They have since banned “overly voluminous” dresses on the Cannes carpet. Cannes used to be notorious for these kinds of dresses and it would cause huge logistics issues. Some examples are below I truly love some of these, but they were an issue to move along the carpet.
Voluminous outfits, in particular those with a large train, that hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theater are not permitted. The festival welcoming teams will be obligated to prohibit red carpet access to anyone not respecting these rules

As to how she sat, she probably went into the van head on and sat on a pile of tulle, with the rest pushed to her right, and then pulled the dress out first and backed out as you saw. That being said, it’s possible she didn’t sit at all. It’s pretty common for celebrities stand in vans on their way to events to avoid creasing their dresses (Cate Blanchett and Anne Hathaway below, Anne Hathaway is also wearing a garment bag to protect her dress)
