under US law, it's illegal for anyone who's not a member of a recognised native tribe to own an eagle feather. the penalty is a $100,000 fine.
14 years ago when I had recently moved to Alaska, I went hiking with an Aleut friend, and she pointed to a feather lying on the ground and said "hey that's a bald eagle tail feather, you should grab it!" and I was like "uhh I'm very white and that's very illegal" and she went "they're fuckin everywhere up here man. I have 20." so she grabs it off the ground and hands it to me and says "there, now it's a ceremonial gift from an indigenous person."
and I'm like, okay, cool, I guess this is how we do things in Alaska. nice.
so I keep this bald eagle tail feather around for years. display it in my home among other cherished memorabilia from places I've lived and visited, etc.
on a whim, I have just now looked it up. there is no exemption to that law for a ceremonial gift from an indigenous person. the last 7 years I lived in the US, I was technically a bald eagle poacher.
probably a good thing I don't intend to move back there anytime soon. I wonder what the statute of limitations is on bird crimes.
@freedomisscaryshit I'm fucking dying I think you forgot the word "feathers" in your tags?? or do you just wish you could grab whole ass eagles that land in your yard??
As an Indigenous person, it continues to astound me that there are such strict laws (written by White people) in our name, laws against...picking up things just found on the ground. Like, stop pretending this is "for" us. We don't want this.
so, for clarity, that's not what this is. the law against possessing feathers is an anti-poaching measure, derived from a North American treaty protecting certain migratory bird species from hunting. that treaty has an exemption for indigenous people to allow tribes that use eagle feathers in ceremonial or religious practices to continue doing so.
i used to collect feathers (illegally) as a teenager and the thing is that it's incredibly important for feathers from wild birds to be illegal to possess because it ensures that they never become fashionable to wear. the reason we passed the migratory bird act was because the american and european fashion industry was driving species to extinction in a timespan of years. not just decades. the ecological devastation of exporting birds for hats was absolutely insane and people were watching wetlands and forests and meadows just empty out in realtime. look at the wikipedia article for the plume trade.
the law against 'picking feathers up off the ground' means that you can't go shoot an eagle then sell the feathers on etsy by saying you 'just found them'. you can't own them no matter where they came from, which makes sure that they're not going to come from any birds killed and then secretly disposed of.
these laws, as harsh and ridiculous as they seem, saved flamingos, spoonbills, egrets, and all kinds of hawks and eagles from extinction. the minute these laws weaken and people can make money off killing them again, they're fucked.
this is one of those "no actually this regulation exists for a reason" laws much like work place safety and building fire codes (that Republicans keep trying to roll back) and is written in blood just like them as well. it's just not human blood this time, and the fact that people actually cared enough about long term future over short term profit to get it put in place is nothing short of astonishing. That it didn't get put in place in time to save several species is heart breaking.
I think ao3 is literally the only site where no censorship means no censorship. you can post the most vile things on there ā things that will get taken down on any other platforms ā and ao3 will protect you, your works, and your rights to create whatever you want, however you want.
and no, this isnāt me saying āwrite that messed up, disgusting thingā because while, yes, write it if itās what you want (I myself enjoy writing dark fics, something I believe would be considered āvileā to a lot of people), this is me saying in a world of censorship and capitalism, ao3 really is a treasure.
everybody say thank you ao3

āArt is happening everywhere all of the timeā but an awful lot of it seems to only ever happen in New York and London, doesnāt it?
So for members of bdsm Dungeons, it's a rule that you don't approach other members if you see them on public for privacy reasons. They might not want people knowing they're a freak.
That said, it's normal to make friends in that space who you hang out with, outside of kink stuff. When that happens and people asked where I met my friend, my go-to line was "Spin-class," which is a very funny joke if you know me even a little. Very not my scene.
Well, funnily enough, while I was working at a homeless shelter, we had a very similar rule because of the homeless stigma. If a guest from the Shelter sees you outside of work, you don't acknowledge or approach them. They can approach you, but you don't tell whoever you're with where you know them. The guest gets to decide if they want to share that info.
Smash cut to me being out with a friend I met at the dungeon a very long time ago. I bump into a guest from the shelter who approaches me to chat. My friend asks how I know the guest, and without thinking, I blurt out "spin class" before remembering that's my go to lie for how I ment dungeon friends. These two proceed to have a conversation, neither fully understood.
Friend: ooohhhh okay i get it. Spin class! Me too. Stopped taking that class a while ago tho.
Guest. Oh for real? That's sick man, good for you! You got a good set up now?
Friend: The best!! I've taken up wood working so my furniture is all custom. Got plenty of space to do "spin" at home. It's coming together.
Guest: Hell yeah brother!!!
Friend: was really good to have my own space during the rona, but man it's lonely! I kinda miss the group dynamics.
Guest: Yeah, i heard that from my homie when he got out of "Spin class!" But it's for the best.
Friend: it can be, but its not for everybody. Can be safer to Spin in a group.
Guest: i know that. Lost a few homie to "spinning" alone. At least at the "class" you got other eyes on you.
Friend: I'm sorry to hear that! You know some elements of "Spinning" are risky but you never think anyone would get hurt. So, my buddy here still a real hard ass for safety?
Guest: oh man you dont even know. They revamped our whole fire escape plan.
Friend: Oh shit! They did that back when i was in Spin class too!
Guest: still improving the system i guess.
Friend: they still keep a bunch of robes outside in a shed so people who get out can cover up?
Guest: Yes!!!
Friend: Did you know it's their fault we have a 30 second rule!
Guest: Damn really!?! Makes sense tho, if there's a fire you gotta get out fast!
Friend: Yeah, I Never gave it much thought before they brought it up, but yeah the last thing you want is a fire when you're all tired up!
Guest: Yeah, that's true. I didn't know they came up with the rule, tho. I do like having the space between the beds clear...
Friend: Yeah it's so annoying when people block the path with their shit.
Guest: Yeah there's not enough space between beds for people to be hording shit.
Friend: Yeah! I loved that they always got people to keep their area clear.
Guest: not gonna lie i hate being told to clean up but it is better that way.
Friend: Yeah... haha.
Guest: well it was nice chatting with you brother.
Friend: you too, man! See ya around!
Guest: see ya!

Harrow and Palamedes entirely one sided bitter rivalry is actually one of my favourite parts of this book. She goes the entire time stressing about not falling behind him or showing a hint of weakness that he can pounce on because heās her most concerning competition. Sheās terrified of slipping up around him because obviously heās judging her entire house as inferior and beneath him and she canāt even contend with him, sheās so far behind and he must be gloating so hard.
Then for a decent portion of the book every time someone dies she thinks he killed them.
Every time he talks to her sheās so paranoid about him trying to manipulate her into giving something away or otherwise screw her over, she never accepts that heād want to work together for anything other than sinister reasons.
Meanwhile Palamedes is casually telling anyone who will listen that he thinks sheās an incredibly cool genius who is objectively terrifying because sheās so amazing at everything she does but also heād trust her with her life because sheās honourable like that.
And heād really like to be her friend but itās no problem if she doesnāt want to call it that and would prefer to hiss at him from the corner like an angry cat. Theyāll get past this stage eventually and then he can be nerd friends with the cool and definitely traumatised autistic girl.
Tip:
When it comes to stuff like racism, sexism, homophobia, etc, Iāve found itās usually way better to think to yourselfĀ āI donāt want to beā thanĀ āIām notā.
I.e. if someone goesĀ āthat thing you just did is ableistā, instead of goingĀ āIām not ableist, I donāt hate disabled people!ā itās usually a lot better to goĀ āI donāt want to be ableist, I should rethink what Iām doing/saying/etc in light of that factā. Because that shifts your thinking so rather than jumping straight into denial and attempts to defend your character, youāre instead more inclined to look at how your actions could be misrepresenting your intentions. Or whether youāve overlooked something, been callous, or acted in ignorance.
