Obviously there are things we know about him from the rest of the song and from what he has talked about in the past, like his social anxiety, depression, and OCD, but he censored that line for a reason: interpretation. Sure, it could have been The Question, which is why I tagged this post the way I did. I am aware of the theories and the way many people interpret this song, and it’s never my intention to trigger anyone, accidentally or otherwise, so I wanted to cover my bases. But it honestly could just as easily have been any other question on the depression or anxiety screening questionnaires. We don’t know, and unless and until he explicitly tells us what he means here, I don’t think it’s fair to assume. Speaking from experience, people tend to assume a lot about you when you tell them you have a mental illness, and it’s hurtful and insulting about 80% of the time, so I will not perpetuate that here or anywhere else.
