Help support the workers of Disability Rights Oregon in the face of unfair labor practices!

The leadership over at DRO has repeatedly engaged in union busting tactics in order to keep their wages for their staff incredibly low ($18/hr for a position requiring a degree in Portland, as an example!). They have repeatedly refused to meet the union at the bargaining table and are restricting staff's ability to advocate for themselves by banning staff from speaking to board members or attending board meetings!

The staff at DRO do indispensable work advocating for disabled people within the criminal justice system, by making sure their medical needs are met properly and with dignity.

The union is asking for folks to sign this petition to show further public support for their union and to put public pressure on the higher ups at DRO to engage in good faith with the union!

The eligible staff voted UNANIMOUSLY to form a union seven years ago. I'm disappointed to see the same management at DRO stalling on the SAME THINGS we demanded back then. The salary disparities have seemingly grown even wider. It helps to maintain that disparity when you layoff senior staff further up the pay scales, like they did back then! In solidarity!

I was putting together a list of how-to-make-trousers tutorials for a fellow fighter, and I thought it might be a useful resource for other folks. It’ll also be a resource for me, so I don’t have to go hunting for links every time I’m trying to help someone out. :)

Before we begin, remember:

If you’re going to be fighting in your pants, I highly recommend picking a pattern that includes a crotch gusset (like Nova’s Rus pants, or my basic pants with gusset), so you’ll have full range of motion. Nothing is sillier than ripping your trouser-crotch in the midst of battle!

Most of these patterns will work well in any “bottomweight” fabric. If you’re using linen, consider going up to a heavier 7 oz linen, so your pants will last longer.

This isn’t nearly a complete list of All the Pants, Ever: it’s just tutorials I’ve tried and liked. If you know of other great tutorials, let me know, and I’ll add them to the list! 

Some of these are based on medieval garments, some of these are more fanciful, and some of these are modern, but still useful for our purposes. Use what you like, and ignore the rest!

I would say that pressing the blue button is the correct choice in both circumstances

because a majority X% of people pressing the blue button always results in fewer people dying than a majority X% of people pressing the red button

I think it's also worth pointing out from a game theory perspective (like the mathematical discipline, not matpat)

that this entire hypothetical is basically just a reskinned version of the prisoner's dilemma

pressing the blue button corresponds to cooperating: a choice that requires some risk, but may result in minimum cost for all players

likewise, pressing the red button corresponds to defecting: a selfish choice that always benefits the player that takes it

what do you mean by "rational, i.e. not making decisions at random"?

this is a loadbearing condition you are inserting without elaboration, and it's a stipulation that is NOT present in the jigsaw version of the question. this condition completely changes the nature of the scenario and influences how people think about behaviors of the other participants in a major way.

the jigsaw people weren't decididng at random - they didn't flip a coin or roll dice. the jigsaw question is worded in a way that makes the reader feel like blue is what most people would pick, so that makes blue a safe bet, so they picked blue. they read the room and made a logical choice.

i think what you mean by "rational" is "people who refuse to read the room", as in people who treat the wording of the problem as information-free and decide in a vacuum. that's not neutral, that's a particular philosophical stage you're setting and that is why your version gives a different answer.
