Me rn, with a pile of prepped and soaked fiber, waiting for the thiox indigo vat I just mixed up to reduce
CRYING SCREAMING THROWING UP FUCK DAMMIT ITS WORTH THE FUSS
This is one fifteen second dip for each item in a medium strength vat
Proudest of these five. I wanted
1. The color of storm clouds on the horizon
2. The variegated green of a forest
3. The pale blue of a sky
And tho the pale blue is a bit uneven I got it!!!!!!
And the cotton t shirt came out beautiful too
The pink two are a tank top and a t shirt I threw in a solar dye jar of avocado pits, set outside, and forgot about for a week
The GREEEN!!!
15 seconds and not even close to exhausted.
I wonder (if one cared to) how you can manage a more even dye distribution?
Wow! that's a LOT of handspun!
THE GREEEEEEEEN
I stopped because I was losing the light. Am gonna haul the bucket back out and redip a few tomorrow to get deeper shades.
Some of this is commercial fingering weight alpaca and some commercial spun silk but yeah the five here are hand spun. I generate yarn when bored.

“You do realize that you’ve grown into a person that would have protected you as a child, right? And that in itself is the most powerful thing that I think anyone could do. You would have protected you. You are the hero that little you was looking for. And you need to realize that you’re doing a good job. And you need to realize that little you wants to be next to you.”

I've never loved anyone as much as I love Ursula Le Guin
Last year, I befriended a Catholic seminarian. We've gotten to be pretty decent friends. Seeing as he was staying in town for the summer and I wasn't, I entrusted him with caring for my plant.
He did a wonderful job, but as he was returning my plant to my custody, he explained "I watered her every other day, I gave her new dirt, moved her into the sunshine, prayed the rosary-"
"What?"
He looked at me, confused. "Isn't she a plant you pray with?"
"No," I said slowly. "She's a prayer plant. That's the... colloquial name of the plant."
Upon seeing his stricken face, I realized something went wrong. Turns out, this entire time, he's been including my plant in on his prayers and leaving her near icons.
Listen, totally cool. My plant becoming Catholic is a great deal for her not dying over the summer. But now I must navigate this interfaith household. Keep me in your thoughts.
"I can't believe humans would hunt the thylacine to extinction, humans are fundamentally evil" Hey, did you know that extinction was long thought to be impossible, and within 50 years of humans realizing that extinction via overhunting was a possibility it practically stopped happening? Did you know that humans are so desperate to prevent more losses that they're funneling millions of collective hours and billions of euros into helping other species? Hours and euros that could be spent on humans, and species on whom humanity's own survival does not depend? Did you know that due to an accidental introduction of rats, the Lord Howe Island stick insect population was brought down to 24 individuals and now there are tens of thousands of them?
This bug. This bug that, to most humans, is utterly useless, relatively gross, and completely foreign. Humans saved it because humans do not want to cause another extinction ever again if they can avoid it.
@crabussy
as someone in the field of ecological conservation, I can promise without a shadow of a doubt that people DO care. SO MANY people care.
I have to race to sign up to volunteer trips because even with dozens of spots available, people rush to devote their unpaid free time to helping the environment. these trips often fill up within hours. people care.
you will see a lot of bad news because that is the kind of news that people pay the most attention to. I know this more than you'd think from my optimism- not only do I live somewhere facing some of the most extreme ecological issues on the planet, I also spend my time studying the Bad Stuff every single day.
to see all of this firsthand and stay hopeful is proof enough that there IS hope. I promise there is good news, brilliant news, all the time. it's just less visible. but it's no less important or impactful.
hikes are very good yes but a deluxe hike is when you are a accompanied by a freak with niche nature knowledge. they’re like omg stop there’s a horned valerian varmint beetle here and then you both get to crouch down and look at a bug like :)

they told me not to get lost in the weeds, but these are lush, beautiful, and ecologically necessary native plants so it's probably fine
