Seeing the diminishment and erasure of the legacy of Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series occur in my actual lifetime is mind-boggling.

Research has revealed that, while rituals are universal across human cultures, the content and actions of those rituals vary widely even when they have the same intended purpose. Initially, scientists chose their dogs relatively arbitrarily. By the 1930s, however, most became convinced that someone, somewhere, needed to select a standard breed. It had been done with rats; why not with dogs? Crossbreeding experiments by embryologist Charles Rupert Stockard at first appeared promising, but their premature conclusion left the issue unresolved. Then, starting around 1939, work at Columbia University suggested the Irish terrier as a possible choice for centralized production instead. Yet terrier boosters faltered, interrupted by the arrival of World War II, and no institution could commit to hosting the much-yearned-for stock center for dogs. Instead, smaller projects such as the dog studies at Jackson Labs and at Cornell emerged, quietly redirecting scientific attention, by 1950, to the beagle—at precisely the moment the breed was in wider cultural ascent. While scientists agreed on certain traits for the ideal research dog, the chapter shows how quotidian familiarity, whether from hunting or pet ownership, was equally important.

I’m reading a book on biofeedback trainings right now and they talk about this. The words “try” or “need” add pressure to stuff. Sometimes switching from “I need to calm down” or “I’m trying to slow my breathing” to “I’m allowing myself to calm down a little more with each exhale” or “I’m giving myself permission to slow my breathing” can be more helpful. There’s a difference between “try to relax the muscle” and “allow the muscle to soften” that is significant enough that for some people it can totally change the outcome of a relaxation exercise.
