Seeing the diminishment and erasure of the legacy of Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series occur in my actual lifetime is mind-boggling.
You've got people out here making youtube videos about the legacy of dragons and dragonriding in fantasy fiction without talking about the dragonriding Grand Master of SFF herself Anne McCaffrey.
This isn't some obscure thing where I'm trying to promote someone who is only kind of known because of forgotten representation. Anne McCaffrey was A HOUSEHOLD NAME when I was a kid when it comes to fantasy literature. She's the first woman to win a Hugo and to win a Nebula. In 2002 there was a TV pilot filmed for Dragonriders of Pern.
Eragon, Temeraire, Toothless, and the dragons of Fourth Wing exist because these people grew up on the blueprint set by the Pern novels. Talking about dragons and not mentioning Pern is like talking about Orcs and not mentioning Lord of the Rings.
Y'all need to read your fucking classics before you go talking like an authority on a topic. Jesus Christ.
Added sound effects to this AMAZING animation by https://www.instagram.com/xabier.u/ with their permission⌠and I had a lot of fun doing it!

my first impression of the show
Studies show that engaging in ritualized behavior significantly improves outcomes on measures of grief and feelings of control, even when the person participating in the ritual has little or no belief in the ritualâs power. Just a reminder for no one in particular.
Research has revealed that, while rituals are universal across human cultures, the content and actions of those rituals vary widely even when they have the same intended purpose. This suggests that it is not the actions that matter, but that you are taking any action at all and naming it ritual. It can be an elaborate ritual with dozens of moving parts and participants, or it can be as simple as lighting a candle alone with the intent to remember someone.
The healing is in the doing.
I can never leave Tumblr because after years of sporadic therapy utterly failed to even approach the core of my problem some random tumblr user was like âI processed my trauma by writing a 10,000 word work of filthy fanfic eroticaâ and I was like âfuck it Iâve tried everything elseâ and now Iâm 17 chapters and 20,000 words deep into an unpublishable work of obscenity and after careful literary analysis with one of the Beloved Mutuals I have come to some Terrible Revelations about my childhood and may now continue the process of Healing. Where else am I supposed to get this kind of experience. Who does this. Why are we like this. Iâm never leaving. I love yâall.
oh dear god
I am speed running the stages of grief. Come explore this with me.
I WONDER WHY HEALTHCARE DATA IS SO LIMITED. HEY HAS ANYONE EVER THOUGHT ABOUT WHY WE DON'T HAVE COMPLETELY OPEN PLATFORMS FOR HEALTH DATA. AND WHY IT'S A BAD IDEA TO HAVE WRITE PRIVILEGES VIA SOME WEB INTERFACE TO MEDICAL RECORDS. HAS ANYONE EVER WONDERED.
okay well let's look at the github. at least an mcp server is just like a stupider API. right.
STARTING OFF. BAD.
This is. a PHI nightmare.
do you think these tech guys ever think. "i wonder why nobody has done this."
Well if they had to pick an AI at least they're not using one of the sketchy ones right. thank goodn
oh
You know, I'm glad Epic put so much time into making mychart extremely secure, even with all the health systems who configure them like a drunk monkey. it would be a shame if
hmm hey what do we think 'read local passwords' does
feed healthcare data to openclaw openclaw safe for 2FA codes and passwords in plaintext nothing bad will happen to your passwords and 2FA ccodes if you feed them to openclaww
ooohghhg my fucking ggogod
FROM DISCORD??? FROM MM DISCORD? YOU WANT TO FEED YOUR OWN PERSONAL HONEST TO FUCK PHI INTO, POTENTIALLY, DISCORD??
What many users may not know about MyChart providedby EpicSystems is that MyChart providedby EpicSystems is actually kind of like a local instance that your healthcare org runs, not a "Sign in once and see everything" type of deal (unless you have Care Everywhere, and then it maybe can be. But it Depends.)
Why is that you might ask. Well you see. There are many Rules and Laws and Regulations about the use and exchange of personal healthcare data.
Which is why of course this guy, seeing a well-thought-out and tested technical position, decided "what if i get all of them at once and also the 2FA codes and stored them ALL in the same place with no encryption whatsoever"
MRN??????????? YOUR PERSONAL HIGHLY PROTECTED BASICALLY ILLEGAL TO SHARE MEDICAL RECORDS NUMBER?
????????????????????????
This is genuinely the most terrifying import i have ever seen
I LIED; WHAT
GIVE OPENCLAW ACCESS TO YOUR ENTIRE FUCKING EMAIL AND MEDICAL RECORDS NOTHING BAD WILL HAPPEN IF YOU FEED YOUR ENTIRE BROWSER CACHE NAD PASSWORD KEY STORE INTO OPE NCLAW
okay. i'm done. i can't. i cannot continue to look at this. this is out of this world.
how do we think this project ends

Trying to keep myself from going "oh my god you people don' t know anything" by reminding myself that there are surely things that you don't just know, but consider such common knowledge that it wouldn't occur to you at all to consider that I wouldn't know that. I'd ask y'all to share some, but how the fuck would you know what is and isn't common knowledge to anyone else.
once in a theatre class i was reading a midsummer nights dream with another student and towards the end of the play thereâs like a eunuch? she asked what that was and i had a moment of complete bafflement that someone would have never encountered the term before. then i remembered that the sheer amount of fantasy books id consumed in my life was probably what gave me that knowledge
I've had a couple of therapists and the one I liked best was a trainee about to graduate the master's program because she was very close to me in age, however at one point I had to tell her what a schoolmarm was and I felt 107 years old

Have you ever seen a tufted pygmy squirrel (Exilisciurus whiteheadi)? Found only in Borneoâs mountain forestsâat elevations of more than 3,280.8 ft (1,000 m)âthis tiny critter is one of the worldâs smallest squirrels. It grows up to 3.4 in (8.6 cm) long. And at about 0.8 oz (22.7 g), adults typically weigh less than half a stick of butter! Easily recognizable thanks to its ear tufts, this species feeds primarily on moss and lichens.

Initially, scientists chose their dogs relatively arbitrarily. By the 1930s, however, most became convinced that someone, somewhere, needed to select a standard breed. It had been done with rats; why not with dogs? Crossbreeding experiments by embryologist Charles Rupert Stockard at first appeared promising, but their premature conclusion left the issue unresolved. Then, starting around 1939, work at Columbia University suggested the Irish terrier as a possible choice for centralized production instead. Yet terrier boosters faltered, interrupted by the arrival of World War II, and no institution could commit to hosting the much-yearned-for stock center for dogs. Instead, smaller projects such as the dog studies at Jackson Labs and at Cornell emerged, quietly redirecting scientific attention, by 1950, to the beagleâat precisely the moment the breed was in wider cultural ascent. While scientists agreed on certain traits for the ideal research dog, the chapter shows how quotidian familiarity, whether from hunting or pet ownership, was equally important.
Lab Dog: What Global Science Owes American Beagles, Brad Bolman. 2025.
....the notion of Irish Terriers as the breed du jour for animal research conducted on dogs is really sending me. I had no idea about this little corner of dog history and my mind is blown this morning, not going to lie.
I'm really enjoying this book so far as a lover of history, as a research scientist who works with animals, and as a person interested in the ways that humans and dogs interact. Despite the largely different subject matter, it's really scratching a similar itch to Red Rangers and Gray Ghosts so far for me.
oh he got into Irish Terriers because a show dog had cystinuria and he was interested in the genetic basis, and then just kept going on with the dogs he had. Oh, that makes so much more sense than thinking someone had deliberately decided that Irish Terriers were the ideal dog for standardized research studies.
Thinking about a girl I grew up with who spun her dog's fur into yarn, then knitted gloves out of the yarn and how all the other kids made fun of her mercilessly for it.
And how she's now used those gloves for over thirty winters and each time she puts them on, she gets to pet her beloved dog's fur even though Ginger is long gone. And how even though her bones have long since been swallowed by the earth, Ginger is still protecting her owner from the cold.
Just an ancient pact, passed down from the earliest dogs that slept beside humans to keep us warm, continuing on for decades after one of their deaths.
"You need to relax"
Best I can do is dissociate
Iâm reading a book on biofeedback trainings right now and they talk about this. The words âtryâ or âneedâ add pressure to stuff. Sometimes switching from âI need to calm downâ or âIâm trying to slow my breathingâ to âIâm allowing myself to calm down a little more with each exhaleâ or âIâm giving myself permission to slow my breathingâ can be more helpful. Thereâs a difference between âtry to relax the muscleâ and âallow the muscle to softenâ that is significant enough that for some people it can totally change the outcome of a relaxation exercise.
For other tips and tricks, instead of asking âwhyâ you canât change a thought/feeling (why being an offensive question, meaning it forces you to respond defensively - in this case defending the emotion you donât like) you can ask âis there any leeway or wiggle room with this feeling/thought/belief for something else?â Oftentimes we know multiple things at once, and by allowing for a small amount of ambiguity we can start to accept the situation more fully.
