The soil testing equipment on Curiosity makes a buzzing noise and the pitch of the noise changes depending on what part of an experiment Curiosity is performing, this is the way Curiosity sings to itself.

So some of the finest minds currently alive decided to take incredibly expensive important scientific equipment and mess with it until they worked out how to move in just the right way to sing Happy Birthday, then someone made a cake on Curiosity’s birthday and took it into Mission control so that a room full of brilliant scientists and engineers could throw a birthday party for a non-autonomous robot 225 million kilometres away and listen to it sing the first ever song sung on Mars*, which was Happy Birthday.

This isn’t a sad story, this a happy story about the ridiculousness of humans and the way we love things. We built a little robot and called it Curiosity and flung it into the star to go and explore places we can’t get to because it’s name is in our nature and then just because we could, we taught it how to sing.

That’s not sad, that’s awesome.

Curiosity celebrates her 14th Martian birthday this week and she’s still trucking along in Gale Crater where she’s sampling Martian soil to learn about the geology and climate and teach us all about the ancient lakes that used to cover our nearest neighbor!

Thank you to everyone who keeps this post queued up so I never forget her special day. I love how much love this post gets every year.

Gideon's existence in itself is an abomination to the Ninth. nothing she can do will make her palatable to Pelleamena and Priamhawk; nothing she can do can make her relationship (or lack thereof) with them worse. she can't leave, but she doesn't belong either. she bitterly wants what Harrow has: recognition, belonging, acknowledgement, praise; parents. she wants to be Harrow and she wants Harrow to see her; and in the entire Drearburh, Harrow is the only one who does. even in her fantasies of escape, Gideon wants Harrow to see her, to need her, to be proud of her. she will never ever let Harrow go.

Harrow's existence is a welcome, sacred abomination to the Ninth. Harrow is made, with great sacrilege, for a single reason, and Harrow is aware of this reason from her very early childhood. Her every step, every breath needs to be worth the souls of two hundred children buried in her. Her parents' love is entirely conditioned; her parents' love is (quite literally) tying a noose around her neck. Harrow has to only see Gideon to know what's waiting if she missteps. Harrow fears and wants what Gideon has, bitterly: the freedom to be beyond disappointment, the lack of debts to pay. in the entire Drearburh, Gideon is the only one who doesn't care and doesn't know about her purpose, who doesn't care for the entire planet Harrow is tasked with saving. Harrow will never ever let her go.

they love each other like they're crabs in the bucket; and by the time we meet them, neither of them know how to ask who's holding the bucket, and who's put them there. they only know how to not let go.
