoke break is. Until you're sixty five and in the hospital because you need emergency surgery on an clogged artery and you're attempting suicide by willful medical neglect because getting the surgery that will save your life will mean not smoking a cigarette for three whole days.
every morning i can hear my neighbor outside smoking. i can hear him because he is coughing: raspy, dry, painful sounding hacking cough. he is outside before the sun comes up, sometimes twice between when i wake up (5am) and when i leave for work (6am). he is outside when it is 100 degrees and smoky, when it is negative 20, when it is soaking wet.
some days my coworker checks his phone over and over, waiting for direct deposit to hit so he can buy cigarettes. even if you never get sick, smoking takes your choices away. you have to go sit outside alone in the cold first thing in the morning. you have to spend the first $12 of your paycheck on another pack. and you smell gross the entire time.
WOAH just saw spiderman eating pizza on a roof

the handle of the jug being hollow so that some milk gets in it is genius because its a spot where they can just chill and not have to worry about fake social rituals and small talk
and with your help it can rack up 700k notes on tumblr in 2024
no tumblr this doesnt need tags im releasing it into the wild as god intended
Yeah okay, I'll rebark that!
i like seeing how many people cried real tears in the notes
Gets stuck in the past and makes a random village get way smarter and less violent in a generational sense because I keep smacking people over the head with a stick and telling them that it’s the devil’s metal whenever they try to use lead for something in my presence and there develops a very niche regionalized superstition that an angry warlock will jump out of a tree and beat the shit out of you if you touch lead with your bare hands
Gets excommunicated by the Catholic Church for telling people that they can banish the devil from their water if they boil it therefore saving hundreds of people from a cholera outbreak but I don’t care and keep trying to convince the locals to use soap more often
Meets another iseksied person in the far past and beats the shit out of them for participating in the slave trade and eating moldy bread
There is an isekai story exactly like this I will reblog with the title when I remember it.
It was Jin (written by Motoka Murakami). It’s not exactly an isekai, but it is good!
Internet synopsis: A modern Japanese neurosurgeon is thrown back in time to the samurai era, where he has to use low-tech methods to fight real historical epidemics like cholera.
I was too scared to watch edward scissorhands has a kid but I thought about how could a woman go through pregnancy with a fetus growing metal scissors hands it took years of theorizing, still without watching the movie, to even think that maybe he wasn’t born with scissor hands
maybe women are stronger than you think

This disability pride month I would like the community to understand that Sometimes wheelchairs aren’t freedom.
Sometimes using a wheelchair means you can no longer get to the places that used to be important to you, and not because of man-made inaccessibility. I have sat with someone as they cried because they could no longer visit the place they had scattered a loved one’s ashes because not even the most expensive wheelchair in the world could handle the terrain. As much as I wanted to, my wheelchair meant that I couldn’t position myself in a way that would allow me to give them a proper hug. In that moment, our wheelchairs felt more like heavy weights than freedom.
And sometimes wheelchairs are like the legs of someone who can walk but would maybe benefit from a wheelchair themselves. Sometimes wheelchairs are exhausting and painful and you’re counting down the time before you’re able to be lifted into bed. Sure, like painful legs, you can do more with them than without, but constantly performing gratitude for something that hurts you is exhausting. And again, not because you need a better wheelchair, but because those are the limits of your body and the technology that exists.
Yes it’s important to challenge the idea that wheelchairs are always a tragedy. And yes, there are lots of people who have a positive relationship with their chair. But for a lot of people, including me, the pressure to love your wheelchair and see it as freedom is painful and feels like it erases huge amounts of my experiences with disability.
