something i think is really interesting about the adaptation from book to film of conclave is the change in the way benitez is expressed as intersex. in the movie he is outwardly male while also having a uterus and ovaries while in the book he fully has a vagnial opening as well as a penis saying his surgery in geneva was to quote “correct a fusion of the labia majora and minora, and a clitoroplasty” (harris 373). its an interesting change that fits with the movie version of benitez who has a lot less presence in comparison to the book version who is a lot more active in the story and seems to have a lot more outwardly feminine traits, being called “boyish” and appearing younger than he is, emphasis on how much hair he has even later in life as well as the fact that he doesn’t need to shave.
