The prints of Sình village’s last craftsman
On the 5th day of the Lunar New Year, we went to Sình village, located 9km northeast of the city of Huế. It’s known among locals for its colourful woodblock prints and a traditional wrestling competition held on the 10th day of the New Year. Out of the entire guild that once existed, today only Mr. Kỳ Hữu Phước remains. He startled when we arrived. Usually people come early in the morning, not in the midday heat (like us…). The man was busy working, so an elderly woman came to us, and showed us a bit of the printing process. After careful choosing of which traditional prints to buy, we enjoyed a cup of tea. According to an art history book I came across later, the prints from this village differ from the famous ones in Hanoi by portraying more “folk” themes -less influenced by Chinese aesthetics- like depictions of animals and plants, religious life, folk games, and customs of Central Vietnam. Huế, 2026
I couldn’t believe I’d been to Huế twice this year. It was once a place so dear to me, but now it feels no different from anywhere else. Perhaps it’s because Huế holds too many memories I’d rather not revisit.
The food I used to love, the paths I once wandered, even the river that once felt so familiar, all of it now seems distant and strangely bland. Maybe it’s age. Maybe it’s awareness. Or maybe I’ve simply outgrown it.
Lately, I’ve found myself appreciating my hometown more than ever.
This trip to Huế ended with one of the worst cases of food poisoning I’ve ever had. Walking into the emergency department alone in the middle of the night made me realize how much I longed for familiarity, for the comfort of being close to home.
At this point, nothing can replace my hometown. Not Huế. Not Saigon. Not Melbourne. Not Guildford.
Maybe it’s finally time for me to let Huế go.
