Final outcomes

For the poem Wild nights - Emily Dickinson. I used the poetry analysis: - Absent lover - stormy sea -  desire to be intimate with another person as the base idea for the theme of the illustration. The principle I used to create my illustration is Line, texture, shape, pattern 04: - Line For the poem The Trick – Imthiaz Dharker. I used the poetry analysis: - Love   - dreaming - missing a partner - distance as the base idea for the theme of the illustration. Visual thinking 01 My illustration was inspired by the quote “carrying oranges that cast a glow” from the poem The Trick - Imtiz Dharker. I used a conceptual approach to visual thinking by creating the figure shaped out of oranges. I added a heart to the head of the figure to tie into the theme of love.

I explored my brief using the principles and practice techniques I was taught. Colour 03 I chose split complementary because I thought the complementary colours go well with the theme of romance. Although I was worried that compilatory colours would look too bold so adding analogous colours (split complementary) would soften the overall look. Although when I finished my final outcome, I didn’t use all the colours. Composition 02 I based my illustration on the poem Wild nights- Emily Dickinson. The quote from the poem that inspired my work was ‘rowing in eden- ah, the sea!’. I used the golden ratio to draw a rose, illustrating a flower of Eden. I put the flower on a background of water-like texture to add the sea.

We were given 3 choices of briefs for the tutor-led brief project. ⁃ Love poems ⁃ Causes in Common ⁃ Virtual Concerts - Gig Posters I chose love poems. The brief is to Create 2 interior book illustrations for a selection of love poems. We had three to select from three poems and I chose: The Trick and Wild nights. This brief is from a competition that folio society and house of illustration run to select illustrations for their high-end books. To start the research, I decided to analyze the poems so I can fully understand the meaning behind the poetry. The Trick –analysis - Love - conflict - dreaming - missing a partner - distance Wild nights -analysis - Absent lover - stormy sea - sailor - searching -  desire to be intimate with another person I also researched other book illustrators and target audience.

Final outcome

For the final illustration, I used the subject of magic and expanded on my illustrations from principles of practice: narrative and sequence 06. I experimented with the layout and comic panels then added a halftone effect to the illustration.

Line, texture, shape, pattern 04 I used the main themes of the song I had discovered in the cut-ups to base my illustrations on. I went further into the theme of magic while exploring patterns. Image and text 05 I used the technique of expression- onomatopoeia shape and form to explore image and text, in a magic-themed illustration. I also use informative techniques to make an informative illustration of the song while incorporating text and image. Narrative and sequence 06 I used the theme of magic to create this narrative of a witch casting a spell. This project was also around the time of Halloween.

I explored my brief using the principles and practice techniques I was taught. Visual thinking 01 I explored the main themes and subject of the song using another technique I had learnt during the visual thinking lecture. Which was cut-ups, so I cut up the lyrics and found similar words/ themes being repeated. I found the main themes and subjects of my songs were: - Darkness - Searching - magic. Composition 02 I used the image of the artist Joan as police woman and the golden ratio to illustrate the artist while further exploring composition. Colour 03 I created a colour pallet for this brief.

I researched the artist's background and into the genre of pop. I also looked at other 7-inch record sleeves and their colour pallets.

The workshops taught me different printing, bookbinding, and folding techniques.

- boy - dog - street - minimal. In the image I was given of the boy, he was screaming, so I decided to do my narrative about a boy walking his dog down a street finding diamonds and screaming. I also had minimal as a prompt so kept the colour pallet monotone and minimal. I learnt about the difference between a single sequential narrative and a sequential image narrative. Single Sequential is • Single narrative images often need no other information to tell the story. • All the information you need should be available to the viewer. • As always this will be open to interpretation and the viewers experience. Sequential image • Sequential images use multiple images to show transition or movement through a story or situation. • These can be highly structured technical illustrations or looser and more informal imagery. • The text often becomes an integral part of the image. • You could also consider an animation a form of a sequential image.

During this lecture, we had a task where we were given an idiom and a colour pallet and we were to explore using image and text together. An idiom is: - a phrase or expression that typically presents a figurative, non-literal meaning attached to the phrase Ways to use image and text together • Harmony Balance — Symmetry • Expression — Onomatopoeia shape + Form • Expression — Onomatopoeia Flow + Texture • Juxtaposition — Asymmetry • Juxtaposition — Abstraction • Informative — Standard Type Formal Layout • text can be used to create an image.

This lecture was about line, texture, shape, and pattern. I learnt that line, texture, shape, and pattern are: - how images are constructed and create meaning. - The fundamental building blocks of image-making. - There can be no illustrations without these basic elements. I enjoyed exploring patterns during this lecture.

In the contextual studies lecture about colour. I learnt about the function of colours: - To evoke a certain mood or emotion - To draw your eye to an image - Or even to communicate something important without using words at all. I also learnt more about the colour vocabulary: - Hue - Saturation - Value - Monochromatic - Analogous - Complimentary - Split complementary - Triadic - Tetradic I did my own research on this subject through online videos, looking further into mixing colours digitally and making/ shading skin tones. Part of my research I found interesting was looking at warm and cool colours and how cool colours make an object look further away and warm colours make the object appear closer.

The composition is the way illustrations are arranged. How the parts of the image hold together as a whole. approaches to composition are: - Golden ratio - Rule of thirds - Framing the image - Negative/white space
