Im honestly starting to think people hate realistic, complex characters. Right now I'm thinking of Agott from Witch Hat Atelier, but there are many other examples too, I just want to talk about her rn. So I started reading WHA in the summer of 2024, but I fell off around volume 5 and I only caught up after the anime started. Having said that, I think initially meeting the character and forming my opinion of her without the input of others allowed me to truly make my own decision about her. Honestly, she has become one of my favorite characters ever. But just looking at what we know from the anime rn (through ep 5) I just see a hurt prideful little girl who feels threatened. Does it make what she has done right? No, but that doesn't make her a monster. This series has so many incredible elements that make it so good, but the characters are my favorite. Shirahama sensei wrote these beautifully complex, realistic characters, that sometimes that realism can make people hate them. Agott is 12. She has works so hard to get where she is now and to see this girl who has done none of the work you have be given the same opportunity as you? That's got to hurt. Once again, I am not justifying what she did, but I also want to point out that she stated that she expected Coco to give up. She didn't expect her to actually attempt the test. While I won't get into any specifics since that would get into spoiler territory, I will say that she has issues. She's been through things relating to her worth as a witch, and so I can understand how she would feel threatened by Coco.
The way many of the people are talking about Agott makes me wonder if they are seeing her as someone from their life, someone to punish. The only thing I can say to those people is this: let people grow. She is 12, she is learning, and she will change.
Honestly, with the response everyone has had to Agott, I'm scared for how people will see Olruggio, because let's be honest, his first appearance paints him in not the best light.
